At minimum 4k (given by whales = min 2 whales, thousands = min 2 thosands :) ) So I'm guessing that this covers Claud accounts.

edit: taking a look at https://yegge.ai/wyvern - probably outdated - the revenue is at 5k.

What if I want to buy copious amounts for a party? Or there was a discount so you want to stock up? This seems a bit shortsighted, it is not always the case that if you buy something then you need to consume it right away.

I'm not so sure about this one. I partially agree with the statement, but less-abled collegues might have troubles with this :( Ultimately there will be less stuff to do for a plain human being.

Re:AI CapEx Is Eating the Economy on Saturday July 19, 2025 @01:19PM (#44617369)
I wonder too. If the bubble pops, there will be a lot of cheap compute on the table. Whoever repurposes that toward some useful goal wins the prize :)
Re:AI CapEx Is Eating the Economy on Saturday July 19, 2025 @12:28PM (#44616873)
I think this is because the infra is already built and so there is no incentive to upgrade, since you won't get more customers, aside maybe taking them from competition. Afaik even the latter might be an issue, because typically you get whatever provider that is in the given building, so the provider wont get any new customers.

"p0rn" dir in root level is a nice touch for this.
If I may suggest another read: Perfect Imperfection by Polish author Jacek Dukaj. It's definitely weirder, than Accelerando, as the book drops you straight into the last parts of evolution curve, but definitely worth reading if you have liked Accelerando.

The story is super weird, but what I found out is that piecing together a picture of a far-future society from this story was very exciting.

Re:Museum Fatigue on Tuesday July 16, 2024 @08:01AM (#40975713)
I wonder if this can be connected to a fatigue that I experience during clothes shopping. Whenever I enter some kind of a clothing shop I get super tired after 10-20 minutes of searching for something, while my girlfriend could do that for hours on end. (I hate shopping in general it just makes me tired :( )

So a more accurate statement would be that a derivative of pollution has peaked.
Re:Compiling with Constraints on Tuesday March 19, 2024 @05:14AM (#39754018)
This was on AGH (Akademia Górniczo Hutnicza) in Krakow, Poland. I did my masters there. The course was kind of zero to hero type of thing.

Here is the syllabus (unfortunately it is in polish but maybe you will be able to translate it): https://sylabusy.agh.edu.pl/en/document/065a0d32-a947-4234-a...

Re:Compiling with Constraints on Monday March 18, 2024 @05:52PM (#39750492)
Huh I haven't thought that I will see minizinc outside of my university. I keep being pleasantly surprised that constraint programming and formal methods are being used somewhere out there.

A very non-technical take from my side, but those control vectors really remind me of hormones in humans. They modify large swathes of model behaviour at once.

I give it 10 years before we see AI psychiatrists prescribe a happiness control vector supplementation for your pet assistant.

Re:Apple bans ChatGPT use by employees, report says on Friday May 19, 2023 @10:05AM (#36002102)
I use LLM for generating data, for example to fill SQL tables for tests or some python datastructures. Transforming data works really well, so tasks like "take bibtex entry and convert it into citation"

I've tried to code entire IOS app with it but failed. You still need to have knowledge about what you are actually doing. I feel like it can accelerate learning, but in a very narrow way. When I was trying to do my own android app 3 years back I've learned bunch of different things about what I was trying to actually do and also around the whole ecosystem. When I was trying to code the IOS app I made progress fast, but I felt like I was just learning the thing that I wanted to learn not the actual surrounding knowledge. Now this sounds good, but I feel like I'm leaving something on the table when doing this kind of "accelerated learning".

I've also tried autogpt/langchain approaches to automate some writing commands for me like "remove all files that are beginning with abc". It did generate appropriate command but sometimes if they failed (the files weren't there in the first place) it just fell into the loop of constantly trying to get a successful deletion by refining the command. It even tried to go to the / to find all such files, talk about paperclips huh. Truth to be told I haven't played with the idea much so there is a room for improvement

LLMs kinda help, they are especially good when provided with source, but I don't really feel like a 1000x super-hacker with VR-glasses that spawns hundreds of agents each minute to do different task. (I would like to though)

I would like to do something with the LLMs but every idea I have already has an established startup or the argument "you could just write this in chatgpt" is made. Literally take whatever comes to your mind and add "LLM" or "GPT", there is a startup for that.

I love when thieves are trying to steal copper, but all they get is a broken fiber optic ;)

My dad works as a network engineer, and he told me a story that one of the banks in Poland lost one of the internet providers. They investigated and found out that thieves stole hundreds of meters of a fiber cable, because they thought that it's copper.

Maybe emitting a warning would be good. I'm no DBA so remembering all operations that cannot be rolledback might be tough. (Though maybe I should know all of them if they aren't rollbackable :P )
Re:Tech Workers Aren’t as Rich as They Used to Be on Sunday May 07, 2023 @12:55PM (#35853322)
This is what I think as well, I think we will see just another failure mode of capitalism, accumulation of wealth in hands of the few to the detriment of the rest, bubbles popping etc. . I think that the system was kind of designed for infinite growth, which worked well for sometime, but we might be reaching some ceilings here and there.

Kinda sad that I've just got my first full-time gig, I mean I'm very happy and grateful, but I feel like I should have been born 5 years earlier to really get enough funds and traction to feel safe.

Re:Why Take a Compiler Course? on Sunday March 26, 2023 @05:21AM (#35312591)
Anyone has suggestions for taking such course (books, websites etc.)? During my studies there was no compiler course on my university (which is saddening). I would also like to find some reputable OS internals course or book...
Re:Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive? on Saturday March 25, 2023 @06:05AM (#35301162)
Since it's a transformer model, I use it to... "transform" the data. - Change raw citation into bibtex entry - Fix spelling mistakes - convert csv file into json (though you can do it without employing trillion parameter model) etc.
Re:TikTok Congress Hearing on Saturday March 25, 2023 @05:55AM (#35301107)
I think this would effectively drop the usage (maybe not to 0 but enough to allow other social services to come back on the stage). Most people don't know how to sideload or don't want to sideload anything out of app store, the webpage version is unwieldy to use.
Re:GitHub Copilot X: The AI-powered developer experience on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @01:53PM (#35264670)
I don't think so, bytecode / machine code must be really precise, while LLMs are producing nondeterministic outputs (at least GPT). Add "hallucinating" of the output to the pile and right now I think it's infeasible.
It does to some degree. Some people have shown that you can prompt GPT to behave like shell or python interpreter. Then you can "execute" some statements, of course to some degree of saneness. However I'm not sure if it does in this particular case where we ask it for explanation.

Also see this paper: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2301.04589.pdf

tldr if we equip LLM models with infinite memory it becomes Turing complete.

Re:Ventura Issues on Wednesday December 28, 2022 @05:19AM (#34159443)
I've recently bought my macbook air m2 (and also my first apple device), so far I've encountered some issues listed below:

- WiFi driver crashed after I've turned off the wifi, causing kernel to panic, rebooting my device. That happened twice already.

- Plugging TV via HDMI via a USB-C hub, switching to HDMI sound output, causes all media to jump to +8-300 hours (even if given media length is smaller than that...), strangely enough changing audio output back to macbook's fixes the problem.

- Activity monitor (macos task manager) takes FOREVER to load, if top/htop can load in mere miliseconds, why not the native app?

- Sometimes app bar won't hide in fullscreen mode (don't really know if that's intended), hovering mouse over it will fix that.

While I love the overall build quality, battery life and hardware, the software has some measurable "jank" in it, to the point I'm seriously considering not to buy apple stuff again. I've considered those devices to work out-of-the-box and after sitting on barely working linux as my daily driver I've decided to go for it and buy one. Now I've lost all hope for "just works" system, they do not exist.
