Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:08PM (#50341968)
I’m just a layman but this feels like a big discovery on par with attention is all you need. For an LLM to have such incredible intuition of weights feels very emergent and unanticipated?
This is my secret fear was scrolling to see any mention of this.

It’s really hard to believe that all the benefit of the sun can be achieved in a single pill.

Re:Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:24AM (#50241979)
Curious if you have a minute to try to put more words to what made him amazing? I've got my ideas but curious to hear yours before I bias you.

I believe Jensen Huang said Doom was the game that launched NVIDIA?

So NeXT -> Doom -> Nvidia -> AI

I'd say the bitter lesson is that OpenAI will just absorb all of the services of 1000 companies in one ChatGPT app.
Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @07:47AM (#50194044)
Short term the argument that 'piracy exists yet doesn't affect steam sales' holds true.

Long term when someone makes emulating Switch 2 on your Steam Deck a 1-click install I'm not so sure.

Same. I let the LLM work inside a framework that I made.

Of course I only arrived at the framework after trial and error with an LLM showed me the shape of the problem and the framework presented itself to me.

Re:Do Frameworks Matter Anymore? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:39AM (#50084857)
I think as we move forward the answer to the question ‘is it critical?’ will just move to support vibe coding everything.
ha well what happens philosophically when bots pass the turing test and no one can actually tell the difference in their behavior vs human?
Re:What even is an OS now? on Friday September 25, 2026 @07:31PM (#49851446)
Had this thought this morning after seeing DHH announcing that Basecamp isn't writing code by hand anymore and they're using AI to write Rust for Hey's backend.

To me they're failing to see the even bigger picture that maybe even Hey itself is outdated in the Ai era and not only is its Ruby framework antiquated... the whole Hey service is too.

Re:I don't want to read what you didn't write on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @06:16AM (#49798923)
Lately on my hobby projects I've been lazily committing work with the prompt 'add the relevant files to git and commit with a message that explains why' - only because I remember 15 years ago reading an HN comment from someone complaining that too many commit messages answer 'what' but not 'why' haha

So far I haven't had a reason to go back through commits to isolate any issues but if I do hoping the 'why' messages may come in handy for my LLM lol

Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:45AM (#49724551)
My biggest issue with halting AI progress right now is we are in a dangerous place where AI is only just good enough to be dangerous. So I see an argument to continue development until its competent to depend on.
Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:21PM (#49631124)
I’m curious to see how using Windows Remote Desktop iOS App will feel at this size if I can be productive or not.

My previous thought was to use XReal glasses with my existing iPhone but that’s not realistic in an office environment.

Re:What will our economic future look like? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:32AM (#49627292)
Prices will fall to their raw material costs?
Re:Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance on Monday August 24, 2026 @12:59PM (#49422680)
How many programs can dispense with 50% of their complexity by just offering an API for LLMs to execute?

By way of example I use Kdenlive 90% less and just use Codex to issue the ffmpeg CLI commands directly when I want to crop/format video on my PC.

Re:Teaching my kid to code with a modern MUD on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @09:15AM (#49345183)
The Yoink used in the end was a word/action I first came across in Ultima Online when players would yoink steal an item from another players backpack.

Curious if that’s coincidence or if players of UO brought that over most likely from MUDs.

Re:ChatGPT Desktop (Codex Desktop) for Linux on Thursday August 13, 2026 @08:37AM (#49285024)
I’ve got a long running chat in the Windows app that becomes completely unresponsive for minutes on end. Complete travesty.
Re:A domain can now say it is for sale, in DNS on Saturday August 08, 2026 @10:28AM (#49222135)
“This domain is somewhat worn.” -UO joke
Re:Let's all meet up in the Y2K on Thursday August 06, 2026 @05:31AM (#49194473)
These photos are incredible.

Would love to see a show with the seriousness and production quality of Mad Men but set in the 90s.

Re:The case for MUDs in modern times on Friday July 24, 2026 @09:11AM (#49035042)
I’m a huge fan of UO which MUDs inspired.

Curious if in the spirit of

"Show me your [code] and conceal your [data structures], and I shall continue to be mystified. Show me your [data structures], and I won’t usually need your [code]; it’ll be obvious."

If you would share your data structures for your MUD?

Re:Software rendering in 500 lines of bare C++ on Friday July 24, 2026 @06:32AM (#49033548)
How many hours a day over the couple months?
Re:In defense of not understanding your codebase on Thursday July 16, 2026 @07:13AM (#48932946)
Whats the discussion around architecting a codebase where you don't need to understand the whole thing to operate inside of it?

Which large/massive codebases are considered the best to work in and if we examine their architecture what provides for that?

Re:My Steam Machine Is a 50ft HDMI Cable on Friday June 26, 2026 @06:01AM (#48684651)
Now just make the cable a few miles long and call it Nvidia GeForce NOW?
Generally probably shouldn’t try to innovate in too many places at once
Re:MAI-Code-1-Flash on Tuesday June 02, 2026 @03:26PM (#48375001)
Shouldn’t the next model focus not be on code but system design?

Seems like the work from a good system design to code is practically solved.

Now it’s a matter of the design of the system. Or is that represented in these evals?

Probably.

Pandora’s box didn’t just have social media in it.

I appreciate what you're saying but is the problem with fast food that people have always been hungry?
Re:Steve Jobs Next Computer: His Forgotten Exile Years on Saturday May 16, 2026 @08:22AM (#48159557)
Smart phones are what made social media toxic.

The last sacred mile of our social lives has been invaded and corrupted no?

No one enjoys a concert or sunset without feeling the need to capture and share it.

Who is to blame for that?

Steve Jobs

Re:Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphone on Saturday May 16, 2026 @08:07AM (#48159450)
What would a mobile OS look like if the browser became the operating system and apps were sandboxed WASM instead of native APKs?
Re:Steve Jobs Next Computer: His Forgotten Exile Years on Friday May 15, 2026 @04:14PM (#48153268)
Did smart phones ruin society?
