Costa Rica does not have a military (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Force_of_Costa_Rica) and yet there are still assets.

Just do a 10% flat federal sales tax + negative income tax if below a certain threshold.

But this is way too logical for the main political parties to implement.

Re:FCC cancels Starlink’s and LTD's rural development grants on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @06:46PM (#32419397)
Compared to 1.5/0.5 DSL its great, it's getting 60/11 about 40mi away from SpaceX (Starlink) HQ. But compared to municipal bidirectional gigabit fiber it's...not as great.

Heres ping info from starlink:

--- google.com ping statistics --- 38 packets transmitted, 38 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 26.879/45.073/95.627/11.582 ms

I was in the same situation, except she wanted kids and I do not. So I broke up with her.
Have you looked at the Canadian express entry program? You would be making less $ that you can make in the USA but it is easier to deal with immigration, and that is still much, much more than $350/mo. Could probably work remotely for a company in the USA after that.

There are plenty of companies that like using their same old .NET or Java, you don't need newest JS...

Re:Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @11:33PM (#31430373)
Is there an easy way to deal with this e.g. compliance as a service?

Sounds like a nightmare to deal with, of course this is only assuming it is enforced. If it is not well who cares, companies like Lyft/Uber view laws as a starting point in negotiations when expanding into new areas not as a brick wall of dogma.

That is the point of the tax code, to be able to use it for political wielding of power e.g. the Chicken tax because LBJ was pissed at Europe that caused a 25% tariff on light trucks imported to the U.S. based on a retaliation for European tariffs on American chicken..
Re:Ask HN: How many computers you got? on Tuesday May 10, 2022 @08:54PM (#31334600)
-M1 MacBook Air connected to a 32”4k monitor + external kb/mouse

-iPhone 13 pro

That’s literally it at home. Have an old dell t3500 at work with a newer gpu and ssd to get work done including stats and embedded dev, but that’s it.

Minimalism is where it’s at.

I wonder if this would work in small claim court in the USA? Just make a form letter lol.

Why can't he take out a loan against those shares?
Is the obesity rates in the United Sates also a “propagandistic construct”?

This is TMI due to the max, but it illustrates and I’m describing, it’s cost a good amount in opportunity cost too but whatever.

So I had IBS aka colon spasms to a debilitating degree and went to a couple highly-regarded doctors via my insurance including Kaiser and Blue cross in Seattle, but they said I was ok, and didn’t even do a referral to a gastroenterologist and just did blood panels. This destroyed my life and my relationship with my gf for a couple years and who I thought I was going to propose to, then it just mostly stopped.

I’ll have the odd spasm now and again but nothing like it was from 2017-2021. Now I’m in the other side of the country and it doesn’t bother me like wtf it just went away.

I’ve been screened for crohn's disease and ulcritive colitis and nothing came up. Sometimes our bodies are..strange.

I’m doing a PhD in biology right now at a large university in the southern United States, interested in biogerontology.

My plan is to bring to market therapies for age-related disease, probably a crosslink breaker for skin. We’ll see if it happens...

I disagree. Move the capitol to the center of the country, put a lifetime ban on former elected officials lobbying, and that would get rid of a lot of corruption.
Doesn’t matter. We should care more about people who are dying on the street (I have seen this firsthand), have seen this myself in Seattle and SF, and giving everyone healthcare before giving Ukraine or any other country aid.

This is something that both Democrats and Republicans seem to ignore because they want to pursue their own self-interested agendas.

Re:Why I got a PhD at age 61 on Sunday April 03, 2022 @11:39AM (#30897731)
I got into a PhD program with a BA (USA) and 5 years of industry experience, but a masters wouldn’t hurt.
Re:Ask HN: Which VPN provider should one use from Russia? on Sunday March 13, 2022 @04:46PM (#30665527)
What about free VPN like cloudflare warp?
Can you purchase Monero off of RU bitcoin exchanges with an internal RU credit card? That would be one way to liberate assets from the ruble if you're trying to get out.
Just doing one thing at once, close all your tabs, facebook, and any other time-wasters. Then I set a pomodoro timer for 60min and work until it's done. Currently using Befocused Pro. That is the best way to focus on something that you are procrastinating on.
Hah, now I want one. Have you had any problems with burnin? Looks like something like this is 8k & still in stock https://www.bestbuy.com/site/reviews/samsung-55-class-q900-s....
Which Model TV are you using? All I could find on bestbuy was a $1600 8k tv.
Re:Ask HN: What are idling first-time home buyers doing? on Monday January 31, 2022 @03:26PM (#30153782)
What other kind of investment apart from housing can one take out >=5x leverage on an investment and have the interest tax-subsidized?

Housing is a big racket in the United States, and everyone is too afraid to say anything becuse they just spent the better part of a million dollars on a condo https://www.redfin.com/WA/Seattle/3610-1st-Ave-NW-98107/unit...

But if you make $300/yr and don't have kids or too many expenses thats like 5 years to pay off, so not too bad then? Not totally sustainable for the rest of the country and/or poor people though.

If you sign up for the EdX Precalc class https://learning.edx.org/course/course-v1:ASUx+MAT170x+2T201... they will let you use ALEKS for free.
