Re:Bitcoin is an energy arbitrage on Wednesday December 20, 2017 @12:33PM (#15971732)
That's not arbitrage, just basic investment. Arbitrage is buying X at place A and selling X at place B.

Energy arbitrage means buying energy where it's low, and selling where it's high. The latter is missing here.

Re:Bitcoin is an energy arbitrage on Wednesday December 20, 2017 @11:42AM (#15971141)
Investopedia: "Arbitrage is the simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset to profit from a difference in the price."

Deciding to mine bitcoin where energy is cheap is just bloody obvious.

> When I buy Bitcoin, as long as the energy used to mine the token is cheaper then energy I have access to, I’m getting a good deal.

So buying bitcoin from a base in Antarctica, where energy is scarce, is a better deal than buying it in Dubai? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

This article is enormously confused, even by bitcoin standards.
Is there any nation in which kids are less independent than in the U.S.?

I’m an atheist. I’ve worked with people who thought I’m going to hell. What am I going to do, get them all fired?

No. Just be polite and respectful to your colleagues. Not every stone needs to be turned.

Re:Is Bitcoin a Bubble? Economists Say ‘Yes’ on Thursday December 14, 2017 @11:42AM (#15923730)
What makes you think that those fantasy signal processing strategies were invented by (respectable) economists? Because they weren't.

Re:Why is git pull considered harmful? (2013) on Wednesday March 12, 2014 @10:35AM (#7385832)
I have a cronjob that does a "git fetch" every 5 minutes. That means I never pull. I merge-fastforward, and I rebase. Very satisfied with that workflow.
Re:Flexcoin is shutting down on Tuesday March 04, 2014 @09:24AM (#7340294)
Yeah - "on average". The last couple of years have been an exceptional situation, since the federal funds rate is almost 0%.

> Every single holder of USD lost around 1-2% a year to inflation, which is essentially a backdoor tax.

That's only true of cash, and money in checkings accounts. Money deposited in savings accounts yields interest, which (on average) more than compensates for inflation.

Re:Time travellers: please don’t kill Adolf Hitler on Friday February 21, 2014 @06:37AM (#7276466)
That is by no means a fact. Nobody expected war in 1914, and most of the Great Powers did not want war. Franz Ferdinand was a force for moderation in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

A lot of domino stones had to fall for WWI to happen. By the way, I can recommend "The War that Ended Peace", excellent book about the causes of WWI.

The EU is a $16.5T economy, most of it on the internet, vastly underserved by internet companies compared to the U.S. Even Facebook was English only until 2008. Big business opportunities are being missed there.

iTunes did that at one time because people complained about the shuffle algorithm for similar reasons.
The innovation subsidies (WBSO) require 1225 hours/year, I believe. Pretty hard to get (lots of red tape) but worth it though, very happy with them.
Oh, but we're laughing at them!
Re:How in-app purchases have destroyed the game industry on Saturday February 01, 2014 @12:45PM (#7162426)
What's the difference between in-app purchases, and what Quake did (the first episode free, pay for the other three)?

There is a big difference between in-app purchases for extra content (paid DLC, basically) and the model that Candy Crush is such a despicable example of, i.e. pay for access.

Although you could even argue that pay for access IAP is no different than the coin-operated arcade games from last century.

Re:How in-app purchases have destroyed the game industry on Saturday February 01, 2014 @12:37PM (#7162376)
I must have missed part I and II, namely "The game industry has been destroyed", and "It was in-app purchases that destroyed the game industry." Any links to those?

> BitCoin might be a harbor in the face of runaway inflation. Even the swings of BitCoin pale in comparison to periods of massive inflation in several countries.

It might be, but there's no inflation on the horizon anywhere. The Euro is edging ever closer to deflation.

If Singapore chooses bitcoin, what will happen to the SGD? If it will be phased out, who will buy the current owners of SGD bitcoins? If not, what are the advantages of adopting bitcoin?
Re:Singapore bucks the trend and welcomes Bitcoin on Friday January 10, 2014 @08:44AM (#7036492)
> It might be worth considering that bitcoin has already multiplied in value by 1000 times several times, from $0.001 to $1 to $1,000.

That doesn't make another 1000x multiplication more likely. Quite the contrary.

That would also be misleading since everyone's share of the debt is $54,537, not $200K.

Companies don't like having their costs in one currency, and their revenue in another. It's called currency risk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_exchange_risk) and companies generally try to avoid it or hedge against it.
Re:Absurdly High Valuations on Monday December 09, 2013 @12:00PM (#6875172)
Yeah, I had the same question. If there are 2 investors each investing 50M, and they're equally senior, they both get half of the sale value if it's < 100M. They get 50M + 8%/y if it's sold for 100M-3B. And they get 1/60 each if it's sold for >= 3B.

That sounds like a good deal even if you think SnapChat is only worth 200M...
