Re:My First 10 Minutes on a Server

If a server can push backups, it must necessarily have credentials for and write access to that backup repository. If the server is compromised, that write access could be used to attack the backup repository as well. Pulling backups from a server removes the need for credentials or access to the backup repository.

popsci.com seems to be redirecting for Australian-based IP addresses. Fails for me in Sydney, but works from my US-based VPS. This is the image: http://i41.tinypic.com/zx05kw.jpg and the Wayback Machine has the article: http://web.archive.org/web/20101231014805/http://www.popsci....

I just went through this in January, and while I wouldn't say there are substantial obstacles for non-citizens, you need to make sure that you have enough documentation. The rental vacancy rate is pretty low in Sydney, so there's a fair amount of competition for the better places (as mentioned above). Not having the right paperwork can definitely lower your chances of getting a place. I wrote about our experience here and would be happy to share more: http://www.lifewithkandr.com/2011/05/first-hand-guide-rentin...
Re:Poll: What web server do you use?

For my Ajax apps I run nginx and Apache simultaneously. I don't like giving up Apache's module-based performance advantages for the application layer, but its memory usage is too high for my VPS if I want to use KeepAlive. I use nginx as the front-line web server and configure it to serve pre-gzipped static content and maintain KeepAlive connections. It then proxies dynamic requests to the Apache server. All makes for a nice low memory footprint :)

So do creative professionals have a process similar to an RFP? I'd like to see a few options before I select a designer and pay for a full design...
