News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I think they're a problem in universities too. I'm sure I've seen research that suggests students in lectures who take notes on paper get better grades that students who use laptops in lectures.

Ask HN: Burner Phone for China?

Hi Hackers, I'm planning a 2 week visit to China. My question is, is it ok to use my iPhone and do a factory reset when I come home or do I need a burner phone? I've Googled and read a few articles, but it is hard to get a real sense of the actual risks. Will I end up with CCP malware on my phone or are the risks exaggerated? Thanks in advance.

The UK gov has a database of all apprenticeship vacancies in England (think Wales & Scotland have something similar).

You can get the vacancies via an API. I built the site to get all the vacancies for Sheffield. Local branding matters because most young people live at home when they do an apprenticeship (unlike university).

Building the site was pretty easy once I'd understood SSG and incremental regeneration. I've kept the design as clean as possible.

Next job is a dynamic sitemap, then some improvements to the vacancy details page and maybe some kind of location based filter/search.

Got to keep it as simple as possible - I spend maybe a couple of hours a week on it.

Apprenticeships in the UK are in demand (young people looking for alternatives to university & debt), supply of good quality ones is limited though. Sheffield has about 60,000 uni students and only around 200 apprenticeship vacancies at any time.

Always thought the pizzas were a bit small.

Try learning Japanese at 55. It’s the same.

I was in an evening class with other students who were mostly in their 20s. The age thing was really obvious. All the older students struggled.

I kind of thought I could be super organised, come up with smart efficient ways to learn characters etc. But no, you need raw brain power - mostly memory I think. Wisdom doesn’t count for much.

I learnt more about the reality of growing old than I did about Japanese:-)

Reminds me of an article about the code that Neil Ferguson's Imperial College team used to model covid. Though I think the Imperial code sounded worse.

What a miserable list. The ordinary Brits I know - friends and coworkers - are kind, hardworking and tolerant. That includes the people I know who voted for Brexit. And the British seaside is great - go to Scarborough for a day in the summer and watch families (plenty of Asian families now) playing cricket on the beach. Britain's doing ok.

University of Sheffield is big, but £30m stills sounds like a lot to spend on a student management system. I believe the SITS system is written in uniface - "You're building all these views and processes and you get all of the problems that you would do with conventional software development, [however] you just don't have any of the standard tooling that makes your life easier while you're doing it".
