Re:How Washington Really Redistributes Income on Sunday October 20, 2013 @10:55PM (#6582978)
> Don't glorify urban living to a fault, blowing money at bars for binge drinking well after college, spending too much on rent to be in a "trendy" area. You shouldn't have an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook and spend $1500/mo to live with 4 roommates, latte for breakfast ($4), buy all your lunches ($10), get dinner at the Whole Foods hot bar ($15) when you make $40k, then complain when you're 30 with a negative net worth!

No one making $40k a year is spending $1500 on rent. This is such a yuppie NYC/SF perspective. Try sitting in actual $40k shoes for a second.

Re:How Washington Really Redistributes Income on Sunday October 20, 2013 @10:52PM (#6582966)
Plain truth shouldn't be interpreted as smug.
(Chuckle) Well seeing as how half the tech managers I talk to at private companies haven't ever heard of it, I think he should be given a little bit of a break.
Re:How to Go From Google Engineer to First-Time CTO on Sunday September 08, 2013 @09:49PM (#6351402)
Yes, but how did you become CTO. I'd like to hear that. It's all well and good once you're there.
Re:Frayed Prospects, Despite a Degree on Saturday July 20, 2013 @03:54PM (#6076318)
Don't you know that on Hacker News the answer to every social problem is either make everyone code up a massively-successful website or become an engineer in the bay area?
That is absolutely innapropriate for HN. You should have at the very least offered to have Elon's babies as well.
Re:My name is cleared on Wednesday July 03, 2013 @08:48PM (#5988523)
Sounds like Google noticing people actually read your blog and now playing a game of CYA (cover your ass).

Some tech managers can be horrible people though, because some of them, (definitely not all, or even most) take their promotion to mean they're the next coming of Steve Jobs/Mark Zuckerberg and are now allowed to step all over, manipulate, and lie to whoever works under them to get ahead.

I've worked for guys like this and management turns a blind eye to it because they too start to buy into that manager's fantasy.

Good on you for both pointing this bad guy out and getting a public apology from the company Michael.

Re:OOP Isn't a Fundamental Particle of Computing on Tuesday November 13, 2012 @11:06PM (#4781965)
Take it down a notch. This is a blog post about modern programming, not a tech interview.
Race relations are progressing but by no means fixed, but I'm sure you'd get quite the surprised reaction if you went back and told people the president was black.
This was the narrative toed by the Bush administration and Fox News, but many Americans and the international community by and large did not agree.
Re:The Latest On Intelligence on Tuesday July 17, 2012 @11:58PM (#4259272)
Your first point would only elucidate a common misconception that IQ tests adequately measure intelligence. As to your second point, what studies are these? (I'd actually be interested)
Re:In Treatment for Leukemia, Glimpses of the Future on Monday July 09, 2012 @02:10PM (#4219494)
Yea what more proof do you need that insurers will screw anyone out of money than an expert in his disease's field being denied a promising attempt to save his own life.
This is my new favorite site. Thank you.
The lady doth protests too much, methinks.
Re:Machine Learning using Quantum Algorithms on Saturday November 26, 2011 @12:54PM (#3280270)
You know, it's funny how ridiculous D-wave sounded when they insinuated they were scaling qubits about as fast as Moore's law, but here they are in 2011 with a 512 qubit chip that clearly works. That's nuts.

It's hard to believe our technology has advanced this far so fast.

Combined with technologies like IBM Watson, at this rate in 10 years we'll have no idea what the fuck our computers are even doing anymore.

Re:Khan Academy exercise framework on Saturday July 23, 2011 @04:21PM (#2797711)
Oh man, I have so many ideas for this framework, but not enough time to code it up :). Maybe one of these days. Thanks for putting this up!
Re:Everyone sucks at interviewing. Everyone. on Monday May 16, 2011 @02:20PM (#2553566)
After interviewing for months I basically memorized the answers to the main kinds of technical questions. After I started to hear the same sorts of questions asked over and over, I knew the process was completely broken and I would never ask stupid technical riddle questions to gauge someone's competence on the job.

I think a brief conversation about software development and a longer conversation to determine how smart the guy is is what matters. Even someone who barely knows how to code can learn on the fly if he's smart/competent enough.

Re:Telescopictext on Monday May 16, 2011 @04:05AM (#2551956)
As someone in NLP I think I just came up with an idea about how it would be useful, but I won't say :D
Pretty cool, but you should put popular topics on the first page. Searching is not as interesting as browsing.

The site's not showing up...
Re:YouTube Videos in 3D - Just add glasses on Tuesday May 10, 2011 @09:20PM (#2534738)
What's funny is the entire web will be 3D in 5-10 years.
Re:Infiltrating Any Startup on Tuesday May 10, 2011 @09:16PM (#2534724)
What horrible advice. Yes, stalk the founders to get a job.
