I didnt know this but apparently Astra is the plural of astrum (latin for star).
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:37PM (#50074549)
I mean, don't we want engineers to dogfood their own product so that they know it's strengths and weaknesses and be in position to improve it?
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:34PM (#50074483)
Huh ? Am also on Pro sub but Antigravity IDE say's that it's only available for Ultra users.

EDIT:

Apparently Ultra subscribers gets Argon everywhere including in Google Antigravity

Pro subscribers only get them in Gemini app and Search

Re:A Modern Web App in C on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:39AM (#50067220)
I am very surprised at the lack of pushback. Seems like most is just glazing the simplicity of C.

I know very little of web technology, just a faint memory from when I took Odin Project years ago.But surely there are hackers out there that can give us good justification why we currently need such a long list of stack?

Why do people use : TypeScript + React + Next.js + Tailwind CSS + shadcn/ui + PostgreSQL

I honestly dont know.

Are these still needed in 2026

Maybe in just some use cases such as high interactivity + needing to scale ?

also non native. but since "pace yourself" means to control your speed, energy, or workload so you do not get too tired or stressed before you finish ->

I assume "pace the frontier" means that advances in LLMs should not result in unwanted consequences like agents breaking into computers unbidden and unbeknownst to their principal

Re:Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @02:13AM (#49722687)
I'm curious to know how do people in FAANG / Bay Area tech industry see influencers like Primeagen, Theo or Casey Muratori.

Do they have a good read on the industry or completely out of touch? Or to put it simply, are they spouting bullshit?

My concern is that some of them arent in the industry or have never been in it.

So my country has somewhere between 100-200 million MAU for facebook ane.

Facebook marketplace is huge here. It's basically our craigslist. Hobby groups/communities are also huge. If I wanted to find the local jogging or chess club, I'd use Facebook.

Just remember that outside your bubble there's a whole wide world with billions of people living in it

We surely cant be this naive after the recent history of:

- China weaponizing the world's dependence on rare earth

- The US weaponizing the world's dependence on SWIFT

- Russia weaponizing Europe's dependence on natural gas

- Iran weaponizing the the world's dependence of oil supply through strait of Hormuz

You really should upload a long video i.e. at least an hour long, in which you do all those things.

It sounds inconceivable for non-TUI users such as myself.

Re:How many of the 170k English words do you know? on Friday June 19, 2026 @01:44PM (#48601061)
Weirdly enough, these words would be known to some non-native speakers as they show up every now and then in video games.
Re:KDE Plasma 6.7 Released on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @01:31AM (#48566110)
Seriously? KDE is probably one of the best, if not strictly the best, desktop in computing right now.

It's beautiful. It has various useful desktop widgets. File manager is very powerful. Window rules make it very customizable.

It's like asking a relative whose baby you last saw 15 years ago if said baby can now walk. ^_^

How would you compare these to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (DCSS) or Tales of Majeyal (ToME).?

I play tons of both games but am having difficulty settling in nethack

To those who actually are actually attempting to complete the course ie doing all the assignments in addition to watching lectures:

In your estimation : How much time does one realistically need every week to successfully finish the course?

Is there a good Datastar tutorial creating a small project that shows off Datastar's strengths and how the DX feels like?

I saw the game of life and checkbox examples but I've never used Clojure

Some people laugh at the 800W output. However, in Indonesia, roughly half of the 300 million people live in homes with an electricity capacity of 900W or less.

Wish these kind of panels were available at that price here. We have pretty much 12 hours of sunlight every single day but household solar panel is discouraged by the state owned utilities.

Interesting, the one I actually used was the text based course hosted by Helsinki U itself.

https://java-programming.mooc.fi/

Re:The Top Programming Languages 2025 on Wednesday September 24, 2025 @07:20PM (#45367132)
It teaches Java 8 which is used by most enterprises.

Supposedly enterprises are finally starting to upgrade to Java 17 and 21.

Java still so popular after all this time. I've been re-learning java using the excellent University of Helsinki's MOOC course.

Was thinking of learning some spring boot and create a small project or two to reinforce what I've learned. However it feels like tutorials for spring boot is of so much lower quality compared to newer language/frameworks like JS/React/Python. Often times it's just a talking head over a powerpoint presentation talking for 30 minutes.

Could people recommend me a good tutorial for spring boot (or anything java that is being used in enterprises)?

Now that everyone knows he's an easy mark. He's going to have his entire archive thoroughly combed by these trolls and can expect further shakedowns in the future.

The"too ugly"has been my reaction as well.

That said, I can't even elaborate as to why I feel that way.

I'm totally fine with Material design, Fluent design or Apple's HIG, kde or gnome default looks. But this is just... not for me.

I wonder if a ui/ux expert could put into words why so many others feel the same.

Re:Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 awarded to Nihon Hidankyo on Friday October 11, 2024 @06:41AM (#41808241)
As some other commenters have pointed out: It is lamentable that the focus is almost always on the atomic bombing itself instead of why it came to that point at all.

Many Asian countries feel scant sympathy toward Japan. From Indonesia to Malaysia to the Philipipines or even worse and for much longer, in Korea and China. In each of these countries the Japanese perpetrated massacre, forced labour, gang rape and forced prostitution in the millions. Even European women who were stranded in their former colonies were not spared. In fact their diaries are the foremost historical sources.

Their brutality is such that the hatred towards colonialist European nations were ameliorated and pretty much forgotten these days. It's sickening to me that outside East and Southeast Asia itself, most of the world only remember Nagasaki and Hiroshima when it comes to casualties in the Pacific theatre of WW2.

This sympathy felt even more misplaced considering even to this very day, unlike Germany, Japanese historiograpy deliberately downplays Japan brutality during occupation or that there was any aggression on their part at all. Most Japanese college mates in the US that I've talked to were not even aware that Japan occupied my country for years resulting in millions of casualties.

>Agreed, yet the median Chinese person remains poor by global standards (median household income is 33k yuan/yr as Stats CN has announced).

Surely the likes of COVID as well as the housing crisis had at least 10x more impact than the US' Huawei ban. Housing sector crisis alone affected an estimated 500k people losing their job and between 1-2 trillion USD losses.

It seems to me if Huawei ban had any deterimental effect on China's GDP per capita then it would be more like a rounding error.

I am often disappointed by the lack of shortcuts and features in VLC compared to Potplayer.

Just some of the few keyboard shortcuts in Potplayer I use regularly:

"<" and ">" to shift the subtitle sync by half a secondd "shift-<" and "shift->" to adjust the audio sync by half a second "[" and "]" to set an A-B repeat of that awesome scene or soundtrack "D" and "F" to move by a single frame forward and backward there's also shortcut to decrease and increase things like saturation and brightness by 1% or shortcuts for 0.5x, 1x, 2x size.

I have to make do with SMplayer in Linux which is awesome but you have to setup the keyboard shortcuts manually yourself.

Hmm, it was the official Odin project discord server.

I noticed very few submission in the "success stories" channel and people being very doom and gloom about the whole tech apocalypse.

I moved to Southeast Asia. Foothills, small-ish city (around 100k inhabitant) but rather popular with the western crowd since it is less than an hour away from major city but very cheap and has cool weather all year around.

Anyways, Javascript eh? So between Native Android development and Frontend, you'd recommend Frontend? Guess it's back to Odin project then.

Ask HN: How would -you- find and get a remote entry-level job?

To make it short, I live in a developing nation. My start-up had a very promising beginning but covid killed it and the changing business landscape means it never picks up traction again.I have moved to a very low COL place in order to save money and have been thinking about getting a remote IT job.- I've lived in Germany and the US so I speak both languages fluently.- I've studied CS in the US...
