Re:Debunking the Myth of Dollar Cost Averaging on Saturday June 10, 2023 @01:06PM (#36272369)
If you have a long time horizon and invest in a broad-based index fund, why do you even care about short term volatility? If you need to withdraw money within the next few years, then yes volatility matters. But in that case, you might be better off not investing in stocks and go with less risky stuff.
Re:Debunking the Myth of Dollar Cost Averaging on Saturday June 10, 2023 @12:54PM (#36272233)
If stock market always goes up in the long run, I bet you can mathematically prove that just investing all your money as soon as you have it beats any dollar cost averaging where you just invest a small amount in frequent intervals (and keep some of your money in cash).
Not sure why I got down-voted, but what I said just happened - https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy1337. The depositors will be made whole.
Money is just a number on the ledger for the government. They can just give back everyone's deposits or maybe wait for a few months until it becomes a major crisis and then bail out everyone. The investors and shareholders of SVB are going to lose everything, but the depositors will be fine.
Re:Update on Supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max on Sunday November 06, 2022 @09:12PM (#33500221)
It made sense to lock everything down when we did not have an effective vaccine. Now we do. Why is Xi forcing lock downs instead of vaccinating people? Covid is endemic now just like flu or cold. It's never going away. His strategy just doesn't make sense anymore.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with the end of globalization? on Saturday October 22, 2022 @11:19PM (#33304276)
I wish it was just a cold war. It has turned into a real fucking disaster. Despot Putin does not seem to be backing off, and perhaps will destroy all of Ukraine's vital infrastructure no matter the cost. If Ukrainians still stand still, he will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons.
Re:IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power on Saturday September 03, 2022 @06:52PM (#32707089)
Another bigot. So hard to please everyone.
Re:IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power on Saturday September 03, 2022 @11:30AM (#32702796)
Good god! It must be really hard to make anything these days. If you don't put enough people of color, people will shout of bigotry. If you include a few, some will accuse of wokeness and review bomb it to hell. I'm just glad that the show got made!
Re:Vitamin D and Depression (2020) on Sunday May 08, 2022 @02:40PM (#31306826)
Daily morning and afternoon exposure to bright light might actually be more important to reducing depression than direct vitamin D supplementation. Low vitamin D might just be an indicator that you are not getting enough sunlight. Sunlight also affects melatonin and serotonin levels, and synchronizes your Circadian rhythm. Not sure why that article doesn't talk about Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and how bright light therapy is considered an effective treatment for it.
Re:U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient on Monday January 10, 2022 @06:51PM (#29884888)
These pigs are genetically modified to remove a particular protein called Alphagal from all their cells - Reminds of of this interesting podcast in Raidiolab. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/articles/retur...
So any study you don't like is propaganda or fake news? Did you personally get attacked because you are one of the vaccine hesitants?
I don't see where your law contradicts with what the article is saying. After Alibaba cloud researcher found the vulnerability, they first reported it to Apache foundation right away. Waited until the issue was resolved by Apache before disclosing it to the government and the wider developer community. So, Chinese government wants the information "within 2 days" before the issue is fixed.
By forcing Chinese developers to report zero-days to the government first before it is actually fixed, China is trying to get an upper hand in weaponizing zero day vulnerabilities.
I don't know what fantasy well-functioning economy you are taking about. You had to manually call a taxi company, and wait for an hour for a taxi that might now even show up.
I don't know which world people like Dorsey live in. There is a massive chip shortage (all over the world) and energy shortage (in China and Europe). We don't have enough energy to power homes, and there just aren't enough chips for automobiles. This got to be an absolutely worst time to start manufacturing bitcoin machines, opensource or otherwise.
Lets not forget about OPEC+. They reduced the supply significantly due to the pandemic and haven't increased the oil supply back to the normal levels. Higher oil prices is causing inflation, not the other way around.
Re:Self directed IRAs under attack in proposed tax bill on Thursday October 07, 2021 @12:00PM (#28788074)
The traditional IRA and 401k were introduced in 1974, the Roth IRA in 1997. They were never intended for rich or poor people to speculate in risky one-off investments. How does this rule set the US back 250 years?
Re:On YouTube’s recommendation system on Friday September 17, 2021 @01:30PM (#28568281)
For me, it seems like youtube's recommendation system mostly gets stuck in the local optimum. Once you watch a video from a particular channel, it'll keep on recommending the videos from the same channel for months. Soon, the recommendation just consists of stuff from the channels that have you already viewed. You rarely see new types of recommendations.
Yeah, nationalize all the innovative companies and let the bureaucrats run them. You then end up with a system designed in the 1970s and rarely updated - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACH_Network. In the US, it takes 4-10 days to send an ACH.
Capitalism and free enterprise succeed due to competition. Your local electric company and the local cable company probably are state sanctioned monopolies.
