I drove through Iraq for a month in 2022. From Baghdad north to Erbil, then south to Fallujah and Najaf.

Men and women rarely interact, like many Muslim majority countries. It is odd for most people to talk to the other gender who is not their direct family. Found the stereotypes we have in the west of women were the same there but more exaggerated. A tough existence.

I’ve seen leaks impact my company directly 4 or 5 times in 4 years, so I would think often enough since we own a /9~ and don’t change our routes too often.

At my company (Fortune 100), we've been selling a lot of our public v4 space to implement... RFC1918 space. We've re-IP'd over 50,000 systems so far to private space. We just implemented NAT for the first time ever. I was surprised to see how far behind some companies are.

Note they have a new fee schedule, this would cost $500 in the fee to sell, and IPs are going for $48-$52 right now:

Usually if a response is greater than 512 bytes the DNS server will renegotiate on TCP 53. Note some DNS servers might not do this, but every normal implementation does that I’m aware of.

They're talking about the western slope, which would mean roughly Grand Junction to Durango in this context.

Ask HN: How to Test Route Changes

Hello HN,I’m a network engineer at a large US company, and we’ve been having difficulty with ensuring our route advertisements are correct when making summarization and firewall changes. This has caused outages recently, especially as we use both Azure and AWS as well as on prem data centers so our route tables have become very large and complex (roughly 4000 routes and growing). Is there a...

General question: where does this research lead to? As in what might be the next step for this research team, and/or their field in general? I always like to understand what discoveries like this could open up in the future.

5G really only works well in dense/populated areas. In central Colorado I'm lucky to get 4G LTE in town, and usually expect 3G. Most areas in the US west (Utah, Wyoming, etc) don't have any service. It's very different if you're way out.

If you have 4G or better, I'm not sure. Here's a map of 5G from ATT in Colorado: https://www.cellmapper.net/map?MCC=310&MNC=410&type=NR&latit...

For the TLDR people:

“ In each previous section, what was at issue was a discrepancy between two figures, both obtained from data provided by Columbia. Regarding class sizes, the information provided to U.S. News conflicts with the information in the Directory of Classes. Regarding terminal degrees, the information provided to U.S. News conflicts with the information in the Columbia College Bulletin. Regarding full-time faculty, the information provided to U.S. News conflicts with the information provided to the Department of Education. And so on.”

The big conclusions are that Columbia seems to be providing inaccurate data, and that one of the outcomes of chasing rankings are that transfer students end up as second class students, at least at Columbia.

I think it’s a data driven case of how elite universities can perpetuate a system of reduced social mobility. For Columbia, the objectively more poor transfer students support the more wealthy non-transfer students, and the graduation rate shows that disparity.

Re:Bulgaria Freelance Taxes: Detailed Breakdown on Sunday January 09, 2022 @08:47AM (#29863135)
Plenty of first/second world country have more friendly tax laws. Many don’t tax foreign income, and if you live outside the US for 300 days per year, you get a $100k tax write off up front.

There are many legal ways to live in nice places and pay low tax.

Re:Money and Investing (1996) on Tuesday March 30, 2021 @12:50PM (#26637003)
That's not true from any perspective. At the end of a buyback the company owns more of its own shares, and investors own less. The company bought something for its money.

Dividends are payments to those who own shares, and the company does not own more of anything after a Dividend pay out.

Also feel free to ask anything about the project!
Re:Show HN: Automatic Covid Travel Tracking on Thursday February 18, 2021 @12:47PM (#26183021)
Hey HN! I made this site because most sites I found about where I could travel were focused on Americans traveling to western nations and would not update their information. This site was built using almost entirely no-code tools except for the data collection and updates which is currently somewhat automated, and soon fully automated. Once the data for people traveling from the US is automated to update properly, I’ll be doing the same with each country. Any suggestions are appreciated, this has been a fun project so far!

Building from source is probably easier for a non-tech user than filing taxes that are anything more than a basic W-2.

Re:Tips for a Better Life on Saturday December 26, 2020 @10:33PM (#25548580)
I think the US part of this is that it's not some theoretical "don't talk to people who have interests that don't align with you", it's that actually talking to the cops in the US can never help you, only hurt you. If you incriminate yourself or lie to them that can and will be used against you, but if you make a good argument or have a good reason that will not be used in your defense.

By design, "anything you say can and will be used against you" which is a one way street.

Ask HN: How to build static website that displays database data

I've been trying to figure out how to build a "static" website that displays data pulled from a database. I know SQL fairly well, but have no experience in web dev. I would think website builders would have basic functionality for this, but maybe it's a much harder problem than I'm thinking.I would also think this could be done on the server side, so the user should never interact directly with...

Not spontaneous, but if I'm in a meeting with someone I've never met before I'll schedule a 1:1 just to say hi. It's worked well in expanding my network despite working remotely.

This strategy doesn't work for a lot of people because I think most people think of it as awkward when if you word it friendly enough people understand this would be more normal in the office.

Thank you so much! Stay safe out there <3
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by followable?
Thank you so much!
