Re:Ask HN: Help me see why everyone seems to love TDD? on Thursday July 28, 2016 @09:33AM (#12180051)
We have automated tests of all types, covering almost everything, but we still find use in our QA team. They also help us write BDD tests.

It definitely isn't if you're James Harden.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2015) on Thursday April 02, 2015 @05:54AM (#9309597)
Hi, any details on what you are looking for? Stack etc?
I was just kicking some butt in there with the green team.

Wonderful game by the way. However, when the game finishes I get a messy overlay of texts all in one place (assuming it's the name of each member of the team)?

Re:The F# Path to Relaxation [video] on Tuesday March 03, 2015 @04:02AM (#9136761)
I totally agree. However, there seems to be very few jobs for F# and I'd love to write use it on a daily basis.

I've taken the advice of F# For Fun and Profit (http://fsharpforfunandprofit.com/series/low-risk-ways-to-use...) and started writing various tools in F#.

For anyone in the UK it will be shown at 11.05pm Wed 25 Feb on Channel 4.

It looks like it's 180W, so it would run for about 4 pence an hour (in the UK, depending on rates).

I just noticed the Shadow of the Beast demo (SOTB), this is one of the quintessential Amiga games. Wonderful art and music (also rock-hard difficulty).

Not long ago the game was ported to popular modern formats, for anyone interested: http://www.indieretronews.com/2014/10/shadow-of-beast-legacy...

For anyone who has taken the time to learn Dvorak: From the point you began to learn it, how long did it take to become more proficient at Dvorak than QWERTY? How much more proficient do you consider yourself to be at typing as a result?
Re:Show HN: Keyboards Club on Thursday September 25, 2014 @06:57AM (#8366516)
There's an Apple Store download 'TouchPal' on the Android page. I like the minimalist design.
Are they going to decorate the innards of said pyramids with diagrams of themselves hauling stuff with sledges, water and ropes too?
Re:Poll: Are you a drinker or a teetotaler? on Friday September 19, 2014 @07:59AM (#8340048)
I'd like to be able to do this. If I have just a single beer I can get quite tired/sleepy, so when I drink I tend to have a few. Actually, I was talking about this recently with a friend and quite often a hangover can be more intense if I have, say, 3 beers than if I have 6. Really strange.
Yes (in the UK), we're just slightly above it as a household, but I'm more ahead of it as an individual.
Re:Results of Stack Overflow survey of 20,000 developers on Wednesday June 11, 2014 @06:59AM (#7877299)
I'm from the UK and I earned £13.5k as a junior (at a very large multinational company), I was 21 and just out of university. I only broke £25k when I hit 29 years old. I consider myself to be a good developer.

The salaries in the US seem 'pie in the sky' to me.

Re:World Cup 2014 Predictions and Results on Wednesday May 28, 2014 @11:54AM (#7810909)
We shouldn't forget about Costa Rica too. They finished above Mexico in qualifying, they have a decent team and they will probably have a slight climate advantage in the games at Forteleza and Belo Horizonte (vs. England).

I wish I could also share the optimism about England. If we do get out of the group stages we may have to play Brazil or Spain in the quarter finals.

I suspect not everyone is so lucky.

Some of us are married.

The thought of jumping off the end of the world and then gravity switching 90 degrees is pretty cool.
Re:Poll: Developers how often are you contacted by recruiters? on Monday February 03, 2014 @12:08PM (#7171857)
Multiple emails and LinkedIn messages per day is the usual. I don't even have connections who are recruiters, but I have used agencies to look for jobs in the past. It's almost like they share a candidate database, because I'm not sure how half of them know I exist.

I'm a developer in North-West England, predominantly C#.

Re:What Programming Languages Do You Struggle To Hire For? on Wednesday January 29, 2014 @11:03AM (#7144633)
That is interesting. What would you think if someone applied who had several years C# experience, but had only used python in their spare time on one or two small projects? Assume they have solid understanding of general software development, but they'd need to get used to writing python in your work environment?
Re:What Programming Languages Do You Struggle To Hire For? on Wednesday January 29, 2014 @10:31AM (#7144388)
Out of interest, what concepts are you talking about?
I think that if you bring a dog into work then it should be allowed to display it's opinion of Agile methodologies.
Re:Unfinished, unfair and brutally difficult on Friday January 03, 2014 @08:24AM (#7005273)
Something I noticed recently while briefly playing GTA V online was that people seem to be able to think of infinite ways to unfairly troll other players. I know the game itself is geared up for player versus player battles, but I'm talking about ways that the game isn't even designed.

Some examples I saw in a short space of time: - Trapping people in shops by parking vehicles next to the door so they have to leave the game, re-enter or quit. - Going around purposely damaging vehicles (tyres) so that people doing jobs have no getaway. - Standing outside common spawn areas and just killing folk as soon as they arrive.

Perhaps using GTA as an example isn't great but it did make me wonder for a moment - does anyone actually just want to play the game in the way it was intended?

I wonder if that could be part of the assessment, to tell if the candidate is likely to verify uncertainties or make assumptions.
Re:We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals on Wednesday November 06, 2013 @08:53AM (#6682631)
This is true and it is completely ridiculous.

I often get recruiters who try to sell me a job based purely on technologies and not what the company actually does. I'll ask them who the company is and they usually wont say, either due to the fact that I haven't sent my CV/resume or they think I am another recruiter that is trying to steal the details.

I've had similar experiences.

I went for a job a few months ago where I had to write a program on paper to produce report data from raw data collections, it was reasonably complicated. This is the type of thing I breeze through when I'm sat alone at my desk, but for whatever reason I just went into panic mode and couldn't think straight at all. I apologised and told them just that. It was frustrating to say the least.

The interview went ahead and we ended up talking about various architectures, design patterns, programming languages, functional programming and even HN, but I'm sure I never got the gig because of the technical test.

For the interview at my current gig they walked out of the room for 10 minutes while I had to write sorting algorithms and I was able to do it without a problem. So, for me at least, the element of being watched while I wrote the code seemed to be part of the problem.

Re:f.lux has been updated to a new version on Wednesday October 16, 2013 @11:07AM (#6560050)
I think it has made a difference for me. Since I started using it I've noticed that I don't have major trouble getting to sleep if I've just finished working on my laptop, which can be a problem for me.

Also, I have been turning the brightness right down on most of my non-flux devices (including my TV) because the light is harsh.

Re:How much can an extra hour's sleep change you? on Wednesday October 09, 2013 @02:39PM (#6522999)
I find this hard to believe. I have contact dermatitis and it noticeably gets worse when I am not sleeping well.
