Most properties are bought cash. That's dollar bills, no bank transfer, no pesos.

Zero interest is a lie. The interest is already on the price

Except nobody questions when people at the office "steal" time ot the coffee machine, talking about sports, talking on the phone or just wandering around thinking about something. At home it seema like we are bolted to the chairs

Leatherman tools 5 meters of Spectra rope I've owned for 20 years and use for everything Thinkpad X220 Shimano bicycle drivetrains

I'm replacing my 10yo Thinkpad camera thia week. Guess what will be my next laptop? Wish phones were like that

X220 owner here. Do all modern laptops (even thinkpads) have those crappy keyboards? Need to upgrade soon, or maybe I'll RDP to a bigger system

Paywalled? How would you use it?

Let's say 200k in the US vs 100k Euro in Portugal. What's the best offer taking into account cost of living, purchase power, etc? Numbeo.com seems like an aoproximation. Using the same position in a FAANG and checking levels.io for salaries info on both locations could be another. Salary/Average Income ?

Google Earth traces back to the Mars demo? That was amazing when I was a kid

I found the references to 90's tech fun (like Chaos Computer Club).

Yes. And it was discussed on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7301630

I know. I just wanted to emphasize on Zoom being the only thing that makes an otherwise perfect computer not powerful enough (for me of course).

X220 is my primary computer. It never uses more than 4 of the 16GB RAM. I ran the fan almost all the time at full speed tough. The killer app (in a bad sense) is Zoom. It kills the CPU and can't handle virtual backgrounds.

I played rugby and there is no way I'll let my children play. Spinal injuries from scrum collapses are way too common, and there is a view of scrum being a fundamental part of the sport so they only mitigate it by not pushing in scrum until a certain age, doing 3 against 3 scrums and so on. By the time the boys are 15 they like the game and start playing hard and getting hurt. I'd rather have them row, run, play soccer, surf, and so many other options

Yes

High inflation question:

Given 40% inflation. An item is offered for $1200 in 12 "zero interest" payments of $100 or $800 in cash.

How do you compare their real cost taking into account inflation?

AWS Casio as a service.

I thought this was about adding a digital signature with an x509 certificate, which has been a PITA for ages because of the PDF standard, plus browsers isolation from certificate stores, let alone hardware devices.

It also launched many information security careers :)

This is a new private satellite from Satellogic. I guess the best spy images this days are obtained with droned but that's a whole different budget

Dynamite. Lots of it. Or a nuke.

I remember creating a web query form for an employee search or something like that using CA Clipper and reading stdin an spitting our HTML on stdout. Worked like a charm, was fast and made that data available to whoever needed it.

Do USA schools teach that America is one continent divided in north, central and south America? Or is it America=USA ? I'm from South America and we learn it's one continent

last time it was: install tcpdump on java server doing nasty things. save pcap. Analyze with Wireshark, find out the JAVA app was doing insane things against the Oracle DB even after vendo said they had "optimized" database access. Th good thing is the same technique applies to REST apis, sockets, load balancer problems, other databases. You probably can do a better job using each specific stack debug facilities, but a .pcap and wireshark is the swiss army of debugging.

Also: strace for reading what anything in Linux is trying to do when failing.

Wireshark. I've saved countless enterprise problems that nobody could debug by intercepting traffic and guessing, or looking at the raw data nobody knew was there.

Python list comprehensions + ipython: it changed how I approach all compley python code. I iterate over the data until I get it right, then use that as the basis of the program/script.
