Re:How do I gauge interest in my startup concept? on Saturday August 17, 2013 @06:09AM (#6228674)
Find some customers before building the product. Make sure you build what they think they need.. not what you think they need.

IPage deleted all my content, settings, emails, data - EVERYTHING

iPage.com is the worst web hosting service. I had an account with them where I hosted all my a lot of stuff - my blogs, websites of my company and my friends' companies - mostly wordpress sites. Their renewal date was 20th March 2013. However, on 19th March, they arbitrarily DELETED ALL MY STUFF - WEBSITES, DATABASES, EMAILS, DOMAIN SETTINGS - EVERYTHING. Ask HN: Should startup entrepreneurs read tech blogs/news regularly?

Hi Guys/Gals, I wonder what you all think about it: Should startup entrepreneurs spend time reading tech blogs/news regularly? Mostly these are one/two people with a lot to do. But we find read stuff like HackerNews and TechCrunch because it is "work". On one hand, often better ideas emerge out of reading these blogs since we get to know of new technologies and trends. But this can also be...

Re:Ask HN: Ruby/Rails or Groovy/Grails? on Monday April 30, 2012 @09:37AM (#3909163)
Sorry, by "resources", I meant "experienced ROR developers" and thats a statement specific to my city- Kolkata, India. Wish I was in Chicago or San Francisco. :) Indeed, online help is available, but its time consuming if the developer doesnt have sufficient experience. All large tech companies in India have Java practice, so Java developers are in abundance, and usually have better coding habits too. This may not be true in some other places.

Ask HN: Ruby/Rails or Groovy/Grails?

Hey Guys, We are building a web app from ground up. We are using Neo4j for data management. Should we go with Ruby on Rails or Grails? ROR resources are far and few. But Java people are in abundance here. Im hoping they will be able to quickly pick up Groovy/Grails too. Also, we will be building many web apps in future too. So from that perspective, which tech stack do you think makes more...

Web patents - what can be patented?

Hi, The stories about web patents seem so bizarre. Like Yahoo claiming to own patent on showing ads based on some metrics. I wonder what all can and can not be patented. As in, how come Friendster or MySpace could not get online social network patented or how come Amazon could not get online book store patented? Basically what I want to understand is - what are the features of a product for it...

Does OKCupid have a patent on its matching algorithm?

Hey Guys, do you know if OK cupid has a patent on its matching algorithm. I know google says they have some patent pending. But if we change the set of questions, can we use their process of "whats your answer, which answers are you ok with and how important is it for you" process? - without infringing on any patent.

Whats the new Tech Crunch?

I used to be an avid Tech Crunch reader. The site show cased interesting startups. But now I dont find it interesting anymore. The editorial quality has gone down. The article selection has also changed. So, what are some sites that cover good web/mobile startups nicely?

Re:How should we promote it? on Wednesday April 11, 2012 @02:24AM (#3826232)
I think FB Advertizing was awesome. It is expensive for USA/Europe but you can target Asia for less than 10 cents/click. We were converting close to 30%. So it wasnt bad at all. But the problem with Mingle Trips is that it is not viral. so I could only get people as long as I paid for it. That was not a great model for a bootstrapped startup. Also, it works much better than listing on Craigs List since you get much fewer perverts. From CL, etc, we were regularly getting prostitutes and guys who only wanted to get laid and were pretty crude. This may not be the general trend. It is only my limited experience.
Re:How should we promote it? on Tuesday April 10, 2012 @02:12AM (#3820958)
I did some basic FB Advertizing and also reached out to bloggers - some of whom have written about us. I also spammed some travel sites a bit :D and posted on CL and various free online classifieds.

Re:How should we promote it? on Tuesday April 10, 2012 @02:10AM (#3820952)
Thats right. I do have more enthusiasm than money :) Thanks. I have reached out to bloggers on Linked in and gotten them to check out the site and recommend to their readers. I also contacted hostels in Europe but they didnt seem much interested so far. I will send many more mails now and see what converts. Thanks

Thanks.

How should we promote it?

Ask HN: Why PHP over Java?

Hi, Why are most Webapps developed in PHP while enterprise apps use Java? I am asking this because I want to build a team for our next web app. We were recruiting PHP guys but I realize that most PHP guys have only done work on customizing OSCommerce, Wordpress, Drupal or Joomla, etc.. no hard core programming. Java people seem to be more "hard core" programmers. Can you tell me why I shouldnt...

Re:Whats the best host for PHP - Facebook App? on Sunday February 05, 2012 @03:03PM (#3555046)
Thanks Gee. We are currently on Linode. But now Im experimenting with PHPFog. Looks good so far.

Whats the best host for PHP - Facebook App?

Hi, We are using PHP with Yii Framework. Currently we are using MySQL but will also use a NoSQL database in the next application. For Facebook app, we need an SSL too. We have no experience in UNIX and System administration - dont want to take on much management work either. Can you suggest a good hosting service at cheap to test our app prototypes? Thanks.

Ask HN: Can you recommend a source for free pics?

Hi, I blog as a hobby and also work on testing some startup ideas very often. I dont want to pay for images for my pages and at the same time, wish I didnt have to use stolen images. Can you guys recommend good sources for photographs and illustrations? I tried Foter.com but their search engine sucks.
