Apple will never consider doing that. Their actions speak to the exact opposite: total control of their devices and ecosystem, non-cooperation with other companies on standards, stringent app store controls. They gain nothing, in their eyes, to allow that development model.
Re:It takes $420k per year to run Lichess on Sunday January 16, 2022 @10:54AM (#29956960)
I worked for a bit for chess.com. Your assumption about "bottom-of-the-barrel" Indian devs is heartless and also incorrect. Be better please.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2020) on Tuesday September 01, 2020 @05:16PM (#24347171)
Will full remote with occasional travel (ever) be considered?
Gustin makes good looking stuff, but the buying process is different in you fund a piece and when it gets funded they make it. Their fit is for stick figures though :\
Re:ACME v2 and Wildcard Certificate Support is Live on Wednesday March 14, 2018 @10:39AM (#16585034)
Did you do a deploy before a plan? ;)

We've all been there!

Quick hack, maybe. But someone getting the time to do so is another issue. And these are old systems, you want them to do the work so you can read a tsunami warning that happens how often?
http://deskthority.net/ and http://geekhack.org/ are both great resources for everything keyboard, ergonomic, and beyond.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2013) on Wednesday May 01, 2013 @04:41PM (#5640648)
It is refreshing to see posts like this that are willing to teach. Wish I could do it. Have a good one, and good luck filing the position.
Re:Ask HN: Am I being too hard on the developers I interview? on Wednesday January 23, 2013 @01:43PM (#5104516)
It took me about 20 minutes to solve using a recursive solution error-free, and I have not been doing any math intense work lately and am well out of practice.

Anyone with decent exposure to math has at least SEEN pascals triangle, so I think it is a fair question. Try as you might to make them comfortable, they are probably still nervous regardless.

Re:Ask HN: How to market a 2D MMORPG? on Wednesday January 16, 2013 @12:18PM (#5067773)
I'm not sure what it takes, but have you thought about trying to get on the Steam store?
Re:Ask HN: Interested In A Denver HN Meetup? on Wednesday January 16, 2013 @12:01PM (#5067667)
I live/work in Boulder and am definitely interested.
Re:Ask HN: Tea or Coffee? on Friday January 11, 2013 @12:18PM (#5043673)
Tea... the taste/smell of coffee is so disgusting to me that it makes me nautious for as long as I can remember. Even as an ingredient in food, there is something about coffee that is completely repulsive.
Do you know of any alternatives being worked on? No snark intended, I am genuinely curious about the current state of affairs.
Re:Welcome to Quartz on Thursday December 20, 2012 @10:58AM (#4948307)
I had the same result with chrome. Ghostery was the cause, but like another comment pointed out just delete the overlay.
Simple DHT implementation, binary trees refresher, and finish my website generator.
I currently do full stack web development but not for a startup. Hate it, especially being knee deep in JS every day is something I won't miss when I move on from this position. My feelings towards JS are that it is being over-used and ruining my internet experience.

tl;dr Looking into systems administration and do my programming at home on my own time and my own projects.

Re:Law school applications are collapsing on Thursday December 13, 2012 @05:31PM (#4918520)
It is about lawyers, guns and money. I would flag it malicious as well!
Re:Any page loaded in IE can track your mouse movements anywhere on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @10:52AM (#4910632)
Maybe we should think about moving away from interactive pages. What does all that interaction get us, really?

Ask HN: Anyone else tired of sidebars?

Lately, many of the sites I have been going to from here have what I would consider obnoxious sidebars. They are filled with ads, links to more content, social button groups or (the very worst) the smug ironic-looking face of a blogger and a total of 3 navigational links. Copious amounts of my monitor pixels are dedicated to these, while the actual content I am there for gets very little...

I am a little dissapointed you are catching some flak. It is your life, do what you think is right.

Kudos to you for your decision. A book was written about marriage, long term monogamy, and (at least for me) showed that maybe sex shouldn't be this huge deal we currently make it out to be. It's called Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha.

Re:Ask HN: Do you limit your code to a certain line width? on Thursday November 29, 2012 @11:14AM (#4848481)
80 as well. Keeps stuff tidy across many monitors, and as a lucky bonus at work a NERDTree window and two 80 column windows fit perfectly on one monitor.

Edit: guess I should add I primarily work in Python, C, and Javascript.

Re:Ask HN: What did you think of the hacking in Skyfall? on Wednesday November 28, 2012 @03:25PM (#4844511)
Atrocious like (99.99% of) the rest.

I've stopped letting myself get frustrated over this a while ago. The intention of basically all movies are to entertain. And for those that do not know otherwise, shiny beeping flying objects floating around on a screen conveying 'logic' and 'paths' will always be more comprehensible compared to a command prompt.

Re:Ask HN: How do you read Hacker news? on Wednesday November 14, 2012 @02:53PM (#4785162)
Read the article, then back button (caches are friends). If it was a worthwhile article, I click the link to the comments. Never more than one tab related to HN, keeps tabs organized.

Oh, and Hi :) I lurk a lot too.

Re:Ask HN: How do you protect your privacy online? on Monday October 29, 2012 @03:29PM (#4714012)
To add one suggestion, if you want even more control than Adblock Plus, you can look at Request Policy (http://requestpolicy.com)

Instead of a blacklist approach like abp, you control which cross-site requests are allowed. Most of the time all a site needs is one xsite request to the domain hosting its static resources

Re:The Problem With APIs and a Possible Solution on Tuesday October 23, 2012 @11:16AM (#4688478)
> Also, is there a standard way to make discoverable the http methods that can be applied to a resource?

HTTP OPTIONS method is exactly that. Mind your response headers, they can convey plenty of information about your resources: allowable methods, request and response types mime-types (you can rank type preference as well).

> In practice, does anyone write web service clients that use, and are driven by, link discovery? ...

Documentation is always useful. But HTTP can almost be self documenting for well thought out and linked resources. For link discovery, maybe a standard like HAL (http://stateless.co/hal_specification.html) or similar would be of interest. There is another proposed way as well, I can't think of it at the moment but will add an edit if/when it comes to me.

EDIT: I had poor wording, there are several 'json hypermedia specifications'. Another would be (Collection+JSON http://www.amundsen.com/media-types/collection/). Hope that helps.

Re:Ubuntu 12.10 Now Available on Thursday October 18, 2012 @03:31PM (#4670604)
Why not use a virtual machine? Then you can be worry free about your current setup.
Re:Ask HN: How do you decide when to move jobs? on Friday October 12, 2012 @04:23PM (#4646669)
This might sound weird, but test yourself in the morning. Do you wake up ready to get to work? Or does the thought of it keep you in bed for another hour after the initial alarm goes off? Seriously, that is how I know I like what I am doing. Do keep in mind that there are always the bad days, so do several self 'tests'.

For me, personally, the lack of learning or something challenging would be the deal breaker.

PS - And since you are near/in SF, take another posters advice and do some hiking in desolation wilderness near Tahoe's south shore. Mt. Tallac makes a great day trip and it's easy to get to with a fantastic view. (Contrary to the name, it is beautiful.)

I've seen this mentioned several times. Is there a resource you recommend on the 'new ways'? Asking out of curiosity, about to start a side project with C, and I do have the text mentioned.
Re:Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2012) on Monday October 01, 2012 @03:04PM (#4598761)
SEEKING WORK -- Boulder, CO or remote

Seeking a shift to (probably entry level) linux system administration.

Looking to transition away from web development. 3+ years wearing several hats, and would like to really focus on the administration side of systems and networks. Currently I do mostly web development related activities involving javascript apps, restful web services, automated builds and deployments, with some cross-over into the admin domain.

Some bullet points - Programming languages: Python, Java, Javascript, C Web Development: Full stack from Backbone.js + Bootstrap driven webapps to web services and server configuration/management/application deployments. Largely Python focused, but also have experience with PHP and Java. Installation and configuration of httpd, nginx, tomcat, varnish, uwsgi, svn, Jenkins/Hudson, postgres/postgis and more. Familiar with e.g.: iptables, openvpn, postfix, and Bash scripting.

Aside from the usual bullet points I have set up PKI's, written a static website generator (for personal use), and have some experience with GIS technologies from a previous position.
