Education hasn't been defunded. I don't know why so many people keep posting that misinformation when the opposite is true.

Inflation-adjusted funding per student rose from $14,969 to $20,322 over the past two decades.

K-12 funding rose $1,610 per student in real terms between 2020 and 2023 alone.

"Schools in the United States spend an average of $20,387 per pupil, which is the 3rd highest amount per pupil (after adjusting to local currency values) among the 40 other developed nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)."

Government is a better example. Hundreds of billions in fraud every year of our tax payer dollars and not a single politician or bureaucrat has been held accountable.

1. Tesla has $40B in cash and is profitable. To say it's worth $5B is beyond absurd.

2. The market determines what is a fair value, not rando haters on the internet. Even professional Wall Street consensus is that it's fair value at approximately $1.2T market cap.

He said a while ago that he was open to trying it in response to some shareholders who kept asking him to advertise.
This applies to discussion too.

For instance, how many Reddit comments are bots? With the extreme groupthink present there, it wouldn't be a huge shock if it already makes up over half of the comments in popular subs.

Twitter/X has a productive approach with Community Notes. Scam ads get noted.
"under-delivering"

Delivered millions of EVs that everyone said would never work, dragging the entire car industry out of its stupor.

Delivered a vast electric charging network and made it available to the competition.

Delivered the best satellite internet.

Delivered rockets that NASA uses.

Delivered the most payload to space, more than even China.

Gee, imagine under-delivering that badly.

Re:Baldur's Gate 3 Wins Game of the Year at the Game Awards on Friday December 08, 2023 @12:12PM (#38571377)
The best part is having no bullshit monetization...

That's a brutally damning statement, if you think about it. Now imagine if they made a AAA RPG with above average gameplay and a decent story. The story and characters in BG3 are something you'd find in a B movie at best, and they constantly interupt the game. Honestly almost any random book or movie has a better story and it's terrifying that so many gamers think it has anything like a good story or characters. Seriously just read a random book and compare.

I don't understand why anyone would call it anything close to a masterpiece or game of the year, aside from overcorrecting for other AAA games that knickle and dime. Which, fair enough, but there are endless games, especially indies, that have none of that plus compelling gameplay.

He's an engineeer that worked through this with other engineers from first principles.

You're spreading bullshit with 2 seconds of effort.

Re:W3C Leaves Twitter on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @02:50PM (#38548610)
You're right that it's too slow.

It would help if they sent a notification to everyone who liked or interacted with such a tweet, to give them the community notes update. And or resurface it in the timeline.

Re:W3C Leaves Twitter on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @02:31PM (#38548399)
Community notes is the replacement for s/moderation/censorship. It's far more truthful and accurate than any s/moderation/censorship committee. This has been repeatedly demonstrated.
Re:W3C Leaves Twitter on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @02:04PM (#38548128)
Why?

It's like opting out of the genepool. Twitter/X is still where everything happens and where you get closest to the source.

https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=twitter.com

Even the most vocal Spaceman haters come back whenever something big is happening. This was reaffirmed again recently with the entire OpenAI CEO saga.

Add to that community notes, the single best social media innovation.

Why does that article say Elon caved as though he's personally involved in every moderation decision. He wasn't even aware of it and apparently disagrees with that decision.

"First I’ve heard. It is not possible for me to fix every aspect of Twitter worldwide overnight, while still running Tesla and SpaceX, among other things."

Re:Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20% on Tuesday January 10, 2023 @10:39AM (#34326427)
In season three, the sweet and utterly useless Nelson "Big Head" Bighetti learns he's been promoted at the Google-inspired tech giant Hooli, but is unassigned to any project teams.

Confused, he joins a group of other unassigned employees squandering the days left in their contracts on the company roof.

There's a lot of this going on.

"Since the show has been on, I've actually had a number of people — including today at Google X — I've had people send me pictures of themselves on a roof, kicking back doing nothing, with the hashtag 'unassigned' or 'rest and vest,'" Brener told Business Insider. "It's something that really happens, and apparently, somewhat often."

That would work. It's hard to think of a better choice.
That's a salient point. Biased, uneven, nontransparent moderation was always happening with weak justification, it was just done by unaccountable people and propagandized as righteous.

Remember people getting banned for saying "learn to code", disallowing certain news links even in DMs, shadowbanning undesirables with no transparency.

> Why would Elon take a first-principles approach, instead of the selfish, short-sighted approach

Because it worked for Tesla and SpaceX, his biggest successes.

Re:Twitter Suspends PG's Account on Sunday December 18, 2022 @06:00PM (#34045107)
If PG isn't a case of malicious enforcement by moderation and doesn't reverse this policy, he's truly lost the plot.

Now let's see if he bans and fires George Hotz, who is working at Twitter.

"Agreed that’s this is an absolutely ridiculous policy. My bio link has been a link to my Instagram since I created this Twitter. Feel free to ban me." https://twitter.com/realGeorgeHotz/status/160459789929523609...

"Btw follow me on Instagram in case I get banned here, you know how to find me

If saying that is banned, this isn’t somewhere I want to be anymore. That’s so far from free speech." https://twitter.com/realGeorgeHotz/status/160459985556060569...

Re:Twitter Suspends PG's Account on Sunday December 18, 2022 @05:42PM (#34044745)
This is fucking sad. This is just as bad as the old Twitter that banned people for saying things like "learn to code".

Any hope for an improved Twitter is getting tossed out the window.

Re:Paul Graham is leaving Twitter on Sunday December 18, 2022 @03:35PM (#34042943)
PG still has an excellent batting average and is more insightful than not even on Twitter.
Re:Paul Graham is leaving Twitter on Sunday December 18, 2022 @03:28PM (#34042821)
Most of that applies to the old regime. They banned people for saying things like "learn to code", allowed endless hate speech against certain groups, fighting, blue anon conspiracies, misinformation, propaganda. They blocked valid links and even news stories. Some you couldn't even share in DMs.

The only difference is the bias being applied to the tools they created.

Partisans like one and hate the other.

For non-partisans, both the old and new regime are terrible in most of the same ways.
