Re:Why are good developers so wary of agentic development? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:09PM (#50292451)
I am wondering if a combination of broader/deeper observability attach and synthetic user monitoring can help offset some of this. This may just displace and not mitigate the trust issue, but it seems like a valid product direction for the harness layer given falling token costs.

Besides moral qualms I think it could be difficult establishing a representative baseline with the elderly and terminally ill
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:30PM (#50249622)
Or are they AWS after launching S3 and EC2? Model companies have a credible path to building platform value. It's too early to assume they can't execute on that.
Re:DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:47AM (#50165542)
If open source inference engines proliferate (in terms of adoption, across models, across inference hardware) I imagine you'd get pricing pressure on that inference rev towards base card cost, so my interpretation is this is actually a bad development for compute providers.
Also robbing the future, consistent with a gerontocracy
Commoditize complements
Re:The designer lamps in my house on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:38PM (#49970361)
This is great. Lighting I think is the best thing to spend money on as it isn't exposed to wear and tear like furniture.

In addition to these also a huge fan of Anglepoise desk lamps, Lotte lamps and Mantis sconces.

Also Nietzsche: "“What do the people actually take knowledge to be? What do they want when they want ‘knowledge’? Nothing more than this: something unfamiliar is to be traced back to something familiar.”"
Re:Early Humans Likely Ate Carbs and Sugary Foods on Friday August 21, 2026 @11:45PM (#49396389)
If you’re constantly moving sugar is a necessity for maintaining glycogen. There’s nothing inherently wrong with any food type, it’s all about context.

Re:What went wrong with data lakes? A 15-year reality check on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @05:22PM (#49189198)
I'd say Bob Muglia is pretty credible
Over the period of the industrial revolution humanity gained the ability to manipulate the material world in profound ways (convert potential energy into mechanical work, etc.). My view is information technology allows humans to continue to do that, but more efficiently. I think you’d need a breakthrough in manipulating subatomic particles and quantum mechanics to have the same level of relative impact as the industrial revolution.
> Part of the problem was regulators’ decision in late May to approve 16 single-stock leveraged ETFs tracking Samsung and SK Hynix, which have been blamed for amplifying moves in indices and individual stocks.

Baffling that this was approved, though less so if you don't assume the regulator has the general market participant's interests in mind

Re:Open Weights and American AI Leadership [pdf] on Friday July 24, 2026 @03:07PM (#49040315)
Commoditization of the model layer is to Azure's benefit. It would help to avoid the model layer becoming a platform that commoditizes cloud into a pure bare metal business. It also redistributes 'consumer' surplus back to the end user via a lower effective price, which would conceivably increase demand for IaaS and/or PaaS which are complements.
Re:Be skeptical of OpenAI's rogue hacker agent story on Friday July 24, 2026 @02:57PM (#49040182)
Well this at least raises the very interesting question of liability for an illegal action, irrespective of whether the action was undertaken by something considered sentient or a person.
Re:SpaceX, Other Mega IPOs Denied Fast Index Entry by S&P on Thursday June 04, 2026 @11:28PM (#48407582)
The market is more unpredictable than it’s been in a long, long time so I hesitate to make a firm prediction but to me the odds that SpaceX will be a successful IPO over a 3-6 month window are significantly lower now. S&P inclusion basically requires funds to hold a position by default, and per their own estimates $20tn of assets are indexed/benchmarked to the S&P.
