What is a perceptual distortion or aberration? Is it an umbrella term? What's included? Migraine auras? Vertigo? Seizures? Acid trips?

I haven't been able to find a precise definition.

Re:Why you should move your startup to a small fishing town on Monday December 08, 2014 @02:58PM (#8718741)
Not having enough time to go there and not being in the right season to hike Toubkal were my biggest regrets! Always a next time.
Re:Why you should move your startup to a small fishing town on Monday December 08, 2014 @02:55PM (#8718723)
20 euros total so 10 euros per person per night. Sorry that was confusing in my original comment! Having been in Portugal and Budapest on that same trip I can say that Morocco is definitely cheaper. But Portugal was my favorite :) Great people, great waves, great coast!
Re:Why you should move your startup to a small fishing town on Monday December 08, 2014 @09:24AM (#8716514)
Just got back from 5 weeks in Morocco, 2 of which were in Taghazout. My girlfriend and I were living very, very simply -- shared bathroom, toilet didn't have a tank, no meals included, internet only in the restaurant downstairs -- but we were paying 10 euros a night, each. You can actually see the place in the pictures they've put up, it was very beautiful, right on the beach.

There was a surf hostel that we also stayed in but it was more expensive (15 euros a night) for bunk beds but it had internet, good bathrooms and showers, breakfast included.

Morocco's a bargainers paradise. If you haggle you can get the prices down. It's the offseason now. Out of all the places we visited (Taghazout, Sidi Ifni, Mirleft, Agadir, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Boulemane, Merzouga, Chefchaouen, Marrakesh), for a total of 2 people, we would average around 20 euros a night, sometimes paying 10 euros and sometimes 30. Of course, we weren't looking for all the bells and whistles, just a clean bed for the night. Sometimes we got just that, sometimes we got a luxury suite for 20 euros cause it's the offseason. The big cities were indeed surprisingly more expensive. But nothing about Morocco is sketchy -- the hasslers are annoying but I never once felt threatened (it was also always the 2 of us). The coast is beautiful and you should explore beyond Taghazout -- Essaouira and Sidi Ifni if you can.

Re:Has Travel Become Another Exercise in Narcissism? on Saturday November 29, 2014 @01:14PM (#8674497)
It sounds a bit like the author's forgotten what it's like not to travel at all. As an American, I wish my friends would venture outside our borders so that in the future when, inevitably, we will need to invade yet another country perhaps we will reconsider. I'll gladly take the risks of homogenization and narcissism to the risks of an insulated population that accepts the media's perspective of the world rather than their own firsthand (albeit limited) experience.

Have we all agreed that higher SAT scores, advanced degrees, less coke, and more money are all things that we want? Am I missing something? Other than coping with stress, I'm not sure I want any of the other qualities.

Taproot Foundation is looking for pro bono part time developers and designers in the Bay Area, New York, DC, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Taproot volunteers support local nonprofits. Web developers are responsible for the coding and implementation of website projects. Graphic designers are responsible for the visual design elements of a website project and assist in creating site maps and wireframes. Projects require 3-5 hours per week over the course of 6 months.

Taproot Foundation is a nonprofit organization that makes talent available to other nonprofits that are working to improve society. We engage technology, design, strategy, marketing and HR management professionals on pro bono projects, called Service Grants that benefit local nonprofits.

My name is Adam, feel free to ask me any questions, adam AT taprootfoundation DOT org. Apply at https://www.taprootfoundation.org/giveprobono/apply.php

How will they reclaim the space in two years time for users who, for whatever reason, don't explicitly choose the files they want to keep?

Ask HN: what's up with the assumptions about "you" in submission titles?

"Why Don't You Do Something Other Than Sit at Your Computer?""You're working too much""You're not working hard enough"Can we leave "you" out of titles? I don't want to be lectured every morning by HN, especially when (most of the time) it doesn't apply to me or anyone else reading. How about something more boring but much less infuriating:"Leading a balanced life when running a startup"

This is Hadoop MapReduce code written using the Crunch library, which is written on top of the Hadoop API with an intent to simplify it. On top of that, the gist author wrote this bit of code in Scala (thus, Scrunch), trying to emphasize how much easier it is to write functional code in Scala as opposed to Java.
Web based would be ideal.

Ask HN: Platform options for quick intra-office coding questions?

Quick questions such as "How can I search history in bash?" or "How do I copy to system clipboard in Vim?"What are the platform options for this very fast question and answer service? Not something like StackExchange. More along the lines of IRC. I've also considered Yammer, Socialcast and Campfire.

Re:Google logo blacked out on all search results (in US) on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @12:43AM (#3478169)
With Google changing their logo every couple of days, this statement carries much less impact than any other site's protest. I wish they changed something more than just the logo. I wouldn't be surprised if many users don't even notice.

I'm interested in rtm's pseudonym: John McArtyem, specifically the 'Artyem' part. This is actually a Russian name (I know because it's also my name). I wonder why rtm chose it. Maybe because attempting to pronounce 'rtm' can lead to 'Artyem'? Sounds like the rest of the pseudonym could have been influenced by John McCarthy.

Python and Java; backend stuff. But, more generally, what paid resources are there?

I must be missing something, where's the CSS discussion? Isn't that what takes up most of the time?
A major feature that Jekyll is missing is commenting. Relying on Disqus, a closed source platform, is not ideal because it slows down page load times, does not contribute to SEO, and it does not let you host and search for comments in your git repo.

Some people argue that adding a dynamic commenting system contradicts the static html goal of Jekyll. Going along those lines, critics say that a conversation is best carried out on 3rd party sites like HN. However, for technical blog posts specifically, a two-way conversation helps illuminate finer points in the original blog post.

Googling around for 'jekyll comments' or 'disqus open source alternative' reveals many people who would use such an idea. However, aside from some quick-and-dirty projects, I see no compelling open source alternative to disqus that will include features such as OpenId, spam prevention, comment threads, etc. Does anyone know of such a project?

Re:Stanford Computer Science '10-'11 Salary Survey Results on Friday October 21, 2011 @06:24PM (#3141985)
abi, sounds like all of these responses are for fresh grads (be it BS, MS, or Phd). It would be interesting to see the stats for offers after 1, 2, up to 10 years in industry. There was some element of 'hockey stick growth' for me from the year I graduated (unemployed for some months), to my first job (nothing to brag about, salary wise), to my second job (which is much better). I wonder if it will be the same for Stanford grads since they're already starting relatively high.

I can't help but think that maybe Jobs just didn't have a positive review of the book. I've never read it but the most helpful reviews on Amazon are not favorable.
