I don't think that is the only alternative. If the end goal is to preserve life for humans, completely nuking the soil into a wasteland, treating it with carcinogens and then allowing a company to genetically modify seeds and copyright them is a pretty bad and short sighted strategy.

Allowing a known carcinogen to make crops "easier to harvest" has to do with profit margin not food supply. People literally use this to kill dandelions in their yards. I have known many people who have died from cancer. I have eaten dandelions, while bitter, are actually healthy. A good start would be to work with nature instead of trying to out engineer it.

If roundup is your alternative to starvation you're probably just delaying the inevitable.

My father told me he loved me and was proud of me and how i turned out and that he had no regrets (He doesn't really know my name anymore). I would do the same for my loved ones and tell them things are ok and to let me go. (I've also told them if i don't remember them, the wolves will take good care of me!) Looking a his lifestyle and considering this as an epidemic, lifestyle & inflammation seems to be big factors. Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes are also risk factors. If i was aware early enough i would start exercising more, adopt an anti-inflammatory diet, meditate and consider psychedelics https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32973482 and get my affairs in order as much as i could. So basically the test may help people shift gears harder and consider lifestyle changes and preparation.
They must have healthcare.

in regards to mentions of antidepressants, there are a ton of herbal options as well, also getting your vitamins checked is a good place to start...

Yep. A few simple things that can help, shelf browse the library self help section, make a point to go leave the house - a simple invented errand, look for opportunities to make someone else's day a tiny bit brighter. In terms of the latter, smile at someone, let someone go ahead of you in line/in traffic, help an elder carry groceries, it doesn't have to be huge, write a word of encouragement to someone you don't know and will never meet - hang in there markus_zhang!.. Leaving now, have an errand to run...

While it may be considered andectoal, this fits with what i've seen in my family. In my mind and from what i've read it seems to be more of a combination of factors - diabetes, an APOE gene, toss in a little depression/loss of purpose/retirement/isolation, etc

I find the studies with gamma interesting: https://www.alzheimers.gov/clinical-trials/gamma-induction-a...

I think it would be good to bring more attention to noticing when things start to slip, because as things progress there can be less openess to trying new things/focus on maintaining state.

'native american' has always seemed off to me given that native people may or may not identify as "american" and america was thrust upon them. When referring to a group i generally use tribal name, "native", indigenous or "native people in america" (when needing to refer to a general world location)
Re:Ask HN: How to grow after 10 years in the industry? on Wednesday June 30, 2021 @11:23AM (#27689657)
I am mainly concerned your letting past achievements limit future growth. One thing about technology, you leave and come back often times things get better. Besides you already got there once...
haha, nice and true to a point with a few caveats - you may search for what you think you need which is a "whatsit" which can be fixed by a "whoseit", which may be in fact be best solved by a "thingamajig".
I would add to list sifting thru 100s of reviews then wondering if they or the 4.5 star rating are from bots, lazy people or those who just unwrapped it.

On the plus side you can shop online when your kids are sleeping.

At my local hardware store this saved me $40 and a whole bunch of plumbing and a trip back to the store when the seasoned veteran simply asked what i was trying to do. The money, meh, saving the time and frustration priceless.

The best help is when someone asks you what you are trying to accomplish instead of what isle something is in. It's why you go back to that store and learn when certain employees are working. To the young workers, i totally get that your underpaid and not your career path or one at all. Perhaps for some of the older/retired gen is it more supplimental income and they enjoy being a knowledge base for people like me who sometimes know enough to be dangerous..

Re:Just Be Rich on Tuesday April 13, 2021 @09:57AM (#26792166)
Not sure why you refer to the renter as "he", but anyway there are many reasons people cannot afford to buy a house such as living paycheck to paycheck, damaged credit, no collateral etc.
Maybe they are thinking more about the subsription model?

Re:Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Walk on Monday February 08, 2021 @01:27PM (#26068174)
Cold weather people can checkout something like yaktrax - have found the ones with chains hold up longer, the ones with straps across the top of the foot stay on (if you lose one you will walk in circles!). No shame in using poles, coldweather facemasks either.

Dogs are a great motivator and pretty good companions if you like them/can swing that...

Re:Ask HN: How to Become a Music Buff? on Wednesday August 19, 2020 @09:14AM (#24210002)
Finding an music/artists you like and seeing who their influences are and checking them out may be one path. DJ's can cut through that even faster since they surface and reference more material.

There are also a lot of movies out there - Béla Fleck made a movie tracing the banjo back to africa Throw Down Your Heart, if your looking to chronological type stuff in America, Ken Burns did a series on American Jazz and Country music - https://www.pbs.org/kenburns, Muscle Shoals, Buena Vista Social Club, The Nu LatAm Sound may be of interest for non western movies

If i were the designer, for absolute clarity i would change any character you type to display as a dollar sign.
Thanks, highly recommended. It's nice to hear Yvon in his own words, always aspiring to do better.

I'm not sure why Patagonia boycotting Facebook ads is even news. Given Facebooks track record i don't know why people use their service or advertise there at all.

Maybe just the "tight community where there's follow up and support" may help.
From a strictly cost/business perspective it's brilliant. Remove hardware you have to pay for embedded in your device and sell people an adapter at an increased price.
Not sure his positions are exactly popular with establishment politics.

He took a busload of breast cancer patients from Vermont to Canada so they could buy cheaper prescription drug and voted against trillion dollar wars.
