Re:I've screwed up plenty of things too on Tuesday February 11, 2020 @10:23PM (#22305447)
A little over a month into my first engineering job, I decided to go for a weekend stroll. I threw my work laptop into my messenger bag on the off chance I'd wind up in a cafe and feel like checking email or poking at some code. Started the day right with a hearty breakfast burrito, popped into the health food store down the street to pick up a couple bottles of local kombucha for later (gotta have those probiotics), and off I went.

After two or three hours of exploring, I noticed something weird: it was a sunny LA afternoon, but I felt something like a drop of liquid hit the back of my leg. I kept walking, but felt another drop, so I stopped and checked. Yep, definitely real and definitely liquid. Also, it smelled like vinegar. Where was it coming from? Who would do such a thing, and how?

Perplexed, I walked on, until my bag started emitting a drawn-out Mac startup tone, and I realized just what I'd done. I opened it up, and sure enough: the seal on one of my kombucha bottles had failed, and its entire contents had emptied into my new work laptop.

If I may, I get the strong sense that your hesitation isn't really about the unvested $$.

Can you tell us more about the nonprofit you'd like to start?

D'oh, I had not seen that. Sorry!

You might give OpenHatch a look:

https://openhatch.org/search/?language=Python&q=

You can avoid the marginal libraries written by inexperienced developers, you know.
Re:Walking in L.A. on Friday April 14, 2017 @09:37AM (#14114361)
"The landscape favors autos but not in the same way as a city like Atlanta, favoring a regular grid with sidewalks over cul-de-sac deadends."

Lots of people miss this distinction. (I did, too, before you articulated it.) It's why I find LA quite pleasant despite not being a car owner.

Re:Exam Credit for Knowing What You Do Not Know on Saturday March 04, 2017 @04:16PM (#13792977)
I was hoping this would look something more like, given a scenario and a question about it, being able to clearly identify the pieces of information without which the question is unanswerable.

That said, time saving and BS reduction are also valuable goals!

Agreed in principle. Limited liability is created by statute, and can and should be rolled back as needed to prevent pathological outcomes.
Re:How we broke PHP, hacked Pornhub and earned $20k on Saturday July 23, 2016 @02:28PM (#12150458)
Crazy indeed, but it happens to be the case.

PHP won't win you any cool points, but there's still a whole lot of it running in production.

NPOV applies to content, not the editor's motives. People have all kinds of reasons for editing Wikipedia. Trying to police those reasons would be neither possible nor desirable.
Re:Bootcamps vs. College on Thursday May 19, 2016 @10:33PM (#11735246)
Bear in mind that the tech job market is a lot different than much of the U.S. economy right now. There are fields where experienced candidates with strong resumes can go job hunting and hear crickets. To go from that to not really needing any formal credential is a big mental leap.
Re:Chrome removes Backspace to go back on Thursday May 19, 2016 @10:27PM (#11735231)
Thank god.
By the same token, my layman's understanding is that you can kill demand for a very good product or service by pricing it too low (and thereby signaling inferior quality to the customer).

This section was 100% written by a lawyer, and is intended to sound obvious without in fact being obvious at all.
Re:Instagram's Million Dollar Bug on Thursday December 17, 2015 @08:01PM (#10755900)
Without defending the researcher here, I thought that was the weakest point in Facebook's response. Was he interacting with Facebook using his synack.com email address during this exchange rather than at some point in the past? Was he signed up on Facebook with his synack.com address? (I haven't used the bug bounty program but it appears to require a user account.) Did he mention his employment with Synack in the course of the exchange? If any of those things were true, I suspect they'd say so, rather than leaving it at "has interacted..."

I don't know, if the guy was just shaking them down then maybe trying to get him fired is indeed a reasonable thing to do, but I don't buy that anyone would have just assumed under the circumstances that he was doing all of this on the clock.

Yep. Definitely time for this tiresome exercise to die.
Re:The Specialists: Di Fara Pizza on Tuesday March 17, 2015 @10:38PM (#9223269)
I had a boss who grew up in the neighborhood and held that Di Fara's was a touch overrated (if memory serves, he favored Totonno's or L&B). Still, incredible pizza to this midwestern boy.

Yeah, definitely prepare to wait... and to assert your place in line.

Re:Solving Exercism Problems – Learn with Peers on Tuesday March 17, 2015 @12:55PM (#9219318)
I did a few exercises a while back in the Python, Ruby, and JS modules. Feedback from other users seems minimal; I only received one comment from another user and one automated comment. I haven't commented on others' code, either, but still, it was good practice.
Re:Senator Hatch: It's Time to Kill Patent Trolls for Good on Monday March 16, 2015 @02:31PM (#9213312)
Passing it through Congress, you mean? I'm optimistic. Reasonable people can differ philosophically on IP issues, but even someone in favor of long patent terms and broad patentability can recognize that patent trolling is a classic abuse of the judicial system.
Well... it doesn't. This strikes me as a pretty unconvincing definition of "commercial activity" and obviously implicates free speech rights. (That said, if the operators facing trouble are most often getting ratted out to the FAA by business competitors, that does suggest that there's commercial activity somewhere in the background.) My read is that the agency is just trying to hold would-be drone operators at bay until it actually has clear legal authority to regulate (which is in progress).
This is true, but only to a point. In principle, if the reasoning is flawed in some obvious way (say, writing a memo on executive power during wartime without citing Youngstown Steel, the leading case on the subject), other people with requisite training will sooner or later recognize that, and the error will be corrected.

Of course, this requires public scrutiny to work. Hence the problems with secret legal memos and secret court opinions.

Re:A Liquid Nitrogen Cocktail Party on Tuesday January 13, 2015 @02:33PM (#8881976)
I'm thinking of buying Liquid Intelligence for my sister and brother-in-law, but I'm half-worried they'll think I'm subtly trying to kill them.
Thanks. And just to be clear, I wasn't saying 50K is anything but entirely reasonable for someone in my position, just that 100K coming out of a bootcamp seems unlikely. And that's OK! Money is nice, but my main motivation is that I love programming.
I just finished such a bootcamp and I'm looking for a job. I'm in an geographic area where there's somewhat of a shortage of tech talent. My plan was to save up for Hack Reactor or similar (I have some experience, but not professionally, and no CS degree) but I had the opportunity to do this one for free. We've had several companies interested in recruiting, albeit not the coolest startups on the block.

I do not anticipate starting at $100k - maybe half that if I'm lucky.
