News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

mcgyver

Bots of some kind crossed my mind. I find it interesting there has been no announcements from dang about the change in behaviour - unless I've just missed them.
I went hunting for stats of topic trends on HN as the whole AI thing has gone bananas. Looking at the "ChatGPT" keyword chart [1] the volume is crazy and seems to line up time wise. It is a correlation but not sure if it is the right one.

Ask HN: What is causing the major growth in new HN users?

This was brought up by some months back [1] and was judged by dang to be a spike due to YC applicants. Assuming, the the data here [2] is accurate, what is the explanation for new user growth and are the new users causing any issues?[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35009073[2] https://hackernews-insight.vercel.app/user-analysis

Ask YC/HN: Optimal state...

Where in a startup/product's life cycle does it make the most sense jump into YC?Obviously there are a huge number of variables that make each case different but does anyone have recommendations or experience they would care to share?

Re:Applications Open For Summer 2011 YC Funding Cycle on Sunday January 16, 2011 @07:13PM (#2110730)
My co-founder and I are looking to apply but it looks like I might have a baby due during the 3-months-in-SV stage and hence need to be close to base (Australia). Looks like I'll be hanging out for the following round. Good luck to everyone applying!

Ask HN: What information to store on the off chance of the Apocalypse?

Given 1 GB in printed pages is about 3.9 million (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1+gigabyte+in+pages), how much would you store, what topics are most important (specifically in the areas of: survival in the wild, technology for rebuilding civilization, historical records, anything I've forgotten?), what media/medium would you store it on and how would you go about gathering it?

Re:Ask HN: which obscure Github projects have you found useful? on Tuesday November 23, 2010 @05:29PM (#1935654)
The explore page offers a great snapshot. The search page is totally awesome too (seriously, it works really well) but only when you are looking for something in particular. It feels like there is a mind-boggling amount of potentially useful things sitting there that no one ever knows to play with because the people behind the projects aren't very good at PR or aren't looking for high usage of their product. I guess the main barrier to testing out projects/apps is the difficulty of installation. You have to know you want the product a lot to go through with the effort to get it up and going. I guess that's why recommendations can be a good guide to making sure it's worth the effort.

Ask HN: Is FireSheep prevention now high on your app's priority list?

I'm not planning to launch my next app for a while but I'm really not wanting to go down the annoying path of SSL/TLS if my app doesn't go anywhere. Is this really the turning point where SSL/TLS is now an expected feature? I know patio11 has been active in changing over but after having some time to think about it, are other HNers planning on retrofitting old apps and implementing this stuff...

Re:Diaspora Developer Release on Wednesday September 15, 2010 @11:25PM (#1696720)
Interesting to see it released under GPL3(+). Looks like they want any distributed modifications going back to the community.
It's interesting too that despite the author's posting of an Analytics screen shot (of visitors I take it) there is no proof that the auto following itself has brought about the spiked traffic. For all we know it could be due to the author posting spam-links in other social media platforms that has produced some mild interest.

Is there a stash of interesting imports available anywhere?
Re:A Letter to Adobe Flash: At Least Consider Open Source on Saturday May 01, 2010 @09:34PM (#1311694)
Open sourcing Flash would definitely be in Adobe's best interests. The only possible thing holding them back is shoddy coding practices (using security-through-obscurity) which would result in more exploits and the Flash player gaining an even worse reputation.
