Sailors still rely(ied) on stars even with chronometers but I get the point you're making. "Head west for 8 weeks" wasn't quite enough.
Brightened my day. ;)

I think the answer has to do with calls to action and the assumption users make that the cursor hand is a link to another web page or another part of the site, while not all buttons are hyperlinks. Probably not as much of an argument in these days, though, especially as most sites are single page applications where basically every button does indeed do some sort of reroute, target blank (new tab), or network call at the very least.

Also, to be pedantic, not all buttons are entirely clickable, only small portions of them.

Edit: Interesting that HN doesn't use the cursor hand for reply / updating. ;)

Explicitly, yes. Implicitly, no.
Re:Winners and losers of the work-from-home revolution on Monday June 14, 2021 @09:53AM (#27502535)
They are a moving target, but my org has them pretty closely pinned to 2hrs of "work time" per point, at least ideologically. When you see that go from 12-18ish in person per person to 30+ (~38 average consistently for me), it's pretty straightforward that the org is actually getting closer to its billable 80 hours per sprint, even with 3ish daily Zoom meetings. And to boot, the quality of design, PMing, ticket writing, feature scoping, and everything else around it has increased, which probably helps the productivity.
Re:Winners and losers of the work-from-home revolution on Monday June 14, 2021 @09:47AM (#27502474)
I have worked more (and harder, quantifiable by sprint points if you must have a number) in the past year from home than in the entire rest of my career combined. My close ones tell me I'm just making "the man" more money, but I really don't mind it for some reason. I feel like I'm accomplishing goals and feel fulfilled in ways that I didn't previously. No signs of burnout, perhaps I am a freak of nature.

They are ruining / skewing the stats of that plugin in the readme for others, it uses an algo to determine profile rankings based on everyone elses stats.

Recruiters will straight up ask for .DOC versions, too. The gall.

Intel from the ground in Atlanta is that a person in the article is trying to milk it a bit. I cannot confirm myself, though.

I will say after doing a couple phone interviews with them recently, they make it extremely clear they are working heavily on D&I initiatives and creating a "non bro" "no asshole" culture. That is to say, some changes might already be in motion.

Re:Apple buys a company every three to four weeks on Wednesday February 24, 2021 @10:01PM (#26259201)
In all stock deals, how much does that end up being? Like 1 share Apple per 1000 stock options of the startup?
Re:CS193p: Developing Apps for iOS on Wednesday February 10, 2021 @11:34AM (#26091331)
Can't wait to see all the same apps popping up on GitHub.
A rural small town judge probably doesn't have the best insight into that, just that Corporal Bubba said he calibrated it so it must've been right.

I know, this is exceedingly cynical.

When the officer shows up and swears under oath that he "calibrated it that morning" it's not so easy.
Re:The Mediocre Programmer on Saturday February 06, 2021 @09:23PM (#26052072)
There should be a fourth fear in the "Giving Up" section: giving up a decent to great salary when being mediocre cuts it just fine in a lot of positions.

It's got nothing to do with Robinhood. If a hedge decides to cover the short so they don't have to admit defeat and go bankrupt, then the entire market goes down because they'll end up selling thousands of unrelated shares for their cover.
How is it like Miranda (just trying to figure out your metaphor)? One possible response to extreme over stimulation or aggression is to completely shutdown?

Most Americans have no idea, even after Queens Gambit.
As well as the fraudulent PPP claims from prison.
Re:SaaS We Happily Pay For on Monday December 28, 2020 @11:55AM (#25560748)
I believe so, but it requires more infrastructure setup. You'll have to have a prod level test ACH account through Dwolla or something, then watch Stripe interact with that. It's not just as simple as switching card numbers, unless you just want to use your debit card or the company provided one.

Re:Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills on Monday December 21, 2020 @11:10AM (#25496168)
This isn't directly related, but some of the credit reporting agencies can have surprise medical bills written off due to covid related hardships. This is to say, if a surprise bill happens to hit collections, and you're affected by covid, it can be removed through the report process. I have no idea what this looks like in the long term, though.
They don't actually care about the little people. It's more about keeping the company in check so it doesn't become a monopoly for retail thumb traders faster than the next closest competitors in that category can catch up (which would be Webull I guess?). It's also a reminder that, hey, there's a shitton of (old) money in this field, better not get cocky.

Possibly too cynical of a take, but I'll reiterate the SEC doesn't care about the people browsing WSB.

Re:Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work? on Monday December 14, 2020 @08:57AM (#25417528)
True actual coding? 2-3 hours on average, and usually at night when all others are offline (8pm-1am window). All the other BS like emailing, meetings, assisting with manual testing, responding to support related Slacks, fire fighting, setting up DB queries or visualizations, checking a result of some scheduled job (these last two being business asks / annoyances and don't happen daily but you get it), etc, results in 5-8 hours BS, 2-3 hours code.

Hobby projects I can work on for 10-12 hours straight and still feel like I could go longer, but after a three day sprint of this, I have to take at least a day off to regroup my thoughts and make sure I'm not too far away from the original intention / goal, or over-engineering.

Absolutely. Angular / React was very much an east coast / west coast thing for awhile, as one example.

Cypress was officed at ATDC at Georgia Tech (now downtown), so a lot of companies and startups in metro Atlanta adopted it and helped it take off. Further, any student from GT or SPSU trying to intern through ATDC (and probably ATV) would have been at least tangentially exposed to it, meaning these new grads / young devs got exposed early enough in their careers as to be impressionable, and more likely to adopt something new. It also helps to adopt a technology when you're three doors down from the devs.

It has the sexiness factor right now, especially in the southeast.
