Re:The Todo.txt Command Line Interface (CLI) on Thursday August 27, 2009 @04:33AM (#788876)
This is pretty cool. I've been using a textfile for todo lists for a while, but the video tutorial really blew me away.

EDIT: This is really the type of stuff I'd love to see more on news.ycombinator.com -- tools to make me more efficient.

Ask HN: 3D in Flash 10

I want to know the limits of 3D flat-shaded capabilities of flash 10.In particular, I've found demos like: http://www.everydayflash.com/blog/index.php/2008/05/05/vertex-animation-papervision3d/ and http://www.yswfblog.com/blog/2008/11/12/3d-with-flash-10-part-2/but I'm wondering if there is something more impressive around (like a 3D wireframe of a real object) ... or if flash 10's 3D...

I trust the HN community more, and want to know of tricks / optimizations others have used.

Ask HN: Buy Car

Having recently gotten my BS CS, I'm planning on getting a car. Nothing luxury, but also nothing that requires constant tweaking (it's a car, not .vimrc). So I just want something inexpensive & stable. Suggestions?

Re:Ask HN: Parser for Java on Monday July 27, 2009 @12:02AM (#725354)
Java source code.
Re:Ask HN: Parser for Java on Monday July 27, 2009 @12:02AM (#725353)
Ah; this is closest to what I want; though if I can use the Sun one Sun uses for javac, it'd be even better.

Ask HN: Parser for Java

I've done google searches, and generally get back Parser Generators in Java / how to write Parsers in Java. What I want instead, is just a single industrial parser that can parse Java source code (like anything that the jvm can run). (Doing some really simple static analysis stuff). Is there anything "official" that's easy to modify, like a parser from Sun or IBM or eclipse? Thanks!

Re:Ask HN: Exists Open Source FPGA Tool Chain? on Sunday July 26, 2009 @08:35PM (#725106)
What's preventing the reverse engineering effort? Legality issues? Difficulty? Time? (I've heard stories about samba, and it seems like if MS protocols can be reverse engineered, then things that have to obey the laws of physics couldn't be that much worse).
Re:Ask HN: Exists Open Source FPGA Tool Chain? on Sunday July 26, 2009 @07:49PM (#725055)
Great thanks, this is even better (a community rather than just a yes/no answer). :-)

Ask HN: Exists Open Source FPGA Tool Chain?

Is there any FPGA (slightly expensive is okay) that has an completely open source tool chain? I'm not a big GPL/BSD fanatic per say, but when things break / things need to be optimized / tweaked, I like having the source code around (rather than banging my head wondering what's happening in the black box). Thanks!

Re:Gcc Misinterprets Trivial Loop as Infinite on Saturday July 25, 2009 @03:47AM (#723095)
Given issues like this, and how talented the kernel guys are ... why haven't they written a C compiler? (Not meant to rant; serious question -- we wrote silly C compilers for class; seems like programmers with real talent should be able to write real, industry strength C compilers, especially if it only needs to support C, and not C++/Java/ObjC/...)
Re:Work vs Life on Sunday July 19, 2009 @09:32PM (#713717)
IMHO, what differs from those people and the rest of us is their willingness to suffer it out until they succeed.

Work vs Life

I recently met this really attractive girl, which causes the following problem. The people I admire most in life (in random order): Tesla, Lance Armstrong, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Jim Clark, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, ... all seem to be people who:() would rather die than fail () had tremendously successful careers (*) had numerous divorces (if they ever got married)Given that that is the...
