News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

To get a sneak peak you could read Antiqua et nova from January last year. It focuses on the anthropology and also what sets human intelligence apart from simulated intelligence.

Someone on HN wondered if that text could be the Magna Charta for the AI age.

Re:Understanding Traceroute on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @06:02PM (#47696846)
Once upon a time (early 90s) I read a very funny story on traceroute featuring parrots, one named Polly, and shotguns. But I can’t find it. It might have been in a Usenet group. I would love to find it again.

Re:How I write software with LLMs on Monday March 16, 2026 @06:57AM (#47397402)
In your example the one making the food is you. You would have to introduce a cooking robot for the analogy to match agentic coding.
Yes. Ten years ago I would say there was a consensus in the ML community that if we got really powerful AI, it should be kept isolated in controlled environments (no internet, no way to execute code) until it could be trusted/verified. Fast forward: openclaw. People don’t seem to care, why should the labs?
Re:German government comes out against Chat Control on Tuesday October 07, 2025 @02:41PM (#45507026)
”Follow the money”. Yes, let’s decide that no bank is to have anything to do with crypto from next year. And not do business with other banks that accepts crypto. That would help stop fraud much more effective than Chat Control.
Re:What If A.I. Doesn't Get Better Than This? on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @10:28AM (#44888910)
OTOH: First flight: 1903. Moon landing: 1969. Humanity went from ”Look, we’re 3 meters off the ground!” to “We just parked on the Moon” in barely a lifetime. 66 years.
Re:WP Engine Must Win on Thursday September 26, 2024 @06:16AM (#41656612)
Both are in the wrong. WP Engine are morally wrong not to pay back with developer time or money to enhance the Open Source project they are making money with. But Automattic's claim that "Managed WordPress" and in extension "WordPress Plugin" and "WordPress Agency" should be covered by their trademark is crazy.

Ask HN: What data is Facebook sending from my phone?

I looked at some statistics in my router and saw that Facebook (the mobile app) is the biggest sender of data from my network. It's more than my online backup provider gets! What data is the app sending that can amount to many, many gigabytes? Has anyone tried to decipher the packages to find out what it contains?

Re:Red Hat Now Limiting RHEL Sources to CentOS Stream on Thursday June 22, 2023 @06:59AM (#36430312)
But Oracle, like Rocky Linux, won't get the source packages from Redhat anymore.
From my European viewpoint US seems to have a thriving civil society.

Sweden used to have that. Workers movement, free churches and the temperance movement basically built the Swedish democracy. A large percent of the population were contributing members in them. They are almost extinct now.

The welfare state took their place. If something is not commercially viable in Sweden, it has to be funded by tax payers. And then you get all the issues of what should be funded and what shouldn't.

We no longer have strong, self-supporting associations. And we don't have the philanthropic tradition where rich people fund things.

My wife and her friends are all middle-class, doctors, lawyers etc. The have a book club and get tax money to buy theater tickets and cheese for their meetings. It's not tax money well spent in my book. They would have had the book club anyway. And all of them can easily pay for cheese themselves.

There are endless examples of fraud too. You just write down a meeting schedule and put in names of people and get money.

Another problem is the Islamistic "studieförbund" Ibn Rush who is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. They get a lot of tax money to promote their worldview.

He looked like he was right out of bed. But it was mostly a feeling. I had recently hired a high school dropout and an immigrant who barely spoke our language. Both turned out great. Did not have the warning sounds go off during their interviews.

That period was strange. I got applicants with Microsoft certification in SQL Server who couldn’t explain the simplest SQL query.

JetBrains where silent when the war started. I was a bit worried what would happen. Then they announced the closing of the dev offices in Russia. They said that they needed to extract some people before announcing. It’s not an easy task relocating hundreds of people.
I didn't trust my instinct and hired a guy that was a pathological liar. Almost ruined the whole company. This was during the dotcom bubble and programmers where hard to come by. My company didn't pay as well as the (soon to be bankrupt) flashy dotcom firms. I really needed people and I let myself think "OK, he is odd, but maybe it's just my bias".

His office soon turned into a dump, he didn't show up to important customer demos ("Oh, I told you I was going to visit my sister", "I got a bad allergy after vaccination, I'm in the hospital."). He could spend weeks not producing anything, and have very elaborate excuses. Some periods in the beginning he did really good work. So I had to weigh the pros and the cons of keeping him. And maybe I wanted to avoid a conflict. I was young and had never met a person that could lie and cheat without feeling bad.

The worst was that he blamed his co-workers for everything. People wanted to leave. And I, as the middle manager, was caught between caring for the team, getting the work done and be accountable for the managers above me.

I should have ended his employment after a week. There where enough bad signs.

One day he just disappeared. We were worried and went to his house. It was empty. Never heard from him again. After a month his office phone rang. It was his mother. I had to tell her that he was missing. "Oh, not again", was her reply.

When recruiting, listen to your instincts. And be proactive when a team member is not functioning. One person could ruin a team.

Well, if the business owner himself engage in world politics it is relevant to follow the money trail. Musk is not any businessman. His influence goes far.
Explains a lot on the recent Musk dealings with Putin. Follow the money.

"Even the FBI/NSA has them monitoring the files on your device."

Source?

Seldom heard on a deathbed: "I wish I spent less time with my kids when they were young".
Re:TinyPilot: Build a KVM over IP for Under $100 on Tuesday May 31, 2022 @04:16AM (#31567191)
I tried this with a few HP desktops I was going to use as a homelab, but I found it flaky. I used MeshCommander but I never got a stable workflow. I wanted to be able to reinstall with PXE. Somehow the vPro failed to connect when booting into BIOS.
Re:Ghost 5.0 on Tuesday May 24, 2022 @06:50AM (#31490360)
I am a Ghost user and there's a lot to like about it. One omission that I find strange is the lack of support for i18n. Both the payment flow (Portal), e-mail newsletters and transactional emails going out to subscribers have hard-coded English strings and you need to maintain a fork to translate it. Just seem strange to me in 2022.
I'm principally for allowing side-loading, but in this era of surveillance capitalism it might be a net negative for non-tech savvy iOS users. Facebook will leave the Appstore to circumvent Apple's privacy policies. God knows what they will do to users installing Facebook or Instagram.
I'm sure Wikileaks started out with a genuine idealistic vision. But I think it's hard to deny that after a while it turned into a FSB puppet."Spy Files Russia" looks more like a planted leak to divert accusations. If I remember correctly all of the information was already out before the leak.
This is such a false analogy. I heard hundreds of dissenting voices on the streets and in the media all over the world (and in the US) during the Iraqi war, the attack on Serbia, the attack on Libya.

Performance per watt is also a good indicator of noise levels.
Russia constantly provoke Swedish defense. Submarines, espionage, encroach on Swedish airspace with bombers.
I wonder how companies like Jetbrains will function. HQ in Czech Republic but majority of developers in Russia, I believe. Might be hard to pay developers without SWIFT access.
Re:If you’re so smart, why aren’t you happy? on Monday February 14, 2022 @07:54AM (#30331428)
Not the person you replied to but here is me: Divorced parents (father secretly had another family), abusive, alcoholic stepfather. Rape and murder in immediate family. Poverty. I suffered mental illness and depression for years. Therapy and medication.

Now I am happy. Have been for ten years. I have a small house. Nothing fancy but it's tidy and looked after. Wife and kids. Kids get a whole other childhood than I had. It's like a restoration. Rebuilding of what I never had. Deeply meaningful. I think feeling a purpose and meaning are key

Faith is also an important component in my life.
