Re:Why Don't We Live in an Art Nouveau World? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:26AM (#50352391)
yes but when you have it talking basically exclusively about "love", it's much harder to swallow
Re:Why Don't We Live in an Art Nouveau World? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:20AM (#50352325)
i'm also not religious and having lived in a remote place for more than a year, i lost count of the amount of times i sat at the grass in a completely meditative state by starring at clouds, mountains and sunsets
Re:Why Don't We Live in an Art Nouveau World? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:08AM (#50352184)
nature has proven calming effects on humans... bird sings, even plants on the roof of an urban area can have positive effects just because of the vision

i highly doubt a christian church has the same effect. everytime i see a church i think about atrocities commited by the religion and alienation

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:49PM (#50283026)
and hopefully soon we have decentralized protocols as the standard when we think about user spaces. amen

not big but i'm still happy about how it allowed me to build a really expressive musical tracker with micro-tonality implemented by default. partly by Csound score paradigm but we also have an interesting macros, a scale paradigm for adding notes and real-time p-field information

Re:Bring Back the Cool Save File Screens on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:24PM (#50234483)
exactly. i recently started to play the 1° Colin Mc Rae on the PS1 and if anyone miss having to save manually with waiting times i bet they are blind by nostalgia. nature forbid Gran Turismo 2 menu transitions without the '20 times faster loading times' on retroarch. save states are a bless

how biased you are?
Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:18PM (#50199107)
> They hum. That's about it.

lol. just by having a light pole there you start disturbing the insectoid life

Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:11PM (#50199019)
Brazil has one of if not the best laws about conservation on the planet!

with that said, ~ 80% of forest loss is due to livestock, which great part if not all expansions by now are illegal. we export most of our meat. now a bunch of moralist are worried with their bellies full of cheese and meat

Re:What shall I teach my son? on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:51PM (#50174726)
exactly. unconscious bias is an observed psychologic phenomena and i have my doubts if an adult can opinate agnostically about all of them. sure you don't want your kids getting together with bullies but that's basic compassion. let them tie/explore with people freely
oh no! your over estimating the hundreds of millions of USD saved from a health population that doesn't have to deal with air and noise pollution... also have you ever thought about the infrastructure of public transports? i don't cycle, much less mix myself in a metro/tram with all kind of people /s
i can come up with a bunch of PET plastic research and companies too but go look at the state of oceans...

stop eating startup and journalism headlines good intentions promises

quite sad to see that even educated hackers ain't getting this is a bad news - solar is dirt. nasty chemicals on it's production, nasty thrash after it's commercial span is over. nuclear is much more reliable, has tons of space to improve, cheaper and greener over the long term. such a shame this greenwashing

there's a whole lot of systemic issues with wealthy people buying low-poly cars to their collection.

Re:Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land on Thursday October 15, 2026 @03:00PM (#50108567)
which is your next argumentative step? say your not disrupting an ecosystem that probably outlives the early human specie by hundreds of thousands of years? average North American that thinks just because you have money the planet and species living within are after your narcissistic ideals
Re:Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:51PM (#50106492)
or better! exercise and support the freedom to roam [0] by not having fences and have no dogs which probably disrupt wildlife too

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:58PM (#50095132)
should i also mention that people who funded their religion hunted jews searching for the holy grail and were present at one if not the biggest holocaust of human history (the colonization of America, between 1500 and 1600, which killed from 25 to 100 million people)
Re:Orkut.com on Thursday October 08, 2026 @09:01PM (#50014689)
it feels like the release of Habbo Origins, WoW Classic, Runescape Classic and so on... basically everything social you could make with Orkut you can with Instagram and this one has novel stuff like the stories/reels

no adult has time to hug and kiss via virtual characters like we did when we were teens and we were experiencing for the first time the "internet/social-media" thing - with that typed, an ad-less social-network if gets popular is certainly better than the shit show of Instagram/Tiktok had created but people using social-media to connect to their friends aren't obligated to follow influencers, so maybe it's irrelevant? my deleted Instagram account which by joining the game quite late (2-3 years ago), rendered updates of all my school friends and i didn't saw any ad. after making it clear i wasn't interested in seeing ads. in-between my friends stories

Re:Beauty in DVD Menus on Thursday October 08, 2026 @03:12PM (#50010573)
Finding Nemo was the first DVD i got from my parents. great stuff on Disc 2!

paid but worth it: https://youtu.be/mupd3-w9qfQ?si=3-u0rz9H1tBi7Ums

the documentary about a guy who invented his own self-steering gear to travel solo back in the 70s

i don't think one necessarily needs the best of the best... probably cheap is enough for a bunch of people

i'll start by having my OLED smartphone dying after many years and the one i got used LCD. much worse and it felt like plastic. colors, brightness, even if my screen now refreshes twice as fast as the previous - fast forward 2 years i don't think i ever thought about the difference, nor saw it after 1 or 2 weeks with my phone

totally valid critique on durable products and better substances for cleaning although

Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Thursday September 24, 2026 @03:22PM (#49835633)
i would say Librera FD, much better on Android than KOR, specially for images
dios mio!

i just came back to GNOME from KDE after messing something with my system (disk space was eaten fully i don't know why) but all your points are mostly invalid... you can literally start GNOME out of the overview with a simple extension install, then you can launch your apps via whatever you f** want! dmenu? custom shortcuts? mouse gestures? a python script that will listen to your voice? based on weather? come ON, you talk like the bash doesn't exist

your max. and min. buttons are just a toggle in Tweaks app - i have a dedicated button on my mouse which toggles the speed sensibility (inside GNOME not on hardware), really useful for doing digital collage work on GIMP

now the extension critic i found it valid! but who knows how far someone can get with AI... personally i had a custom text box at my top-bar after 2-3 prompts which informed where i'm with my keyboard layer (running QMK, doing HID communication)

Apple is a big pile of shit with biased design much harder to modify but also: locked down to the point your now eating ads. in your expensive premium aluminum box

Re:Nobody pays for FOSS, we can force them to on Sunday September 20, 2026 @05:28PM (#49780256)
after reading Ford Foundation document [0] i'll go beyond and purpose FOSS not only limit commercial use but also forking [1] as it seems we have an endless stream of libraries which do the same thing, scattering even more this "fragile" ecosystem which would benefit so much of big tech's evergreen

[0] https://www.fordfoundation.org/learning/library/research-rep... [1] https://happort.org/constraining_freedom

oh yes sure. just like we can shift the population into installing Debian into their machines so we also deter M$ and Apple abuse /s
how the wealthy would get more votes in a direct democratic system? they are literally the minority, thus fewer votes
> Democracy is about (in theory at least) giving each person a meaningful say in their own governance, which in turn implies not allowing any single person to become too powerful.

this is "direct democracy" and it's not even close to exist in USA... even with that a society can allow powerful people to exist if they don't create any law forbidding that
