Re:Ask HN: Have you made IRL friends from HN usage? on Sunday November 26, 2023 @10:02PM (#38427603)
They pop up every now and then. Wouldn't say it's a common thing. Fwiw the overlap between a random tech meetup and HN users is probably pretty high. I've gone to a few in SF from meetup.com
Re:Ask HN: Have you made IRL friends from HN usage? on Sunday November 26, 2023 @06:33PM (#38426292)
It was a good time for sure. I worked there 7.5 years before leaving. Still keep in contact with a lot of people from that job. On the first work day of the month there are hiring threads on HN if you end up wanting to check those out
Re:Ask HN: Have you made IRL friends from HN usage? on Sunday November 26, 2023 @06:21PM (#38426178)
I've gotten a job through HN which has turned in to friendship if that counts. Every now and then meetups popup too which are cool
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023) on Saturday October 07, 2023 @12:21PM (#37803013)
I believe it's US remote only. It can't hurt to apply though. The recruiting team may have other roles that are more globally available that they can point you to.

You can reach me in the email from my original comment or my profile. My first and last name is in my hn profile
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023) on Tuesday October 03, 2023 @07:47PM (#37759087)
Sorry to hear that. If it's for the role in my link or another product eng role let me know and I can have someone look in to it for you. If not the recruiter you're talking to is likely your best bet.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023) on Monday October 02, 2023 @11:08PM (#37747524)
Awesome to hear you're interested! You can apply directly through the website there with your resume and someone from our recruiting team will reach out if there is a fit

Re:Cloudflare had a partial outage on Tuesday June 21, 2022 @03:00AM (#31820939)
It's times like these when I'm appreciative of the simplicity of the HN tech stack. Was talking to some people on discord when it went down and then noticed some other websites were down. Came right to HN to see 5 different threads about this. Will be curious to see what the cause of the issue turns out to be
Re:Ask HN: What's a Good Gift for Programmers? on Friday December 10, 2021 @12:49AM (#29506836)
I really enjoy my pbt key caps. Programmers spend all day at the keyboard and the oils from their fingers wear down the key caps and make their keyboards look terrible. PBT feels better and takes longer to break down. You can get a good set for $30. Just make sure the key caps on their keyboards come off.

Logitech also makes some nice wireless mice around $100 that are pretty ergonomic and comfortable to use. Anything to help prevent carpel tunnel is nice.

A lot of programmers really love the jetbrains tool suite, but that's more subscription based.

A lot of free database viewer tools pale in comparison to their paid counterparts. So something in that arena could be nice

I thought the same thing, but I found it hard to find views of inside of the apartments I sampled from the article. A lot of the apartment websites just talked about the amenities. Some had a floor plan, but no pictures of what the inside actually looked like. For a $7mil+ condo I was expecting a little more, but I'm also not really the target audience of those condos either
This reminds me of the Internet Explorer antitrust issue. Eventually Microsoft had to give users a choice on start up. Not sure if it directly led to better browsers or not, but it certainly didn't hurt. I could see the outcome being the same here where users will get to choose which store(s) they want on their device during setup rather than defaulting to the play or apple store
I've been running Flux https://justgetflux.com/ for over a decade now. Windows has something similar built in, but it's not as good as Flux in my experience. Flux has the ability to slower change the hue of your screen over time and gives you great control over it at every level. It also lets you set a notif for when you want to get up so when it alerts me that I'm 8.5 hours away from needing to wake up I know I need to start winding down
Re:How to deploy a React app for free on Tuesday August 18, 2020 @02:01AM (#24195734)
So cool to see all the different free services out there for getting in to web dev. I remember having to do graphic design work growing up to afford a shared hosting plan on my mom's credit card. Times have definitely changed :D

Lately I've been enjoying KubeSail's (https://kubesail.com/) free tier for playing around with some SSR things. A lot of the lambda like services don't do great with doing realtime stuff since they're just meant to run one piece of code then die a few seconds later

Yea my first programming job was translating word docs to accessible html for universities. The jobs around section 508 compliance seem mainly government related
I would recommend trying to study up on Section 508 compliance https://www.hhs.gov/web/section-508/index.html. It's a set of rules that all government orgs in the US must follow for making sure their content is accessible. If you do end up becoming visually impaired you'll end up with a unique perspective on building accessible websites.
Re:Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions? on Friday January 03, 2020 @01:51AM (#21943855)
1. Mickey Mouse will enter the public domain

2. An eSports league brings in more revenue than MLS (Major League Soccer).

3. Still no Half Life 3

4. Self driving personal cars aren't a thing yet but, autonomous trucks on highways is common with humans doing the last mile delivery.

5. A FAANG company is broken up due to anti-trust regulation, my guess is Google.

6. Britain ends the decade as part of the EU in some form

7. Quantum computing will become more accessible and people will be solving real business/global problems with it

8. All crypto currencies will be trending (if not already) toward $0

9. At least one global recession, similar to 2008 due to rising debt levels

10. Most in person payments in the US are contactless (Apple/Google Pay) instead of via swiping/inserting a card or paying in cash

It's because the email field has autofocus="autofocus" I believe
> It's fortunate that the best jobs are the most fair, but even if a place sucks, a first SWE job is still a first SWE job.

I think part of this is just the free market at work. Some companies will pass on great talent to meet diversity goals and those that are focused on hiring the best people will end up giving themselves a better chance at succeeding

Re:One year using Kubernetes in production (2016) on Wednesday November 20, 2019 @02:48AM (#21581913)
I think Kubernetes adds quite a bit of complexity if you've never worked with it before. As does any technology though really. Much easier these days to drag sliders right for more server resources if needed from AWS, GCP, Heroku, etc. Sure it'll cost more, but you have 100mil users and if your system doesn't scale horizontally you probably have a problem that isn't going to be solved by Kubernetes or any other orchestration system.

As an aside I think Voat failed because the community that came was toxic and the team behind it had no intentions of quelling it. https://gizmodo.com/goodbye-and-good-riddance-to-voat-reddit...

Re: Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival on Friday November 15, 2019 @04:04PM (#21548750)
Depending on where you find the data, a lot of Americans live paycheck to paycheck [1]. An extra $240 a year will certainly help a lot of people out there, not just in America. That's why free services like Google and Facebook continue to win out. I really like what some companies in the gaming sector have achieved where the richer subsidize the poorer via buying hats and other cosmetics to keep the game free or lower priced.

Sygic is awesome! Used it to plan a trip to Japan and South Korea and it highlighted a bunch of cool attractions that I would have never known about otherwise
Funny quote, though it should be noted San Francisco isn't included in the shut off area
Looks like alt tags for accessibility purposes. Seems like a win win for all users. Easier to find photos and the ability for visually impaired users to get context on what their friends are sharing
