Re:Casio Watches of the 1980s on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:23PM (#50317540)
They worked then, they still work.

Exactly what a watch should do.

Casio nailed it!

Re:Linux 7.4 Sound Changes Merged: "The AI Flood Continues" on Sunday October 25, 2026 @10:11AM (#50231789)
How long until Linux supports multi-stream transport and fractional scaling as well as Windows does? Surely Codex and Claude can manage this.
Re:DaVinci Resolve 21.1 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:53AM (#49627627)
How would you make an application designed for creating Hollywood grade cinema easier? The fact Resolve isn't two orders of magnitude more complex is astounding to me!

Resolve is like a top of the line professional camera: there are so many more knobs, buttons, and dials on those because top-end pros run everything manually changing settings as they take photos based on changing light conditions and what the subject is doing. Resolve isn't going to assume what you want and do it: it's a professional tool for professional users. The fact they are still giving it away is amazing to me.

Re:Homeschooling Explodes 200% in NYC on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:44AM (#49627461)
I know a lot of NH readers homeschool their kids; any of them teaching computer science? I never pushed my kids toward any path. None of them were interested in what I did for work so the most I "forced" on them was an awareness of how internet scams and surveillance capitalism works so as they use computers and phones they can be properly skeptical and not be taken by scammers.

Hermes or some other agent?

Going on the title, I think it's to blame men.
Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @01:03PM (#49100089)
I've kept an eye on Darktable for a while. I do high volume photography for high school sports so while Lightroom Classic (LrC) is the final editing tool before exporting the images that go to the clients a more critical app for me is Photo Mechanic (PM) to cull down from 6,000 images to the 300 keepers from an event (a process that only takes about ten minutes on PM). The last time I tried to run Photo Mechanic on Linux (using Wine) I was able to get it to load but it crashed hard every time I tried to actually use it. If there's a capable competitor to Photo Mechanic for Linux I might take a serious look again at switching. Then again, the speed from the Apple Silicon CPU+RAM+GPU processors means that even if I could get comparable hardware for Linux it wouldn't be any less expensive than a new MacBook Pro M5 Max. Definitely keeping an eye on this space but it's not where I need it to be for my workflow.
On the other hand, isn't the FreeBSD user base shrinking and its former users going to Linux?
Very neat project! I am curious if it can support other AI CLI tools as well.
