Re:# [derive(Clone)] Is Broken on Tuesday July 08, 2025 @05:34AM (#44498473)
Just looking at the examples, you can tell that they wouldn't compile: the other structs passed in don't derive the trait as well, nor implement it. It's really simple, not broken.
Whelp, that's one less application that I feel compelled to make

Definitely the most likely

The developer could use the cupertino framework for iOS releases, but usually choose not to.

46 here and broadly experienced across multiple stacks. My last job ended 3 months ago and the market has been rough in the US at least. I struggle to get interviews. It’s not just you.
Re:We should all be reading more Ursula Le Guin on Thursday April 04, 2024 @03:35PM (#39934831)
I have a hard copy of this one. Definitely a favorite!

There are at least two implementations there on that page:

- One in typescript - One in rust

I was homeschooled back in the 90’s and it was all on me to teach myself. Have things really changed?

Thanks! Ordered
Re:Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired? on Thursday February 09, 2023 @09:22PM (#34734869)
I just had my first week last week. Took a startup first engineer position and I’m not regretting it!
Re:Ask HN: What would you do if given a sabbatical? on Saturday June 18, 2022 @06:04PM (#31794219)
I would work for a decentralized platform and a video game that would run on it. The platform and the video game work hand in hand and have been planned since 1996, but I’ve never had enough time.
Re:Ask HN: Are hackerspaces still relevant today? on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @11:08PM (#31762119)
Hacker spaces are the most relevant, when tech crashes are happening or tech hype is high: it’s important to have a community of people to simply hack with; to lean on each other in comradeship; to learn from; to teach. Hope comes from this.
This may seem useless, but stop questioning yourself: make a choice, wrong or right, and stick with it. Making a choice, and learning to work around the consequences, is one of the most important character building events you will ever experience. Make a choice, resolve to stick through it no matter what.

My kids say otherwise…
AltaVista was absolutely great! I got way more interesting content through them! Their death was a real loss that finally forced me to use Google, and not for the better.
I would NEVER want a setup like you are proposing. Those are awful ergonomic!
Re:Tell HN: I'm Afraid We're Shutting Down on Thursday June 02, 2022 @08:58PM (#31602821)
The great resignation was mostly about us who could survive a paycheck or two, leveraging the chaos to demand our value: if the current employer wouldn’t pay it, others would. We didn’t hesitate to move and make the previous employer pay for their neglect of us.
Re:Programming in the Apocalypse on Monday May 30, 2022 @03:26PM (#31562674)
Mindless distraction is exactly what you turn to when your efforts to better your life become too monumental to bear: lifespans shorten because destitution drives people to apathy or an open desire for suicide.
Re:Programming in the Apocalypse on Monday May 30, 2022 @03:13PM (#31562542)
Exactly. Rust is actually a loser in this due to the lack of a fleshed out stdlib.
I have extreme test anxiety (part of my anxiety disorder). Even as a software engineer of 25+ years, I still fail live code tests more frequently than I like. I’m just happy that I don’t have to take them often.
Re:Ask HN: What is the best programming book you've read? on Sunday September 26, 2021 @10:45AM (#28661269)
1. Why’s Poignant Guide to Ruby

2. Practical Common Lisp

3. A Programmer’s Introduction to Mathematics

4. Data Structures and Programming Design in C

5. The Art of Agent Oriented Modeling

In the US, doing the latter is a tax write off and perhaps enough to give you a stimulus.
I agree. I’ve been developing with Rust since pre 1.0. I call developing in Rust, developing by guess work (or where to put the next clone(), unwrap(), Box<>). It’s nearly impossible to write without the analyzer giving you hints along the way. The only fun I experience is the joy of finally getting the compiler to pass.

So, I’ve seriously been considering designing a language with the same assurances, but with different mechanics. One that is easier to learn and use due to the consistency of syntax patterns used across the breadth and depth of it.

You are not getting it right: he specifically excludes himself from the category of genius. What he bemoans is the languishing of his ideas and posits that, despite the several interests in them and efforts to fulfill said interests, the timing may be wrong for them to be taken up.
Re:Ask HN: What is your low stress, high paid job? on Friday January 22, 2021 @10:16PM (#25879250)
Agreed with the settling lower down on the ladder. I’ve been all the way up (CTO) and found it be too stressful. I prefer to stay in engineering and not moving back into management.
Re:Ask HN: What is your low stress, high paid job? on Friday January 22, 2021 @10:11PM (#25879216)
Senior Software Engineer and Team Lead for a Analytics Contractor. Pretty highly paid.

I put together teams around projects, mentor juniors, and build cross project teams to fix architectural problems. My favorite part is actually teaching juniors and watching them grow. I live for that!

My advice is to find a niche that you love and stay away from industries that stress you out. There are a ton of different sub industries in SWE.

I would definitely stay clear of startups if you don’t handle stress well: startups and failing companies are the worst and for the same reason – they are both in a financial free fall trying to gain a new lease on life.

I learned a lot of basic Linux through the same shell provider back in the day!

We have cli based games, an internal irc, federated mail, etc. It's a fun community.
