I like this, it's simple and easy to skim. I'd suggest adding date/time so the user knows when the article was published.
Re:Validation Board, A Free Tool to Vet Your Startup Idea on Tuesday October 02, 2012 @12:51PM (#4602920)
I did a Lean Startup Machine workshop the other weekend where we learned to utilize this board. It was an awesome workshop and I learned a lot.

This board helps you iterate over your idea. It's like agile development, but focusing on the idea.

As a woman in a start up and indeed generally as a member of a start up, I find this recent uproar about Sheryl Sandberg quite frustrating.

I'll admit that I didn't watch the interview that she just did. However, I did see her speak this past year at the Grace Hopper Conference. Yes, she goes home at 5.30 to eat with her kids, but in this digital age it doesn't mean she is done with work. She just uses technology to timeshift and work when it best fits into her life. She goes home so she can be with her kids while they are awake but she's still responding to emails and does work after her kids are asleep. This is the beauty of digital age.

While I don't have kids, or a even significant other, I do, however, have a personal life that I refuse to sacrifice because I am in a start up. I'm sure many of you feel the same; this means I do work, I go out with my friends, come home and do more work. Maybe I wake up earlier then everyone else, work on weekends, etc. This is no different than what Sandberg does.

Re:Jewish problems on Tuesday October 11, 2011 @08:27AM (#3098260)
The reasons Jews stereotypically have a lot of money is because for the majority of history it was illegal for them to own land. Instead they turned to business and banking. Since it's forbidden to lend in the Christian religion, Jews excelled in this area.

Not the best source but check out the first paragraph of this http://www.jewishhistory.org/the-rothschilds/

"In the Middle Ages, the Church, in a misapplication of the Biblical prohibition against charging interest, forbade interest in all instances. The Talmud, in contrast, created an economic system in which loans could be converted into investments, so interest could accrue from them, but under the Christian interpretation, no credit market was possible. The way the Church got around that was by forcing the Jews to become the bankers. "

Re:What Are Websites Made Of? [Infographic] on Tuesday August 09, 2011 @01:49PM (#2864957)
IE probably has huge numbers because it's prevalent in the corporate world. Most corporations use Microsoft and either discourage or prevent their employees from downloading other browsers. If these people that are forced to use IE at work aren't tech savvy then they probably continue using IE at home.
Re:How My School and District Failed its Students on Wednesday February 09, 2011 @02:50PM (#2199023)
Ya, this is definitely true. I can't attest to children being that beaten badly in India, but when I taught at an elementary school in the Himalayas beating the students was common place. The first day I walked into a classroom I was given a bamboo stick by the child in charge of the class.

First I tried not resorting to the stick, then I would scare the students with the stick (by swinging at them and missing or stopping just short or their body), but eventually they learned I wouldn't actually hit them. The class would occasionally get so bad that the child in charge of the class would go around and hit his own classmates.

Unfortunately they responded to the abuse and would quiet down.

I think it's all the culture. It goes back to how the parents discipline the kids and how primary school teachers discipline the students.

I don't believe in corporal punishment in any school, I think this problem can be solved in

Re:Ask HN: What face recognition framework should I use? on Tuesday February 08, 2011 @11:42AM (#2193504)
This is really cool. I may start with this and then move to OpenCV. The thing about this is that I want to be able to rate how the algorithm did so I can constantly improve the algorithm. Here the algorithm seems to be abstracted.

Cool, thank you.

Ask HN: What face recognition framework should I use?

I have an idea for an app I'd like to build that compares similar faces (I'd rather not say much more than that about the app) and I was wondering if anyone has advice about which face recognition framework I should use.I know I can just google this and get a bunch of frameworks, but I'd like your advice.

Re:Why Your Form Buttons Should Never Say 'Submit' on Monday January 10, 2011 @11:58AM (#2088969)
I don't understand why this got down voted. You can't assume that users will have experience with the internet. I work with a lot of people have little experience with technology and the internet and whose second language is English and they don't understand when they see "submit."
Check out this paper 'FlyByNight: mitigating the privacy risks of social networking' (it can be found on ACM). http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1456405&dl=GUIDE&#...

These people tried something like your idea. If you're going to do something like what they did then in my opinion it isn't really feasible. For starters there are scalability issues. Also, if you're concerned about your privacy but want to message someone who doesn't have this app then you're forced to message them insecurely. I remember having some other reservations about this when I read it but it's been a few months and I've forgotten them.

Ask HN: What options exist for a recent CS graduate?

I graduate this spring with a bachelors and masters degree in CS (dual degree program). I know I have a lot of options ... big corporations, start ups, phd etc. What I really want to do is work in a developing country using the knowledge I've learned in university. EWB is a great organization but I don't think they really have a place for computer scientists.Any suggestions?
