Re:Ads in Gmail displayed as normal emails? on Friday July 19, 2013 @05:58AM (#6069195)
i have been waiting for this on youtube for years- i do not want to see the same video pre-roll i have already clicked skip on 30 or 40 times.

Being a technology company who are seen as leaders in personalised adverts you think they would over come this terrible user experience

Re:London Hacker News February Meetup on Thursday February 14, 2013 @08:23AM (#5219295)
with so many startups and hackers in the room-

Setting aside 10 slots of 30 seconds (or min) each to pitch to the room on what they are working on may help people connect and find like minded people? kind of like show and tell..

Re:Put Alan Turing on the next £10 note on Friday October 26, 2012 @11:46AM (#4702691)
it would be quite ironic to put george orwell on a currency note
Re:Ask HN: How does an experienced freelancer get work? on Friday September 28, 2012 @11:27AM (#4586002)
As a web developer php type guy..

Things i have done to get work-

Network- attend tech conferences and talk to people

Blog about your area of interest

I ran google adwords on specific key terms, this helped to get a decent bulk of work with a 20x ROI

Over time your network will build up.

Re:Benefits of basing your startup in Scotland on Wednesday September 05, 2012 @07:01AM (#4478806)
Edinburgh is the place to be, although i live northern ireland- having been over for the recent fringe and talked to some imigrant workers, they couldnt be happier.

A nice apartment would run you about £550/$800 a month which is a tad dear but its a great city with so much going on.

A walk around the museum will show you a place that was built on inventions and innovation.

only downside is the scottish climate

Re:I Won't Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar on Friday July 20, 2012 @09:11AM (#4270541)

blogs.hbr.org/cs/2012/07/i_wont_hire_people_who_use_poo.html

One of the real impacts of this was holiday makers abroad as reported by the bbc

I have been using hsbc for business banking and haven't had a complaint.

You just need to warn them when you travel or they will block your card.

Re:Bringing Like to Mobile on Wednesday June 20, 2012 @05:58PM (#4139331)

Re:OSX For Hackers on Saturday March 31, 2012 @07:01AM (#3780043)
my biggest gripe with mac os having recently moved from windows is hitting the maximise button on finder and it barely filling half the screen.

other well documented one is the ability to turn the laptop screen of when using another screen but still the laptop keyboard

Re:Rich Dad Poor Dad... Worst Personal Finance Book of All Time? on Wednesday February 08, 2012 @01:00PM (#3567617)

Re:Official PHP site will have a new design on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @10:20AM (#3480067)
I think some of the docs should be better structured in terms of seo as some of the deprecated functions index higher in google than the currently supported classes/methods

that's my only gripe

Re:Wordpress Blacked Out on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @04:33AM (#3478797)
in theory great- but looks like this page would convert better
I work remote as a developer- mainly doing web based stuff

Advantages- .No IT jobs locally that i like to work for (mainly high stress financial based IT jobs) .Choose where I work from- I could work from home but I rent a desk in a communal office to be around other developers/entrepreneurs .communication is cheap- use skype .if this contract doesnt work out i feel i could move on to something easier rather than being a full time employee in an office .Never met my boss :)

Disadvantages .Spec gets lost- without proper procedures i find myself sitting doing nothing as boss is nowhere to be seen .you cant nag someone when ya see them. i.e. if your waiting on an email you cant shout across the room at them - you have to lift the phone or get them on skype.

overall i enjoy the experience and some of my main issues are more internal issues- but remote working is made so easy now with the likes of gmail, pivotaltracker, skype, dropbox and google docs

edit- some of the other comments say it can be quite lonely- i work in a communal office and i go to the gym every night after office hours just to get out of the office or away from home

Re:Avoid Apress on Sunday January 01, 2012 @09:31AM (#3413081)
i was asked to be a technical reviewer on a book with apress, i felt really good about reviewing and agreed.

When i received the first few chapters i realized the book would have to be re-written. The English was bad and the code was mediocre.

Since it wasn't a paid gig i felt insulted with the experience, the book would require days if not weeks of work to complete rather than a few hours which i had thought.

Re:Ask HN: Your code editor, black on white or white on black? on Tuesday December 20, 2011 @08:47AM (#3373390)
helps if you have to drive home from the office after 12 hours, colleagues complained not being able to see other cars clearly
