I assume even if it isn't, attacker could deface the website so heavily everyone would know they win.
Re:Cartographers of North Korea on Monday October 12, 2026 @12:40AM (#50051454)
I feel like while IMDb seems like something that'll eventually exist sooner or later, TvTropes is not, thus it is the true marvel of the internet. If it's down, I don't see anyone recreating it (apart from some forks that's mostly archiving the old entries anyway).
Re:Exit the Cave on Thursday September 03, 2026 @03:45AM (#49547075)
Even for this, I still need outside perspective, especially when I (currently) fail at it badly. Do I fail to increase my barbell by 1 kg because I haven't tried enough, or because it's what only 0.001% people managed to do and I'm likely not one of them? I guess this may make me solve one or two unsolved math problem that I don't know is unsolved, but I don't want to count on it.
Re:True Rate of Unemployment on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @05:09AM (#49533739)
And this is why I'm irritated whenever a comment just thoughtlessly answer "Just raise your offer bro". There might be some transaction barriers that make paying a service no longer worth it, one of them is the amount of fraud like you mentioned, another is societal problem that reduces people's competency as a whole so competent people becomes too few to search.
Re:Reverse Engineering My ADHD Test on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @08:47PM (#49530368)
Yeah it feels like the diagnosis itself is useless, compared to just straight up trying some of those drugs and see how much you feel better. If none works, then no use in diagnosis.
Re:Trade (and Tariffs) on Friday August 28, 2026 @12:22AM (#49474339)
Yeah the comic seems to imply that tariffs are always always bad. Which maybe what's in mind for free trade absolutists, but is certainly not my opinion. Current administration may wield it very horribly, but it's still a useful tool.

Another analogy that's in my mind is cancer. You certainly don't want to provide more nutrition for those literally parasitic cells.

Yeah 1 MB is too big for my part. But I mean is there anyone hacking with computers in 50s when it's still vacuum tubes and to get 100KB RAM you already need "supercomputer".
Now I'm curious, do people actually tried to hack vacuum tubes or other big servers that's barely 1MB RAM? It seems like another thing that needs big investment to work properly, unlike those other techs where results can be shown even with little materials.
Re:The Wonders of the Male Human Pelvis on Thursday August 20, 2026 @10:09PM (#49382854)
I'm still curious on how much this is an artefact of less participants that run >150km marathons. The link in the other comment compiles data over lots of runners from lots of marathons, but I still haven't found data about how much actually runs the >150km marathons.
Re:Two wheels, a few tradeoffs, and gas prices on Sunday August 09, 2026 @10:38PM (#49238635)
About the risk part, I'm still not really sure how third world countries traffic change the equation. There are a lot of them so cars have to already account for them by default. The sheer quantity also makes traffic slower, and when accidents do happen, when it's between motorcycles there's not that much energy involved compared to cars accident. Also people here rarely have motorcycle with >150cc so accident impact is reduced even further.

But we also have much worse roads and people drive much more recklessly. But maybe this is risk compensation in action. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_compensation

Re:Show HN: Reverse Minesweeper on Sunday July 26, 2026 @09:44PM (#49064281)
Strangely I also easily solve insane, then I try extreme. First I can solve with difficulty, second I almost gave up and it do need some whole board logic. Haven't tried third.
Re:Kids (With Phones) Are Alright on Tuesday July 14, 2026 @10:10PM (#48915430)
It's still funny how much it's celebrated because it brings down establishments, not realizing it'll also bring down their own. Reminds me of why no one should start biological warfare.
The other comment said that obviously no solo dev do everything by himself. They must have asset maker or song maker who do all things mostly uncredited. But, here we are, of course there are true solo devs!
With worst case of O(n^2) though? In hindsight it should be possible, since if we use insertion sort, we also get best of O(n) and worst of O(n^2). Though quick select do have average O(n).
Yeah I guess this is a legit problem, but also applies to foreign language warnings. Especially ones who have manual written in foreign glyphs.
Feels like it'd be easier to differentiate jingles compared to different words of a language you don't know. You can vary intonations etc, but by that point you're back to jingles.
Re:Introduction to Genomics for Engineers on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @04:27AM (#48815034)
There always seems to be a difference between the "normal" stamp collecting biology, and the anatomy/genetics biology. The latter part is always more fascinating to me (and I'm better at it) than the former. In essence, intra-organism biology >> inter-organism biology.
Re:Internal Combustion Engine on Thursday July 02, 2026 @04:42AM (#48758371)
It's unclear to me, why would the compression stroke (the 2nd out of 4) happens? There's nothing pushing the piston upwards.
Re:What to Learn to Be a Graphics Programmer on Thursday July 02, 2026 @03:32AM (#48757816)
Any resources? It actually sounds more interesting to me since hearing about Rollback Netcode. Any front-end thing always gives me headache anyway.
The beer part is relatable. I've seen people advising on cutting soda, beer, any sweety beverages. I've only consumed water for years now and here I am. Though i imagine if I do drink those beverages I'd be even bigger.
Yeah I've seen people try to push choice into kids as early as possible, while some students remain in doubt long into adulthood.
My hope is that whatever makes hardware prices go down over last decades would eventually work again now. I guess CPU is a dead end, but why not RAM and storage?
Re:Steam Machine on Monday June 22, 2026 @09:50PM (#48639148)
Aaah so scalpers are only as bad as they are because they corner the market. Thanks, I think this is the only reasonable explanation that don't just ignore supply and demand mechanism.

Anglicized Arabic I guess. In my spelling, it is Musa.
Re:U.S. Science Is in Chaos on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @09:29PM (#48579407)
Sounds like this is what's still done in last decade Amazon who didn't report profit for so long. Though it's also stopped by another regulatory change that no longer regards S&W dev as R&D for tax purposes, but I don't remember the name.
Re:U.S. Science Is in Chaos on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @09:11PM (#48579273)
I've actually heard suggestions to do that, at least.
Re:Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books? on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @01:49AM (#48566255)
I'm curious how correlated they are to decline of books in general
Re:Calvin and Hobbes and the Price of Integrity on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @10:30PM (#48565033)
Heh I never expect to see Demon Girl Next Door in public let alone in HN of all places. Seems like I'll have to see that backstabbed whatever too eventhough I never touched any work of that genre.
