wealth needs to be kept somewhere. you can either keep it in cash where it inflates away. or in bonds that also inflates away but slower or stocks that is a hedge against inflation.

so the point is protecting your wealth against inflation and continuing the compounding over long stretches of time.

you can liquidate as required or even borrow against it like the very rich do.

Yes they still use it but it’s meta’s version of it similar to presto and everything else.

6M at 60k spend means you have won the game a few times over. Go live your life and stop living in fear. You won’t get another one.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right
Without knowing specifics like your current skillset, experience, location, income requirements it’s hard to provide advice.
I want to build hyper realistic vr experiences with characters that feel real and not scripted.

But there isn’t a finite amount of work. If we can do something with less then we should be able to do significantly more with more by applying the same optimizations.

It might be able to identify a unique user but not the user personally. I think there’s also a fairly broad margin of error in how accurate it can identify a unique user.
I have a non technical bachelor’s degree and work at faang as a senior engineer and have been offered to move into staff.

I think being curious, always learning, being likable and good at interviewing (leetcode and sys design) don’t need a college degree after a few years of technical experience.

Everyone assumes I have a cs masters because that’s common at faang.

If I could get a do over though I’d just get the cs degree. I think there’s some value there.

Curious what the windfall would be for early employees
I’ve been working 4 days a week informally for a decade. Everyone checks out on Fridays with the exception of the rare fire.

I suspect it’s the same for other information workers.

The post isn’t asking our opinions of TA but rather for those that use TA to provide feedback. There’s obviously a market and this provides a product for that market similar to creating an app for astrologers.
I already work 4 days a week. Friday essentially is such a slow day with no meetings that is virtually optional. Been this way in several companies in the US including at big tech companies that are not known for wlb. 25% cut sounds like a bad deal for me and good deal for employer as they’d get the same amount of work done as before.

Ask HN: Those of you little children. How do you spend your weekends?

I am trying to make the most of my weekends with my family. We have all our meals together with dinner typically at a restaurant. We try and fit a couple of nature walks every weekend. Rest of the time we just spend time at home not doing anything in particular. After the kids are in bed my wife and I might watch a show or a movie. Sometimes I stay up later by myself and read or watch...

I think there’s a subjective component where it does feel like a big deal no matter what savings you have. But objectively if you can cover expenses for a year then it really is ‘meh, no biggie’ .

The parent comment I’m replying to has a man with a high school aged kid. By that point I’d expect substantial savings.

>The average index fund fails to outperform the S&P

This is a straw man as most people understand investing in indexes as buying a an index that tracks the s&p.

>If you are picking S&P as your champion, then I am allowed to pick a hedge fund as my champion.

You are making a false equivalence. The s&p is a proxy for the us market and therefore is a benchmark. It captures the captures the bets placed by all market participants including citadel.

Citadel does something beyond buying and selling equities to generate that alpha. And it’s likely not just restricted to equities. Nonetheless they are an outlier. Which is the point I was making. Most people won’t do better than the us market in aggregate over a similar stretch of time.

If you’ve been working in the valley for 25 years then you should have substantial savings to not fear a payoff every 5 years.

What I don’t get is not having investments/cash to hold you over for a year or even 2. Whitecollar jobs pay well and I’d expect most people to have earned quite a bit in the dot com frenzy.

I have to point out that you are holding soldiers of a wealthy country to the same standards as a terrorist organization in one of the poorest parts of the world. It contradicts the claim that Israel is a bastion of civilization in the region. The behavior of the Israeli soldiers is despicable and your explanation seems to downplay and rationalize it.

I haven’t seen anyone get laid off due to ai but maybe we don’t hire as many contractors to deal with some work that is now much easier due to the intelligent automation. Perhaps leadership is factoring this into their headcount decisions now.
Re:Ask HN: How to Get into Quantitative Trading? on Friday January 26, 2024 @04:59PM (#39149167)
How many hedge funds are there? A few thousand? How many beat the s&p? Of those how much can be attributed statistically to skill rather than luck?
Phone is far more intrusive anything’s else is negligible by comparison.

At big tech companies we are embedding ai into all layers of our workflow. And it’s accelerating.
> Why is there no "AI Excel" that can take a 1GB CSV and answer questions that are one step more complex than Pivot Tables?

Not sure what file size limit is but chatgpt can do this.

You don’t really have to rise up the ranks to make 500k. That’s a competitive offer for a senior engineer or where a senior with a mediocre offer will end up with stack refreshers and stock appreciation in a couple of years withouts any promotion. It sounds wild but is true.

Also, many of the roles are just 40hr work weeks. Not that much more stress than a 150k a year job in my experience.

You are right that after a certain point more money doesn’t give you more utility in the present. However, it does buy you time in the future given the capital that you are bound to accumulate and compound.

Well they’re all employed and given they chased hype they probably are in a tech hub and therefore I’d expect them to be earning above median for their cohort and still working on interesting stuff. How many of these assumptions are wrong?
You are assuming it’s well paying.
Curious how this works out financially though. Following the crowd got people into faang with 500k incomes. Working on something obscure I haven’t seen payoff the same.
