Make the design breathe, you know, white space!” ———> Me, having an aneurysm
Re:Hacking ADHD: Strategies for the modern developer on Wednesday November 15, 2023 @07:31PM (#38284403)
This will probably have zero traction, yet:

1.ADHD is often misdiagnosed in women

2. The drop in estrogen around perimenopause/menopause worsens symptoms. It leads to late-life diagnoses as women's coping strategies no longer work as well.

3. Perimenopause starts 10-20 years before menopause; women in their 30's can suffer from perimenopausal symptoms.

We are delaying as long as possible. Right now it is ‘let’s evaluate when you are 13’.

Many peers have a locked down apple watch.

TL; DR: the perception of “ghost work” can also appear when employees work in functions where failure doesn’t immediately break the company. The work may have value, but the contributions support longer tails, look not needed. ———- I used to ask direct reports “how does what you are doing map to company strategies?” And if they could not do so we’d talk about what they were working on, how ‘mapping’ might work, and then decide if the work was worth it/ how to learn more about the company so their tactical was also strategic.

This was significantly easier in roles the company publicly supported. For roles where our team failure would destabilize things in a longer timeline, it was extremely easy to not be able to directly map to success, or feel fungible within the company.

Re:Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought on Thursday December 01, 2022 @11:06AM (#33818150)
Some fertility problems go unnoticed for a decade. I suggest to my younger (25-29) female friends to have their egg reserve estimated, even if they at that point are not thinking about ever having children. This is because the original issue can be upstream of the couple: a parent who had early menopause, or low ovarian reserve, may pass similar characteristics down to their female progeny.

(Source: conversations with IVF team)

Having been up since 3 AM with a child, I can say the cost-benefit fluctuates wildly.

Would love OP to indicate if they do not know the benefits and want to know, or if they know the benefits and want others to know as well.

Some old reasons to have progeny: free labor, keeping property in the family, nepotism, enforced helping parents in old age.

An idea apparently returning to popularity: "my genetics are a gift to the world and can save the world from itself"

Re:Crypto Firm FTX’s Ownership of a U.S. Bank Raises Questions on Thursday November 24, 2022 @12:35PM (#33733958)
I'll leave aside "the transaction was fraudulently approved" for the moment. I can see a possible, if naïve, thought process being "It's a tiny bank, hedge and crypto do absurd types of silly transactions, let's let them burn their cash since they think yolo with their own money."

There is research that supports your experience and conclusions. See Clifton Strengthsfinder, based on Gallup's research. The gist is: build on your superpowers instead of on the qualities you are less strong.

Depending on the failure you can get kits to fix it.

Maybe the problem starts with talking about grown women using "girls".

From my experience in Human Factors this is not a real graph. It is bs disguised as information.
Re:Bad UI is causing people to get scammed on Friday July 08, 2022 @08:15PM (#32029851)
I'd say it is less about small tests and more about the cases and questions one is trying to cover during the usability tests.
Re:Robotic surgery turns surgical trainees into spectators on Wednesday July 06, 2022 @01:18PM (#32003974)
Ergonomics may seem not a big deal in that list of improvements, however it can make or break surgery technique and a surgeon's career. Many professions that rely on manual dexterity lose practitioners due to long-term inappropriate ergonomics leading to physical damage/pain.
Do you plan to go the paramedic route? I let my EMT lapse once I moved to CA; the scope of work was more restricted than East Coast, where many states rely on volunteer fire and EMT.
It does make risk analysis more interesting. It surprises me how people will think only of the positive or accidental case, leaving adversarial ones off the table (and risk mitigation)
Lapsed EMT here--this is 100% true.

The result when you are 'irreplaceable' is that there is no other place to be in the org--you cannot move on to other roles as easily.
Re:Animal magic: why intelligence isn’t just for humans on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @08:24PM (#31747735)
Your friend confused intelligence with obedience + desire to please.
An example of how some dealers see the situation:

A friend went shopping for new/reasonable car, and the Toyota dealer told them “See you in a few years!”

Re:Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs? on Saturday June 04, 2022 @12:03PM (#31621964)
I do not work for Spotify. The following are a bunch of educated guesses based on how 'old standard concepts' drift towards 'new concepts'.

1. They test their UI with their target users (assumes they have a handle on who pays $$$ for the service besides ad revenue)

2. People who just want functionality are not a high percentage of users or use cases

3. A good number of users/use cases value visual feedback via simple, larger imagery over condensed information displays (condensed displays are also harder to design well)

4. There are halo and competitive effects, and all apps of a certain class end up looking alike and imitating each other's visual languages and decisions, with design gradually drifting towards a new set of rules that become 'standard'.

And then there are UI/UX constraints. The Venn diagram of "knows how to use SMS", "knows how to use 2FA" and "knows how to use yubikey etc" does not have a lot of overlap outside a tech audience.
