Excellent presentation on regulatory capture.
Great book for SV outsiders. And reflective of what I have read on here and in tech media.

Disappointing to see that MSM and more disappointing that even here there are not more people questioning the data and situation.

Also, where did the free thinking go? Not ostracising everyone that has a different view than the current world narrative.

There are dozens of sme in virus-related fields that are voicing the opposite of what govs and msm are saying. This is a great lesson for us all.

Let’s see it dismantle our current “ways of living”. Time for something new!

Re:Encrypted web traffic now exceeds 90% on Saturday November 02, 2019 @08:06AM (#21427175)
I like the explanation that simply explains "privacy": When you are going to the toilet, and everybody knows that your going and what you'll do there, but you still close the door (for the most of us, most of the time).
I would like to simply block irrelevant YouTube ads while my toddler indulges in ‘Land before time’ episodes. Is that possible? Last time I checked they use some randomised domains to load ads...
A ‘better’ non-paywall version: https://outline.com/mNDfrH
Pyramid schemes all eventually fail.
And thus another pyramid appears...
In a roundabout way Google are more like Pinterest than you think. Both utilising other people’s content.

All just glorified databases with different UI really. Yelp kind of has original content in people’s opinion of db entries.

YouTube however is slightly different since people post short and long form video on which is mostly original.

Interesting.

Re:Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect? on Friday May 11, 2018 @06:25AM (#17046129)
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Promoting “breathing” without thinking and not taking your thoughts too seriously has got me through a lot of emotional turmoil and “life situations”. Incredible even 5 years later.
Store of value comes to mind, a la crypto currency phenomena.
Re:Facebook, You Needy Sonofabitch on Tuesday September 12, 2017 @12:31AM (#15224831)
I've received 160 emails over around 200 days after signing up with a temporary email to load up ads. I've even filmed this: https://youtu.be/xUwjs2Te5hw

They are a juggernaut.

Re:North Korea fires missile over Japan on Monday August 28, 2017 @07:48PM (#15121094)
Is there any way an amateur can verify claims of a missile being fired? Does it appear on radar at all? Thinking one of the flight tracking sites.

In today's world I'm skeptical to say the least.

Re:Japanese Economic Takeoff After 1945 (2002) on Wednesday May 03, 2017 @01:05AM (#14253189)
It really was a great way to run their economy.
Re:Is this plane landing or departing? on Sunday January 15, 2017 @10:31PM (#13408036)
I immediately thought landing because the entire plane doesn't look like it has nice "straight" angles aligning with the runway. But I guess it is hard to tell from the angle of the photo itself.

On take off, the back wheels would've been nicely aligned with the runway.

Oh well, I deduced right?.

Re:The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006) on Monday April 04, 2016 @02:04AM (#11419703)
As he says in short the masterplan is to:

"Build sports car.

Use that money to build an affordable car.

Use that money to build an even more affordable car.

While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options.

Don't tell anyone."

Re:Use Negative Keywords on Wednesday May 06, 2015 @05:50AM (#9497522)
Good tip, but likelihood of anyone clicking is low anyway and you don't pay for impressions. Time better spent on other areas such as ad copy.
Re:The Decline of the Mobile Web on Thursday April 10, 2014 @04:02AM (#7564761)
I guess, but they really are just directing traffic to a an app rather than a browser. A subtle difference to sum, but when you take into consideration that that app would have probably been downloaded through their store, it keeps people in the same loop.

Google showing results that go directly to an App is an important piece of this whole puzzle: https://developers.google.com/app-indexing/webmasters/
Re:Malaysia Airlines MH370: Possible debris in Indian Ocean on Thursday March 20, 2014 @12:57AM (#7433979)
What are the chances that it is just ocean debris? I would say it's quite high.

Re:What Hard Drive Should I Buy? on Tuesday January 21, 2014 @05:07PM (#7098878)
Should consider what Jacob Applebaum revealed in his CCC preso about Hard drives: http://youtu.be/vILAlhwUgIU?t=46m25s

Cross out WD, Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung drives. Hitachi wins!
