Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:09PM (#50340976)
Yeah and if it was using LoRa or something similar, ot could reach hundreds of meters through buildings or many kilometers in open space, with a very small antenna. If they built in a big antenna into the TV chassis itself, it cpuld get quite and insane reach but it would be more expensive.

What it would connect to ? To other TVs (comfortably connected to mains power) forming a mesh network. A bunch of Internet connected gateways planted by the manufacturers would capture the data from the network.

MeshCore and MeshTastic have demonstrated community networks like this, so I would not put it past TV manufacturers to try missuse the same idea.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:01PM (#50340850)
Yeah, at this point we need probably open hardware TVs or privacy laws with company breaking fines. Ideally both.
Well, could be still useful for hiding things in bulk materials ?

From scientific uses (sensors, cables or supports not disrupting experiments) to smuggling/hiding listening devices/trackers or boobytraps in bulk shipments, etc.

Those models are open weight, not open source.

Open source model would provide you with all the data & tooling necessary for you to rebuilt the model from original or modified data.

Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:32AM (#50334724)
Good thing if you can afford the vulnerability detection run.

I could imagine scenarios where only well off developers and companies could afford that.

Then if you don't have the money, you are out of luck and risk having vulnerabilities in your code.

And it takes just one adversary to pay the bot & the bot will happily find an exploit for them in your code.

This worry this could lead to a serious power imbalance & furthe damage the free software community...

Ja, das ist doch klar. :)

Just don't.
What will they ban you for next, Jazz music ?

A clear indicator you can't depend on anything Anthropic makes, as they will try to actively sabotage what you might be doing, basically on a whim.

Re:GitHub Incident with Actions, Pages, and Webhooks on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:42PM (#50308367)
Isn't that why most people are on GitHub in the first place ? Which then, Windows style eventually turns into people wanting to use GitHub also for company work, where the real money comes from for GitHub.

Without free CI in GitHub, you might as well say:

"they can just shut the whole thing down and this reliability issue will be solved immediately"

Re:GitHub Incident with Actions, Pages, and Webhooks on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:39PM (#50308337)
I'm sure there is a good meme to use for such a frequently occurring problem, but it would be too over used by this point.
IIRC Porco Rosso is supposed to take place at least partially in the Free State of Fiume (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_State_of_Fiume) that while eventually annexed by Italy in 1924, after WW2 it became Rijeka, now the third largest city in Croatia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijeka).
If there is a villain in Mononoke, it is the unseen Emperor, living in luxury somewhere in Asuka, drinking tea and seeing other people as simple Shogi figures.

It is the emperor that wants immortality and triggers the chain of events that get the main forest god killed & cause a lot of destruction. And in the end - he is still unaffected, while Eboshi & co have to rebuild all of their infrastructure almost from zero... :P

Like, frankly, any passengers that are aggressive towards the train crew might as well be told to walk back to the nearest bus stop. Like seriously, in this case especially (a high speed train) the utmost focus should be given to safety, so anyone going against that (like putting pressure on the train crew) should be ignored if not fined/booted of the train.

Also in this case - why the hell they just did not wait for the primary safety system to go back online before doing anything ? Is it so faulty that they get used to it being broken or what ?

And baring that, how is the train even able to go full speed without the primary safety system being operational ? It really should be hardwired to cap the speed at 40 km/h or even less (including zero) unless the safety system is confirmed online and operational.

IIRC the japanese Shinkansen trains use a system called ATC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_train_control#Japan) since 1964 (!) which automatically starts breaking if a train goes faster than the maximum allowed speed in a track circuit. So presumably if connecting with the track circuit is lost the maximum speed defaults to 0 & all trains stop until proper protection is restored.

You can scratch Cisco from the list - they just announced they will re-vibecode all of their codebase! So there will not be any explots for their hardware in the future - one way or the other. ;-)
Re:Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:32AM (#50305373)
Commercial service trying to sell you the result of scrapping all the data from the Internet without permission of the authors.
Clear case of AI psychosis.
Seems like preparing who to blame if/once the effort fails. ;-)
I guess Cisco decided it has not alienated its customers enough till now & its finally time to get people running for the woods - at least if those peoples would like their network to continue working.
Re:Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:18AM (#50305146)
So we are going from running your stuff from cloud that randomly closes accounts or charges ridiculous costs to pinpointing arbitrary AI use cases and banning them on a whim. I guess that's progress !?

Indeed, cloud == other peoples computers, with all what it entails.

You also miss appointments and are late if you are dead due to a train crash.
Re:Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:42AM (#50288023)
Yeah & as I have said before - I'd rather fix my printer every 5 prints and/or have worse print quality, than to use a printer I can't fix & can't use generic material of my choice on.
But what if you become unable to pay for it ? What if:

- they raise the prices 10x

- go bankrupt

- ban you or your country

- decide not to help you with what you want to do for opaque reasons

- you are in jail because the model halucinated something and the company promptly reported you to the police

Better avoid all off these and go local IMHO.

At least back then they could have avoided being bombed by not participating in a genocide. But they did & got bombed.
Sure, but there are some issues with that:

- LoRa has actually quite a long range if done right (tens of km, upt to hundred+) so you would have to jam all that.

- This kind of jamming would be actually illegal, so you would have to make it legal first/tollerate it & expend non-trivial respurces to jam tiny repeaters from Aliexpress on random trees.

- The 868 MHz hand is actually used by a lot of IoT stuff like sensor networks, water/gas/electricity meter monitoring, some alarm systems - so if you did effectively jam the band, those things would break as well.

- Also if things went as far as active jamming being used, things might be heated up enough that whoever is running the mesh won't be playing by the reules as well - like, using a different, notmally ilegal fregvency or even triangulate and attack the jammers.

Yeah, MeshCore works impressively well but definitely there is a huge space for many nice improvements and novel use cases. Only time will tell if they will come MeshCore, the other LoRa mesh projects or something completely new. :)
Many communities also hold their yearly meetups & dinners there, often the only time people working together daily in the community see each other face to face :)
It really depends on what ypu are dealing with - if you are worried about communication being too centralized and monopolized, it might be a good idea to start building and alternative. Doing that might avoid the situation getting worse, slow it down or even reverse the trend.

If you are at a stage of "we shoot people on suspicion of them being against The Cause" then indeed, this will not help.

Still, if you are not at that stage, doing something is better than nothing.

In Europe it is using the 868 MHz ISM band with some duty cycle rules (maximu of 10% of every hour can be used for broadcasting).

In the US apparently 433 MHz is used instead.

Sure does - MeshCore for example:

https://meshcore-analyzer.eu/#map

Quite active here in Czech Republic for example.

As for the IP protocol - maybe its too much overhead for this use case ?

MeshCore uses PKI and public key prefixes as addresses & for routing/repeating.

What about a solar powered mesh network build on commonly available LoRa chips and micro controllers ?
