Feynman had read both books. He mentioned the prefatory quote from 'Calculus Made Easy' in an interview given to Omni Magazine in 1979:

"... I had a calculus book once that said, 'What one fool can do, another can'..."

I have this in Chapter 9: 'The Smartest Man in the World' in Feynman's book 'The Pleasure of Finding Things Out'.

What is this? Watch your speech, because Big Sib has installed the Netpolice; that which does not ingratiate itself to the fancies of the power-mongers shall be expunged.

No service provider should bear, or provide any means to further, this idiocy.

Couldn't you have made Perl write the proprietary language programs for you?
Re:Great programming and CS books you've never heard of on Tuesday June 01, 2010 @11:16PM (#1396926)
The 7th, CTM, is a successor to SICP. It is a classic of modern times.

I've heard of the third one, Concrete Mathematics.

I vaguely remember reading of the 4th, HOPL 2, and the 5th, Computer Organisation and Design. As far as I recall, they are good actually.

Agreed with your last point. I have read about people who loved Lisp so much, that they wrote Lisp to write programs in other languages for them. Two cases: * http://www.merl.com/papers/TR93-17/ (Lisp to Pascal) * Erik Naggum told of his dissatisfaction with C++, and wrote Lisp to do his job for him.

Well, the first is more of a demo, actually.

"Both C and Lisp will be available as system programming languages." - From the GNU manifesto

Maybe just implement GCC in Lisp? Or am I just nitpicking?

What if his files end with ".hs"?

Emacs be an organism. It be runnin' all the while. On the other hand, I'll admit to using vi from eshell.

Madness? This is VIM!

Ye can gain mine Emacs when ye wrest it from mine chill, mortified fingers.
Acknowledged and appreciated. Thanks to both posters.
So, ends first, means second?

Ask HN: Recommend first programming language to master (options included)

I have coded a game in Scheme, improved it in Common Lisp, ported it to Emacs Lisp, almost got it working in Perl. I barely know C, have seen Haskell (got swamped by types), understand the essential ideology behind Smalltalk, created two more small games in Forth, and don't like C++, Java, Ruby, and Python for various reasons. I also have added 5 to 10 in 6502 assembly. My problem is that I...

Re:12 Reasons to Learn and Use the vi Editor on Monday March 08, 2010 @04:05PM (#1176429)
The first eleven points are fairly regularly touted as the strong points of vi. I'm specifically interested in the twelfth point that states:

"Writing with vi is as close as you will ever come to writing in your own handwriting and still working on a computer."

Your thoughts?
