Re:Git for US Legislation on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:57AM (#50271176)
There's a good chance it could have the opposite effect. The public doesn't pay as much attention to the workings of the government as donors do.

It's essentially an extension of the Sunshine Act of 1976, which made congressional votes public. There were claims that before it was enacted, legislators were able to vote their consciences, but then lie to donors and tell them they voted for their interests instead of their constituents' interests.

Since it passed, the public has been paying attention, but not like the donor class has been. Something needs to be not only bad, but have some sort of novel or salacious quality to make the news. If it's not near an election, people forget, if they paid attention to begin with. Donors pay attention. Representatives know this.

Ultimately, the problem is the money in politics, but this sort of thing can exacerbate the effects.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:07PM (#50136006)
It's not. You're accusing others of the things you're doing even though they don't deserve it. Neither of us is getting space rocks.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:03AM (#50131278)
How about you get over your political leanings. Stop accusing people who have legitimate doubts of things they don't deserve. In the context of astronautics, this tech is not earthshattering.

>People would love the flying car if Elon endorsed Kamala

Not true. It's clearly a stunt. Not practical. Nobody wants this on our roads by our houses.

>would have ignored his...

Not true. The left is famously quite critical of Democrats.

>if you are honest

I am, and I don't deserve the insinuation that I'm not. You're not assuming good faith, not only for me, but for the other commenters.

>Reddit

This is HN

>projecting their political stance on anything Elon does

You are quite literally doing that.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @06:25AM (#50129715)
TDS isn't real. And if it were real, it would describe the people who support him even though they would never support someone else who has done or said even 100th of the things he's done or said.
Re:Does Georgism Work? Five Years Later on Saturday September 26, 2026 @09:46PM (#49862530)
Not misleading. Rent-seeking is an undesirable behavior, and it's the primary behavior a land value tax targets. Hoarding limited resources is an undesirable behavior. Making products that have negative environmental impacts is an undesirable behavior.
Re:Does Georgism Work? Five Years Later on Saturday September 26, 2026 @08:48PM (#49862143)
Other replies supporting taxing externalities and scarce resources are correct, but it can be generalized as taxing undesirable behavior to disincentivize it.
Re:ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room on Monday September 21, 2026 @09:14AM (#49786891)
According to the android app store, Nearby Glasses doesn't collect any data, while ZuckOff collects app activity.

Why would I want a bluetooth scanner to phone home? Seems untrustworthy. Nearby Glasses wins from a data safety perspective.

Even if that kind of corruption isn't there, these charities are still a net negative for society. Why do the super rich rail against taxes but then donate all of their money to family foundations? There are multiple reasons. Pull on that thread.

I wonder what apps have implemented this now that a few years have passed.

Re:Ambient CSS v3 – Blender meets CSS on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @01:39PM (#49525209)
There was a lot of one-upsmanship at the time. People did it because it was hard. When it wasn't difficult to do anymore, they stopped because it wasn't actually good clean design.

Also, early on, there was an idea that cyberspace should resemble meatspace so the meats don't get confused. That's no longer much of a concern.

Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @01:54PM (#49100769)
You can have multiple instances with Darktable.
Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @01:51PM (#49100733)
I'm on Debian, which is of course behind. I tried installing the flatpak, which is up to date, but the packager removed the AI parts. The only option I have (short of moving to Arch or similar) is AppImage, which doesn't integrate well with the DE.

I get being against AI, but Darktable is very responsible about it according to their release notes. Local only, opt-in only, no nagging. It's not like Adobe trying to push AI on you when you don't want it.

Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @11:17AM (#49098651)
Darktable is great. You can easily do pro-level photo editing. Anything you need for editing RAW files, you can do. The modules are powerful. The UI is good. There is a learning curve, but there are also learning curves for the paid software options.
Re:Darktable on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @11:11AM (#49098577)
Darktable is top class.
I wish PWAs took off, or a "desktop" environment for phones and tablets that allows me to save a simple website shortcut as an app.

I want my phone to be the portal to the places I want to go to and the things I want to see. I want to have the same experience going to a web app or website I regularly visit as with a normal app.

Like, I want to click on an icon and be there. I don't want to click on the browser and then find the tab.

Also, I want PWAs and website shortcuts to be first class citizens. I want a normal icon, not one that has some sort of visual marker that it's not a normal app.

It's been an ongoing annoyance, but it's getting to be more commonplace of an issue because there are a lot of people building cool things on atproto, and they generally start as a web app before they maybe build a phone app.

This is naïve. The US government is less democratic than advertised, and there are many factors for that. Not going to write a tome, but if you're going to point a finger at one group, it shouldn't be private citizens.
Does the city own the land the poles are on?
To whatever degree this site isn't a cesspool, we owe it to Dang, not the bad word police. They didn't swear at you, so there's no reason to get bent out of shape about it.

It's ironic you're taking this stance on an article about a respectable family that literally kept a slave.

There's a difference between superficial trappings of respectability, and actually treating people with respect.

If it operates like most corrupt systems, it binds the have-nots, but not the haves.

Re:Can you see three trees? on Saturday June 20, 2026 @05:30AM (#48607769)
I read Don Quixote and thought it might be fun to visit some parts of Spain mentioned in the books. Then after looking at some maps and seeing a stark lack of trees, I decided I wouldn't enjoy the trip.
Not to load you up with too many ideas, but a markdown folder sounds a lot like obsidian, which has a plugin system now.

Epub would also be a great target.
