Re:TCP Use-After-Free: CVE-2026-98432 / CVSS 9.8 on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:11AM (#50325877)
Because upstream is public. Once the patch hit the repos, people would know why and it’s now in the open.

I assume RH and others probably knew at the same time as Linux. I’d lay more blame with them on the lack of movement.

Yes. I doubt they’d be able to patent those discoveries without serious litigation from the healthcare sector. The models are all “polluted” with others’ IP.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:33AM (#50243412)
The thing the surprises me is that from a legal perspective, (NAL) it sounds like it makes sense not to host the LLMs. Merely to license them to others. Then it becomes a dual use tool like any other and their culpability drops.

For example, the huggingface hack is absolutely OpenAIs responsibility and they should be sued to the hilt. But if someone else uses a self or third party hosted anthropic model, they can escape liability (mostly?)

Same as with the argument over trucks, knives, and any other dual use item is used as weapons. you don’t blame the manufacturer.

(I am merely pontificating here. The law and precedent is nowhere near caught up on this)

Re:Can we replace a $150k Looker with a bucket of HTML files? on Saturday October 24, 2026 @01:40PM (#50223416)
You are making an argument (that I can faintly see the outlines of) but eliding over the meat of it. I think you need to define “hairy internal situations.”
It’s their stock ticker.

Re:Anthropic assigned highest junk credit rating in June on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:10PM (#50123896)
It’s a fair point. It’s certainly not good but that doesnt = bad. It could be an artifact of FT deciding to report on a nothingburger.

I’d reserve judgement until i see them report more detailed financials and the big ratings agencies step in with assessment.

Re:Anthropic assigned highest junk credit rating in June on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:04PM (#50122947)
This is not particularly newsworthy. Kroll is not one of the main ratings agencies, and certainly not the one bond purchasers use.
Forget the IRS. America can balance its budget going after and fining these illegal trades and traders. MAGA!

(edit: /s but not about making the government some money off this corruption)

Re:NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:14AM (#50054664)
Parking enforcement in NYC is currently also handled by the sanitation department. They can and do ticket cars blocking street cleaning operations, which parked personally-owned vehicles of cops do interfere with.
It’s not the water. It’s the electric usage, air and noise pollution from sanctioned (and often unsanctioned) diesel generators.

The concern is real and very much deserves the opprobrium voters are showing.

Yup. From Fairfax. Very much what you said.
SCOTUS seems to believe so.
Yeah if I remember it was Iranian tomahawks that caused it.

(Edit: I am merely relaying what they said, not that I in anyway subscribe to it)

Re:Nvidia is the central bank of AI on Saturday September 12, 2026 @01:10PM (#49674560)
They aren’t; the parent comment is incorrect. It’s safer to say Nvidia is encouraging the money that already exists to be deployed on AI buildouts.

But everyone is now chasing the same opportunity (AI and its dependencies like hardware and power) that will drive prices higher in those sectors until supply responds (or demand disappears).

Re:Nvidia is the central bank of AI on Saturday September 12, 2026 @12:56PM (#49674394)
“as long as it’s cash flow continues” is doing a lot of optimistic heavy lifting. The whole premise of the circular financing worry is that Nvidia sits in the middle of all the guarantees made to companies like OpenAI. If any of those companies become insolvent, Nvidia is on the hook for it.

Also Nvidia isn’t really creating money. The 500B number is third party capital that already exists (BX, Apollo, etc).

Re:How Poor People Buy Cars on Saturday September 12, 2026 @10:40AM (#49672800)
No such thing as wrong year nor wrong model, or even wrong brand as long as it works!

Or even make! Many manufacturers use the same supplier for various parts. The lock actuator on my 2010 dodge pickup is also used in Fords.

Re:RTK reports token savings, but our cost benchmarks disagree on Saturday September 12, 2026 @10:31AM (#49672703)
This is the way. Take it with a grain of salt (as the author mentions) but we have gotten much better results and less token usage after we hooked up our codebase to an indexing service’s MCP (in our case sourcegraph). But any indexing service will do.
Re:Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Big Box of Cables on Friday September 11, 2026 @10:04PM (#49667937)
DO NOT DO THIS. It is 2026, just buy a 6 or 7 A/micro/mini adapters and just keep a handful of usb-c cables. It takes up less space and is easier to organize. And your cables are now mostly up-to-date and useful PD carriers.
Re:Silicon Valley Is Transforming the Military-Industrial Complex on Thursday September 10, 2026 @10:36PM (#49652899)
Economic embargoes are the least of Putin’s worries if he nukes a country.

More than likely Russia is ostracized to the point that other countries will treat it with active hostility.

And the most likely possibility is Putin is assassinated and the government overthrown due to internal opposition.

The same thing that would happen to America if Trump acts on his musings about tactically nuking Iran.

Using a large database of (deidentified) medical records, the researchers compared the outcomes of people taking a GLP-1 for their type 2 diabetes to people taking other common diabetes drugs between 2017 and 2025. GLP-1 users were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with TB for up to a five-year span, they found.

Both of these studies are observational and retrospective, meaning they can only show a correlation between GLP-1 use and reduced (or at least less severe) infections, not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. At the same time, these are the only latest pieces of evidence pointing to a genuine germ-busting benefit from GLP-1 drugs.

I wonder if the likelihood that people taking a GLP-1 are probably better off financially, have a health care provider willing to spend on the drugs (and therefore probably a better medical system) or a combination of these and other traits are the real reason there are fewer infections.

Re:Virginia Community Voids a $100B Data Center Project on Thursday September 03, 2026 @06:36PM (#49558080)
I work in tech (like most of us on this website). But I’m originally from Northern VA. If you travel down Route 7, Route 50 or any of the numerous Parkways in the area you will see mile after mile of double height buildings just blighting what was otherwise a fairly bucolic area of the Appalachian foothills.
Re:New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @10:58AM (#49435329)
I had the same view recently. For the past year I’ve been using my iPad to remote into both my MacBook Pro M1 Max and my racked Linux workstation at home using Jump and moonlight/sunshine, respectively. Never looked back
I’m even more confused by the economics of the frontier model businesses. Even if they got preferential prices, they are still paying an inordinate amount for their infrastructure.

If it wasn’t economically feasible without VC/Nvidia money 3 years ago, how is it possibly economically feasible now at 10x prices for things like memory?

That’s the correct usage. Revenue includes gains and losses. Profit will take that number and subtract out the operational costs (salaries, market data subs, etc).
No net revenue is still the top line number (just minus some things like allowances or some other artifact or exception). Profit is the bottom line.
That merely pushes the valuation onto the hardware makers, not the companies that have the temporary preferential access to their hardware.

It can be the case that everyone in “a fight” is wrong.
