It used to be a flex to say you deploy daily but it’s going to become a necessity just to keep up with the vulns

Re:11 year old unsoundness bugs found in Rust borrow checker on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:16AM (#50071227)
It seems the bug here was caught by Asan instead of at compile time, so basically, for this one bug, rust is reduced to C++-like behavior. You’re still better off using rust because of all the bugs the borrow checker does catch.

The practical upshot to me is that you should be running your rust tests under asan.

Are you talking about WeChat, or truth social? I didn’t know nitter worked on either

Until Twitter sues the newspapers for rehosting their (users’) content
Re:Nitter: Update Oct 10th seeking funding and legal help on Sunday October 11, 2026 @09:59AM (#50043376)
This is very clearly an attempt by X to use the legal system to harass people doing perfectly legal things. The chilling effect on speech is the whole point

The rest of that document makes a pretty compelling case for why this is a bad practice
Re:So You Think You Could Be an Electrician? on Sunday October 04, 2026 @02:00PM (#49956233)
Flipping the breaker for each circuit as you start and finish working on it sounds eminently reasonable
Re:So You Think You Could Be an Electrician? on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:53PM (#49950454)
Why not just shut off the breaker though? What’s the harm in that?
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @11:17PM (#49903976)
They literally did replace power plants with these batteries though. From the article: “ GMP similarly used to rely on oil, diesel and natural gas peaker plants to meet peak demand. Now the company's virtual power plant has effectively replaced them, says McClure. "We've been slowly able to decommission those as they've become end-of-life," she says.”
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:04PM (#49903082)
Which version do you have? I believe they switched to LFP for V3, which should pose significantly less fire risk than the NMC chemistry they were using for V2 and before
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:51PM (#49902995)
I think they mean to use EV batteries would require the EV to be designed for V2G capability, which is currently rare
Re:The US state replacing power plants with home batteries on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:49PM (#49902974)
It seems like an unreservedly good thing if people with home batteries can help prevent brownouts and reduce prices for everyone else. Also, I believe the $150/day figure was during a rare heatwave event when prices had surged to 100x their typical value ($5/kWh). It’s like any other investment where you outlay cash upfront and hope to make it back over time, whether via reduced costs for your own electricity usage or selling it back to the grid when doing so is profitable.
> Anyway, for a bit of context: the current first orbital flight, with 26 satellites deploying right now, is adding the same amount of Starlink bandwidth as 10+ F9 launches.

The mass being launched is roughly 50 metric tons, which is a bit over twice F9’s capacity. Yet it took something like 10x the propellant because of the fundamental rocket equation. I don’t think there’s a path to starship being economical

I don’t think reliable data exists for making these comparisons, but even if it did, how you perform on an IQ test is strongly influenced by your schooling.
Re:How much oil-market buffer is left? on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @04:45PM (#49718682)
The Solterra got a lot better in the 2026 model year. It’s not a bottom-tier EV anymore. (Disclosure: I have one)
Re:How much oil-market buffer is left? on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @04:33PM (#49718521)
Subaru dealers near me have the Trailseeker, an EV comparable to the Outback, listed around $35k

I tried to create an account but Elon banned it within a couple of hours for being inauthentic. Ironic given the large number of bots on the site
Re:XCancel Taken Down Again on Monday September 14, 2026 @04:00PM (#49703078)
Twitter stopped publishing stats on its user counts when it went private, so we don’t know if those have gone up, down, or sideways. We do have some numbers for Europe since about 2023 because of reporting mandates, and they seem to show a downward trend.
Re:Global Shortage Has Led to Motor Oil Rationing at Costco on Sunday September 13, 2026 @04:10PM (#49688183)
They do have some gearbox oil that is usually considered to last a lifetime but some sources advise changing it every 100k miles or so. This is analogous to transmission fluid in an ICEV.
Re:Global Shortage Has Led to Motor Oil Rationing at Costco on Sunday September 13, 2026 @03:55PM (#49687998)
Not having to deal with oil changes is one of the many benefits of driving an EV

Re:Buy Your Friends Batteries on Monday August 17, 2026 @02:12PM (#49335247)
The battery linked in the article (https://eu.ecoflow.com/products/stream-series-solar-battery) advertises a 15 year lifespan and 10 year warranty. Personally I would expect batteries to last longer than that but 12 years feels fair
Re:Europe EV Sales BEVs Jump 50% & Reach 26% Market Share on Sunday August 02, 2026 @08:27PM (#49149833)
In the U.S. our standard outlets are 120V, so you only get about 1kW or so out of them. Plenty for most people, but annoying if you need >50 miles of range a day, or if you want to boil water in an electric kettle. The situation is much better in Europe, and most of the rest of the world, where you have 220+V
