Re:Google Voice Launches Mobile Apps on Wednesday July 15, 2009 @10:45AM (#705744)
Happy to see the iPhone app will be out soon too. Now if only I'd actually get my google voice invite I signed up for over a year ago...
Re:The first pics of the Chrome OS Beta for devs on Thursday July 09, 2009 @08:46AM (#695724)
Actually it does show the desktop, thats how sad it is.

The guy made some rainbow colored Chrome OS logo which isn't even correct, google never uses rainbow colors beyond the "Google". It looks like XFree + some crappy mac-like window manager.

I thought it was common knowledge that microsoft is announcing the RTM sign-off on Monday 7-13-2009. This has been known for a while.

WZor.net has more information but they should be choosing which candidate build is the RTM shortly, and then an officially announcement will come Monday.

From google's blog post I'm under the impression that while based on a linux kernel it will have very little actual code from linux. It sounds like they are writing their own version of X with a minimalistic window manager.

I very much like the look of the chrome browser so I'm looking forward to checking this out. Specially since I'm one of those that doesn't do much on his home machine besides web based stuff.

Do you mean the idea of creating their own OS? Or the timing of the announcement itself?

Obviously they've been working on this for at least some time now if they are releasing the code in a few months.

Re:Ask HN: Startup vs Girlfriend on Wednesday July 08, 2009 @08:18AM (#693745)
Taken a little bit too literally. I meant that he should share his dilemma with her. How she is a very important part of his life but so is the startup. However even if taken literally I doubt she would react the way you are saying. From what he's said she sounds like a tech literate person and may have even posted a question of her own somewhere on the tubes.
Will I be able to run Internet Explorer on Chrome OS?

Edit: People can't take a joke. lol

Re:Ask HN: Startup vs Girlfriend on Tuesday July 07, 2009 @01:32PM (#691928)
The first thing you should do is essentially read her what you've typed here. It sounds like your relationship would benefit a great deal from some openness. She isn't going to react to this badly.

And in my experience with women, a little bit of time goes a long way if you do it right. Surprise her with flowers. Take her on a picnic. These things don't take much time but give her something to brag about to her lady friends.

You'd be surprised how just a few hours a week can convert a downward spiral relationship into a flourishing one.

Re:Review My App: iPhone Applications? on Tuesday July 07, 2009 @01:28PM (#691916)
This sounds like Windows Home, Windows Professional, Windows Enterprise and Windows Ultimate... Lent sounds more like a 1 shoe fits all.
Re:Review My App: iPhone Applications? on Tuesday July 07, 2009 @09:23AM (#691399)
It would be unreasonable to say everyone falls neatly into that category. I like the idea. It might make some iPhone owners more likely to lend out their stuff. People that wouldn't normally.
Re:Ask HN: What news sites are your favorites and why? on Monday July 06, 2009 @03:38PM (#690303)
Checked out Newmogul. Love it. I really love the arc layout. Very little wasted space.
Re:Simplicity on Monday July 06, 2009 @03:05PM (#690244)
This made me laugh pretty loud in my cube. This is exactly like a lot of the applications at my company. Scope creep really runs rampantly during the development process here.

Ask HN: What news sites are your favorites and why?

Lifehacker and Ars Technica are my current favorites. Always looking for a few more good information sources to add to my chrome bookmark bar :)I'm sure there are a ton of great news sites out there that I've never seen, I really can't stand major news sites that use a huge amount of their screen real estate for advertisements and navigation bars. What are your favorites?

His first mistake was leaving Goldman to begin with. In my opinion Goldman is one of the more evil corporations out there. And there's no better place to avoid their bubble building and bursting than to work for them, depending on how you feel about that ethically.
Re:My Visual Resume on Monday July 06, 2009 @02:55PM (#690219)
I think this resume stands out perfectly for the type of job he's trying to land. Sure this resume falls flat for a company looking for specific skills but I think this is more geared towards a company and position where they aren't sure what they want until they see it.

I'd definitely spend the time to figure the whole thing out if I got a resume like this on my desk.

Re:Example of fantastic customer service - BatchBlue on Monday July 06, 2009 @02:52PM (#690214)
A good example of how to do it right. Replies like that will convert interest into customers.
Re:Ubuntu is a Microsoft product on Monday July 06, 2009 @09:21AM (#689590)
I was expecting an article by someone arguing this point. Sadly it is just a screenshot of a typo on the internet.
Re:Facebook doesn't want you to deactivate your account. on Monday July 06, 2009 @09:18AM (#689581)
This is the first link on google for "delete facebook account"

It works. They deactivate your account for 2 weeks and then permanently delete it. Worked for me.

Looks like Microsoft is going to have to come up with a new angle of attack.

Hiding $10,000 on an IE-only website doesn't seem to have cut it.

Re:Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus on Sunday July 05, 2009 @01:43PM (#688481)
People test antivirus software by throwing a certain number of virii at it and seeing what percentage of those are detected. This is their detection rate.

Just because Antivirus A detects 99% and Antivirus B detects 85% does not mean users of Antivirus A can expect more false positives. If anything, the better designed software should yield less.

Also: Yes, I have used endpoint protection. It's forced onto my work laptop at the office. It has a tendency to KILL my systems performance randomly, even when not performing a scheduled scan. 8mb of ram, while impressive for a symantec process, is simply an arbitrary number if any type of disk access gets slowed down by the service.

Re:Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus on Sunday July 05, 2009 @11:53AM (#688345)
Standard executive talk. He's oblivious to the fact that many of the free offerings have higher detection rates than his companies products while at the same time have a much smaller footprint than any product they will ever make.
Re:Foxstart.com | Your all-in-one Start Page on Friday July 03, 2009 @01:48PM (#686373)
Very impressive!
Could this have something to do with bots squatting on username URLs?
Always cool to hear what Stephen has to say but there isn't anything most of us don't already know in the article.
Re:Ant mega-colony takes over world on Thursday July 02, 2009 @11:21AM (#684524)
I was a little confused at that too. I didn't downmod you but your original post had some pretty mangled grammar. Looks better now though.
