At the cost of drawing a potentially controversial comparison. At this rate of progression I expect we will have as much success "engineering" AI as we would engineering our own kids.

Outputs in humans are typically a weighted sum of all the learnings throughout a lifetime of inputs, applied to a specific problem. And equally difficult to predict without seeing the resulting behavior to a similar problem in the past.

Perhaps we just need to be looking at what we're actually teaching AI instead.

The time will come where AI will be learning by and for itself. I just hope we'll been able to teach it some positive core values before that time comes.

Pretty sure that was Blackberry's downfall
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026) on Monday September 14, 2026 @12:19AM (#49691935)
Working on a better way to do email. Every solution I've seen so far is trying to solve the problem from the wrong end in my opinion. Filtering, privacy extensions, walled gardens, throwaway email addresses.

I nearly got phished earlier this year. 24+ years in software engineering, I know exactly how phishing and spam work and what to look out for, and it still almost worked on me. That's what made me question the entire email landscape rather than just my own attention. It seems every attempt to fix it so far requires either a complex process, joining a closed system, or accepting that mail can...

I've been working on a project with the intention of changing the email landscape a little (or a lot) that I'd love to share with you. I've been working on a hosted solution available but if you prefer to tinker and get set up something for yourself there's an open version of it for a single domain.

It's a new open protocol that I've been working on that puts identity front and center of email communication.

I don't want to be presumptuous and spam you with the links but happy to send them over if you'd like to see more.
