Re:Ask HN: What printer do you recommend for rare printing? on Friday November 15, 2019 @10:32AM (#21545617)
HP Envy 5055 w/ HP Instant Ink

Just works. We print a couple of times a month and the Instant Ink is fee < 10 pages per month.

Playing devils advocate:

- If the hack/virus was already installed, a network shutoff won't help much.

- If a car is 10 years old with 10 years of safety updates/patches, resetting to the original firmware might not be a viable solution. But there needs to be a failsafe way of knowing the running software has not been tampered with.

Re:Amazon search was down on Thursday June 02, 2016 @09:22AM (#11822223)
It's used to search their site for products. If you want to buy a "571B Banana Slicer" the easiest way to find it on amazon's site is to use their search.

The search feature being broken translates to sales being close to zero for that time period.

CerteDrive | Fullstack Rails Engineer | Grand Rapids, MI

Mike here, CTO of Certedrive. We just started looking to add 2-3 developers to help us expand our product offering. We are a startup with customers in 37 states and looking to expand that number to 48 in the next 6 months.

I moved to Grand Rapids from SF two years ago and I have been very happy here. If you live near Grand Rapids or you are looking to move to an awesome place and you are a great rails developer, contact me: [email protected].

No remote at this time (although some do work from home a couple days a week when they want to).

Re:Brave: Brendan Eich's clean-ads browser startup on Wednesday January 20, 2016 @11:55AM (#10939427)
There are people with needs and people with solutions. I understand where you are coming from, but advertising a solution to people that may have that need is not always evil.

There are many times where I am glad I saw advertising: my favorite band is coming to town, a new product that will save me hours a day just got released, the shoes I have been looking for are being sold at 30% off.

I don't want to give up all of my privacy, but sometimes I don't mind finding a solution to something in my peripheral focus.

Set 1 (5,4,3) = 4 average

Set 2 (5,7) = 6 average

Average of average (4,6) = 5

Average of Set 1 + Set 2 (5,4,3,5,7) = 4.8

Re:Poll: Do you regret not going to college or university? on Wednesday May 14, 2014 @05:31PM (#7746569)
I don't think the question is biased on it's own.

It would be biased put in the context of "I'm deciding if I should skip college, is that the right decision?" and using those as your main data point to find your answer.

If you have implemented SOA in your startup, can you describe some of the advantages and problems you encountered? Would you do it again?Have you ever implemented an SOA that started with the services all served from the same codebase/instance but still communicating via HTTP?Is there another architecture pattern you would choose?

The discussion is about apps written natively vs apps written in HTML (not web pages viewed in safari). The only method available to develop an iOS app with HTML is to use UIWebView, which is crippled compared to Safari.

Re:Violet Blue: What happened with my Security BSides talk on Tuesday February 26, 2013 @11:02PM (#5290453)
It would be nice if all the parties involved would talk to each other directly to get a better understanding of the miscommunication. It would help for a better outcome of future situations like this.

Email apps should allow pin protection (separate from the phone pin). An email app is a door allowing access to the majority of services people want to keep secured.

Do you have plans for native ios and android views?

It seems like a DMCA takedown notice would work in this situation. Anyone have a reason why that would not be a valid method?
It's not limited to + either. Hyphen, equals, dot are also valid at different email providers.
Some may suggest to convert the email address into it's base form and store it in an extra field. So [email protected] would become [email protected]. Use the extra field to block any new signups that match an existing base address. But this has a high chance of blocking valid email addresses. Different email providers allow different aliases: plus, hyphen, dot, equals. That, combined without knowing which each email service a domain is using, makes this method very difficult to get right.
I like the interactive map at the top but it's annoying when the pop-up bubble moves the pin offscreen. I suggest increasing the size of the header/map (w/ sliding open animation) when a pin is clicked to allow the pin and pop-up bubble to show at the same time.
Re:Passwords For Your Facebook Account on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @04:42PM (#3921085)
They are storing it as you entered it in a hash, not storing them as all uppercase or all lowercase. If they stored it as all uppercase, then you could randomly change the case of any letter, which does not work.
Re:Passwords For Your Facebook Account on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @04:37PM (#3921056)
They are probably still storing hashed passwords. It would require hashing your login attempt 3 times: 1) exactly you typed it 2) forcing first character to be lower case 3) inverting the case of all letters.

I'm guessing you won't need to start xcode. The apps can be kept in the dock for direct access.
I feel like I am missing something with this case.

Does anyone have some insight as to why the USJD is charging him with copyright? Is it a crime to host links to copyrighted content? What is USJD using to claim jurisdiction?

Re:Forbes: If Facebook Can't Stop SOPA, We Can Do It For Them on Thursday January 12, 2012 @01:57PM (#3457499)
An alternative would be to make a regular post. I plan to post the following to FB, Google+, and Twitter:

"This is my only comment today because I do not want to be censored by the passage of SOPA. #sopablackout"
