Re:Ask HN: Ideas for a small passive income site on Thursday July 31, 2014 @12:17PM (#8114988)
Thanks for the reply. I've visited many of the sites that attempt to provide a fountain of ideas, but never found them to be on point. Seems like a challenging product to make.

I will look into this, thanks for the reply :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll do that.
Re:Show HN: Radio - My first Mac app on Wednesday June 19, 2013 @08:30AM (#5905102)
Bought it, works great :)

Might like to see description listed next to stations in the fav list drop down from menu bar.

(edit: also, sort by description in All Stations list doesn't work: http://cl.ly/image/3l3M030n1D2m)

Re: Is this the worst website ever made? on Saturday December 15, 2012 @06:41PM (#4926719)
While scrolling down the tabled, framed, left side "menu", I had a visceral feeling of reminiscence and nostalgia of roughly 1998, when I started playing with HTML.

Amazing.

Dude! Stop being "that guy"!

Sorry, didn't realize this. Gotta catch up on my HN rss.

Right or wrong, my first reaction was also "heyyy, that's sexist"...

Next is Etsy going to pay guys $5,000 to take knitting classes?

Re:Ask HN: What music do you like to listen to while you program? on Wednesday December 28, 2011 @11:25PM (#3402510)
Soundtracks - mainly instrumental ones.

Trainspotting, Reservoir Dogs, Snatch, Run Lola Run.

They're moving, the backdrops to quickly developed stories, builds momentum :)

Re:Upgrading Dropbox to 16GB for 25USD on Friday November 18, 2011 @09:35PM (#3254384)
It worked!

In two hours, for 6 dollars, I got all the confirmed referrals.

Fun way to learn how to use Adwords.

Dug out an old .edu email account I had also, up to 18 gigs for "free" XD

Re:Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancers? (September 2011) on Thursday September 01, 2011 @11:48AM (#2950471)
SEEKING WORK (Remote or Buenos Aires)

I work with a team of 3 devs and a designer codenotion.com (it's a silly page for now).

We work across the full web stack: html/css/js/php/python/sql/deployment.

We are also generalists, happy to code non-web projects.

Feel free to contact me: [email protected] or all: [email protected]

Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @03:59PM (#2213910)
Interesting. I wonder if the tech grads would be willing to stick around if a start up culture took root.
Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @11:34AM (#2213086)
> Extremely supportive people who will help entrepreneurs in an instant.

Can you elaborate on this?

Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @11:24AM (#2213065)
What's your business focus?
Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @11:23AM (#2213063)
I'd read about the influx of artists and musicians, but didn't have a link ref to it, so I didn't bring it up. I'm not dead-set on Detroit, but it seemed a good match, the artsy and the geeky crowd. There is a big jumbled mix of modern hip culture which lends itself to new web style and start-up culture...

Thanks for the counterpoint.

Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @10:42AM (#2212957)
Why? I mean it without sarcasm, why do you suggest that the three are not possible?
Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @09:41AM (#2212817)
Great - where else?

If we're going to pick our ideal city, what should it be? Maybe podunk Texas isn't going to have the best internet service. Who does, within the list of economically thirsty locations?

That's the underlying question: What city has cheap housing, good infrastructure and is friendly to tech startups?

Re:Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City on Sunday February 13, 2011 @09:26AM (#2212786)
I agree that programmers have been relatively economically protected. There's still wisdom saving money.

Perhaps the crime factor makes Detroit a tough sell (or the snow for some).

There must be another city in the throes of economic upheaval to choose.

My thoughts are that affordable housing + a few brave companies will bring other companies, talent and VC's.

Should Be: Detroit - Silicon City

I'v had this thought in the back of my mind for a good year now, and wanted to share it with the HN lot.Times are tough, jobs are sparse, Detroit has been destroyed by the withdrawal of the auto industry. It seems like the perfect time for the geeks to swoop in, set up projects/teams, buy cheap houses and re(t|m)ake the city. It's nothing simple or easy, but I can't help but see a potential...

This phrase, spoken by someone who doesn't know anything about the subject, contains an unrelated grain of truth.

Today's projects are cobbled together by giants sections of open source code, customized for specific purposes. A project may span languages, and usually includes more than one.

His ignorance made me appreciate the meta-programming language one could call "open source code."

Re:"Rate My Startup" Post Policy on Thursday November 04, 2010 @11:49PM (#1871953)
Hmm, encouraging commenting as a means, not as an end, is engendering a culture of under valued contributions...

I've been a member since late 2009, but I've made 2 or 3 comments so far. My case is not atypical. Maybe there's a better way?

Re:Pay It Forward on Thursday April 15, 2010 @06:05AM (#1267431)
I'd appreciate being added to the list. Thanks for the real life illustration of the pay it forward concept.
Re:Can we stop the language bashing please ? on Monday January 11, 2010 @05:00AM (#1044782)
Let's accept your argument, that each language is a complete toolbox. You'd likely grab a different toolbox to fix different classes of problems.

For large problems it's common to bring several different toolboxes (think of a primarily php site with a their public api scratched out in java).

The points among each language which contrast and define the 'things it's better at' differentiate the tools and or toolboxes (however you prefer to think of each).

Again, +1 for tearing down tearing down programming languages.

Re:Can we stop the language bashing please ? on Monday January 11, 2010 @04:44AM (#1044769)
Someone bashes php or Java, and, well I can understand that, but how dare you bash language bashing!

Joking aside, bravo for the denunciation, there's no best language, there's no worst language, they're tools in a box, the sooner we accept it the better.
