News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

mads

I was there at the time and until the end.

That cartoon meme with the dog sitting with a cup of coffee or whatever and telling himself "This is fine", while everything is on fire, is probably the best way to describe how things felt at nokia back then.

Re:US-owned Greenland and Gulf of America? What a weird week on Tuesday January 14, 2025 @07:49AM (#42696572)
There is even conversation going on about Svalbard on Twitter. I think a lot of people just realized hos close that is to Greenland and then if Greenland then why not Svalbard.

This cant really be a surprise, can it?
Re:Ask HN: What is Elon Musk's world view? on Wednesday January 08, 2025 @06:40AM (#42633172)
The man is a drug addict, so I dont think you can expect much coherence there. Clearly demonstrated also by that guy also who analyzed his tweets, who could even extract data like the downward tolerance spiral musk was in.
Thats like threatening to use military force in the great bakeoff.
That convicted drug dealer or smuggler Greenland guy with the maga cap in the video he shared encapsulates this very well.
Re:"AI" on a Calculator: Part 1 on Sunday January 05, 2025 @12:35AM (#42599992)
I remember having the 1541 disk drive for my C64 play tunes.
The problem with Musk is that he thinks the whole world needs Trump. When only 10% or whatever in Europe would have voted for Trump, then in Musks pseudo reality this is because people are brainwashed by main stream media, when in fact it is because nobody but America really needs Trump. Whatever it is he is doing with his infantile propaganda is going to backfire epicly.

Oh, America... I heard you wanted to be great again?
That truck always reminds me of that Simpsons episode, where Homer designs a car.

Re:Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU? on Monday December 30, 2024 @02:35AM (#42547352)
So Barcelona homelessness is going up and Los Angeles homelessness is going down? The only reasonable conclusion must be that the homeless are relocating from Los Angeles to Barcelona. It is only a question of time then.

Re:How do computers calculate sine? on Friday March 08, 2024 @12:08AM (#39637980)
Back in the 80's, when I made demos on the C64, we also used pre-calculated sines. I remember going to the library to get a book with the values.
Re:The Curious Case of Hybrids in Watchmaking on Sunday September 03, 2023 @02:02PM (#37372607)
I have one of those Ulysses Nardin phones in a drawer somewhere as I was working on the software part of it back in the days.

The mechanical charging mechanism on the phone was basically a gimmick. You would probably have to shake it around for a few days to get the phone to even start again, if your oligarch plane crashed in the desert and your phone ran out of power.

Re:A Ghost Town of Abandoned Mansions in China on Friday August 18, 2023 @10:02AM (#37175737)
The problem here is that you have provincial level leaders with a 7th grade education who are dictated to up their GDP to a certain number. They know that building something will do the trick and at the same time prop up their personal unofficial finances via bribes and whatnot. So it continues...
Re:Simula the Forgotten Programming Language on Monday July 03, 2023 @06:02AM (#36570864)
Denmark had the mosts c64 groups in the world (the reason for this, I don't know) compared to population size. Most of the people involved with these demo/cracking groups in the 80ies were most likely in their teens. Once the 90ies arrived with the internet, I think it was obvious to most of them what they wanted to do with their life.

Sweden, Norway and Finland came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I think US was at place 20.

Re:The Creative Sweet Spot of Dreaming on Monday February 06, 2023 @08:10AM (#34676781)
I have the same and I quite like it, when it happens. Very rarely am I able to "catch" the dream and somehow become semi conscious inside it in brief flashes. When this happens, I am not exactly able to control anything, but I can sort of observe things with my "normal" state of mind. Its really difficult to explain with words though.

As you also describe, this usually happens, when I am sleep deprived.
