Re:Bootstrap 5 Released on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @05:25PM (#27056015)
Yes, and we'll be adding support for that as opt-in in v5.1.0! Here's a little teaser: https://deploy-preview-31813--twbs-bootstrap.netlify.app/doc....
Re:Bootstrap 5 Released on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @04:59PM (#27055752)
Snark aside, we haven't had anything to do Twitter for almost nine years. They don't do anything for or with Bootstrap :).
Re:Bootstrap 5 Released on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @04:58PM (#27055738)
Not yet, sorry! RTL was our big feature addition that came with some significant departures. Tried to keep the breaking changes and overhauls to a minimum compared to the v3-v4 migration.

Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @10:04PM (#23546911)
Yup, and we're looking at dropping Legacy Edge from our supported browsers for this reason as well. As of right now, we still have v17 and v18 in there, but there's a PR open to remove.
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:37PM (#23546719)
Thanks! <3

Who knows how long this will take with the pandemic (and I work full-time at GitHub, and most of the team has full-time jobs), so all that does slow us down. That said, this should be faster than v4's development, and with fewer and smaller breaking changes by comparison.

I wouldn't start getting into the weeds with it in any kind of production environment until the beta though honestly. Release date for stable v5 is hopefully months away.

Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:35PM (#23546708)
With how the web has evolved over the years, we've been caught on the side of being too far behind and being too far ahead. We want to move faster and find the right balance. v4 was a bit of a nightmare scenario, and upgrading from v3 was nuts. v4 to v5 _should_ be much simpler by comparison. Still some breaking changes, but nothing like before.

And yes! Definitely something that you can theoretically run forever without issue. Browsers basically have to keep supporting the historical properties, quirks, etc, so once you've built it, you're largely good to go :).

Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:33PM (#23546689)
Nope! We're a small distributed team that works on Bootstrap when we can. Jacob and I created it at Twitter, but we took it with us in 2012 when we both left :).
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:32PM (#23546685)
Reinventing the wheel is awesome! More people, myself included, need to build from scratch and learn ourselves every now and then. Definitely interested in more tooling around helping folks getting started, too. Spent a lot of time on the customizing side for this release.
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:30PM (#23546666)
Unsure how we'll tackle this overall, but we are looking at increased customization and variants for a handful of key components. This might be a mistake, and if so, we'll hope to hear it in the alphas so we can shift gears and do dark mode across the framework. That said, it could be too far reaching and mean it'd come in v6.
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:29PM (#23546656)
To clarify, v5 removes jQuery, but not our JavaScript—we've rewritten everything to work without it.
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:29PM (#23546652)
I feel you! Good news is IE11 is going end of life soon and it's increasing less of a concern. Legacy Edge is still there to fill the void though :D.
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:26PM (#23546630)
Very happy to hear this for both of you! Bootstrap 2 was life changing for us to create and share :). <3
Re:Bootstrap 5 alpha on Tuesday June 16, 2020 @09:25PM (#23546622)
Speaking to the lifetime of each major version—Bootstrap 4 can't go into any kind of LTS situation until v5 is fully stable. That's going to take a few months just being honest, so I fully expect v4 to be around into 2021.

We've also maintained security patches and more for v3 where appropriate well past the LTS for the web's sake. While we try to have guidelines around it, we want to help move things forward for the web :).

Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @01:34PM (#14992297)
Hey, that's awesome! Reminds me that Bootstrap started over six years ago from a Less variable and mixin library (http://getpreboot.com).
Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @01:32PM (#14992269)
We'll be working on moving on from jQuery. When we finally decided to commit to it, it was too late in the v4 alpha process to really spend significant time doing it. We'll be piece-meal updating our plugins to drop it.

Lots of folks like to shit on jQuery these days, but it changed JS forever. We're still using it while focusing on other things, and you can easily swap it out for something else or use a ported version of our JS for React, Angular, etc.

In short, yes, and we'll get there in time <3.

Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @03:29AM (#14987380)
1) There are tools to do this for you in any project :).

2) Bootstrap 4 includes dozens of utilities like these and more. Still have some to add, but there are tons.

3) Our theme state is busted in the beta it will be there for final. Open to feedback!

4) v4 has cards. Spinners are slated for v4.1. Toasts are slated for v4.2 I think. Peep the project pulls page :).

5) Everyone else does amazing icons. We pulled our icon font out long ago in v4. Use any SVG library.

6) That’s a solid idea. Care to open an issue for it!? :D

Take a look at the new v4 beta docs and let me know what else is missing or cumbersome for you, please. <3

Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @03:25AM (#14987366)
Probably gonna stick with some Sass stuff for awhile, tackling components and JS behaviors we haven’t done in the past. There’s some major stuff we’re missing even before CSS grid layout (which doesn’t have super great support today).
Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @03:23AM (#14987357)
Yup, Johann is going to slowly tackle rewriting plugins in vanilla JS. That’s a big task, but we’ll do it in time.
Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @03:22AM (#14987353)
Fixed! Sorry about that :).

Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @03:18AM (#14987333)
It’s past midnight by me and I’m heading to bed, but I’ll pop back here tomorrow to answer questions and follow up with folks. Thanks for the kind words so far, and any and all feedback coming our way :).

Huge thanks to the contributors and our team for pushing so hard recently. Feels amazing to have a beta out finally.

Why yes, it will!

I'm late to this thread, but I don't check Hacker News often and missed the tweet from @tedmiston. The first beta is coming soon—I basically spent all weekend working on it while recovering from a cold. There's a project on our GitHub repo for tracking the outstanding todos: https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/projects/3.

(There's also one for the second beta, too, which you'll notice is quite narrow in in focus right now :).)

I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm exhausted and haven't had time to work on open source. GitHub takes up the bulk of my time—ask my dog and my girlfriend—and I don't often have the energy to switch contexts. I'm working on that though. Suffice to say that yes, we'll have a release soon.

Also, I do still plan on going back to Bootstrap 3 and shipping some updates there. That version took so much of my time and we iterated on it quite heavily. It's super stable still.

Hope that helps!

I hear you two. I'll look into it for the beta. Opened an issue at https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/issues/21581 — feel free to chime in with any specific examples or requests.
Re:Bootstrap 4 Alpha 6 Released on Friday January 06, 2017 @02:15PM (#13339283)
Folks seemed to expect the `!important`s to always ensure the utility classes are applied properly. https://twitter.com/mdo/status/684261888046190594
Re:Bootstrap 4 Alpha 6 Released on Friday January 06, 2017 @01:12PM (#13338633)
You're showing an arbitrary HTML snippet here, not Bootstrap's grid system. Add the grid markup and make sure your image is responsive, and you'll get https://jsfiddle.net/q39rq6eu/6/.
