Re:I know why Mathematicians weep on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:00PM (#50110148)
It's profit chasing as well as practical - it kneecaps the educated workers increasingly asking questions about the morality of business and technology. It takes away the income that affords them the space to push back, threatens high ed, critical thinking. The salivating over AI makes perfect sense in that context.

Some have been scurrying to amass a nest egg and become self-sufficient. Of course, if demand destruction from the hollowing out of labor happens fast enough, who will consume and keep these stock prices up? With the tax base simultaneously crashing, gov't can't step in and prop things up. It could help during the transition while failing as a long-term strategy but what else can you do?
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:16PM (#50095439)
it seems like an eye of the beholder issue, for some writing is natural and others are dreadful at it but the former don't feel any particular burden in performing, it feels seamless to them. so maybe the disconnect is when framed as a skill, it sounds like something one must practice but I don't think that's the case: if you can decompose problems, think of 2nd order effects, debug, etc you are there. in other words, I would never think to use AI as you have described above (copy & paste).

I love my dog but absent my partner's desires, I don't think I would've taken it on. The cost, attention, potential behavioral issues, the prospect of losing them eventually are not for everyone.

This rings true for me - I wish I could go back and tell my younger self not to prevaricate over trivialities. Maybe it's rose colored glasses but those times feel very idyllic otherwise.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:41PM (#50094894)
I was advised to have surgery ($7k) due to some 4-5mm pockets iirc. The pain scared me off so I looked into laser (LANAP) instead. I was able to shrink them with molecular iodine rinse and good home care (inc. water flosser). No surgery needed thus far.

I heard that before when I just started dating. I would say don't worry about the outcome (especially pertaining to one person - you know close to nothing about them early on anyway), just try to connect with people. In my case, it would've helped calm my nerves, which were a hindrance. I've been with my partner for 8 years. A given outcome is never preordained and you don't need everyone to like you, just the one that you click with if you don't let rejection discourage you.

It helps to know how achy the body gets without it. In my case, the back pain I had from desk work is entirely gone now. If you focus on the form rather than reps and getting through it, paired with some good music, you can reach a focus state. There are off days of course, but I'm surprised that I enjoy it much more than I used to, where my motivation dropped off quickly due to being externally motivated (visible gains). Now it's kind of cool to just see your ability change over time, better balance, capability to do more advanced exercises, etc.

The things that motive me to stick around are holding the people ruining this world to account, documenting it and trying to thwart their efforts, a curiosity in seeing just how bad the climate crisis gets (morbid curiosity at the end of our world - how do we react, can it wake us from our stupor), and a desire to help others (whether volunteering or just life advice). So spite and a dash of absurdism (helps provide some levity and not take things so seriously). I had to step back from my career to focus on a mobility issue and at this point I don't know if the job path will continue to be there or even if I care. I'm focusing on small pleasures for now - cup of tea, exercise, peace and quiet.
Re:The Fish Farming Industry's Dirty Secrets on Sunday October 11, 2026 @03:42PM (#50047038)
The research project they linked in the article [1] talks about 700 sardines needed for 1 farmed salmon which is not a great i/o but supposedly there's a shift away from fishmeal towards soy, algae, insect protein, etc to where fishmeal is more like 15% of farmed fish diet. Note these are wild fish as input so the notion of farming distinct & preserving wild stocks isn't accurate. Per the comments, there were plenty of NYT readers who were not aware of the downsides so I'm not as critical about it as you. Besides yield there's other considerations like disease spread and genetic degradation to wild stocks, sealice, pollution spillover, and so on.

Re:San Francisco hits pause on data centers on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:46PM (#49997125)
I'm not familiar with all of the sites but from what I can see they are below that 100 MW threshold. I wasn't aware of that bifurcation - thanks.

There was a pending project in Dogpatch and an increase in capacity at an existing DC in the Bayview.
Re:LLMs may have immensely helped my RSI on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:44PM (#49986909)
That's the other tough bit is cutting out the extraneous computer/phone use when dealing with RSI - it adds up.
Re:LLMs may have immensely helped my RSI on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:36PM (#49986831)
For folks experiencing RSI, I recommend Talon voice and Cursorless extension. I experienced thumb pain that I kind of ignored for a while - look into prehab exercises before it becomes a concern since any aggravating motion could make it worse quickly.

I haven't read it yet but folks might benefit from this recent book, Body Electric: The Hidden Health Costs of the Digital Age and New Science to Reclaim Your Well-Being.

Moreover, its nature is societal, we don't need to wait for a technical one - if people were willing to adjust the way they live. I'm not sure we will be able to pull off the timing for an energy transition, depending on how far we overshoot. At a point not far past 1.5c, you enter hothouse earth and amplification.
