I learned who Tracy Morgan was from Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock. Only Tracy I know of, male or female, so it always felt masculine to me.
Re:An unusual sexual bond between a bull and a male donkey on Monday November 02, 2026 @03:46PM (#50343475)
I didn't expect to read an article about a bull queer for donkey bussy today on HN but I definitely found it interesting

The fact that the bull tried to mount a separate donkey makes me think he's the one whose behavior / genetics / brain etc is more interesting, since being a willing recipient feels like it could just be a pecking order thing, like how sheep listen to dogs even though the dogs are a different species

Ash is a pokemon trainer. (I watched Alien and still had to search up your comment)
Have you never talked / mouthed without making sounds? Never even as a kid when something made you mad and you paced around the room think-saying shower thoughts to get back at that person? Even as an adult I probably mouth a sentence or two e.g. "What the fuck is this" when looking at AI output 3-5 times a week

It does feel a little weird to do it voluntarily when not emotional, but that'll be solved as soon as Claude fucks something up :)

You can download the .csv from the about page and filter / explore the data however you want using an agent or even just hand written Python.

This is actually BETTER than HackerTube, which doesn't expose something like this on the front-end AFAICT. Maybe the reason you didn't look for a .csv on HackerBooks is because you checked HackerTube first and developed a little bit of learned helplessness while I checked HackerBooks and its comments first before checking HackerTube

Re:Novellas with Groff on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:28PM (#50328250)
A quick search immediately expands your knowledge (and unfortunately makes Stephen King much less interesting in this regard): Steinbeck went through 300 pencils to write East of Eden. Nabakov wrote all of his novels entirely on index cards. Even JK Rowling apparently wrote the vast majority of harry potter by hand on unlined paper.

And while not a novelist, Tarantino famously writes his screenplays all by hand as well.

Quick search shows George R R Martin wrote 3 to 4 million published words. ASOIAF is ~1.8 million. That's enough to focus on in my opinion.

Honestly, the amount of writing doesn't even seem that useful of a metric. Stephen king only wrote ~3x more than George, and about 6x more than someone like Nabakov (1.5 to 2 million words across two languages). The real takeaway IMO is to just write regardless of the technology you use

Re:Surviving "The Graduate" on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:17AM (#50322906)
Based on your other comments containing "I'm old enough", I'm assuming you are close to over three of my lifetimes years old. It's not about being disillusioned, or consuming media ironically or unironically. It's just about frame of reference. It's kind of like how it's functionally impossible to watch "Birth of a Nation" (which is apparently one of the best films of all time) and actually to SEE it as one of the best films for a multitude of technical and cultural reasons. Sure you can watch a film and deliberately try to have a certain perspective or "gaze" but isn't that just a form of ironic watching with extra steps?

The sibling comment was 100% accurate until "unironic and good" and then I have absolutely no idea what they are talking about with Joss Whedon and how AI somehow got shoehorned into the conversation. I watched The Graduate before ChatGPT came out.

You shouldn't take this n=1 anecdote as an authoritative view on my generation either, lots of people in my generation have more empathy and imagination than I do. Have a good night :)

You awoke negative-nostalgia to membrane keyboards where I remember I couldn't hold Shift + W + A at the same time in Minecraft as a kid so you're definitely right about bad keyboards, but I remember dead keys on WASD as well. I wasn't there, but the largest consensus seems to be that Quake popularized it, plain and simple. I'm sure other factors like what you mention helped it become the dominant layout as well

edit: figured out why that nostalgia happened. I was revisiting an old flash game I liked [0] and people were complaining to the dev about this exact key ghosting issue to him when it wasn't his fault but a fault of their keyboards, and in the Newgrounds description he links to a forum post [1] elaborating on the issue

correct me if i'm wrong, gamer credential questioner, but WASD was immortalized by the id Software "win Carmack's ferrari" tournament. Before then EDSF was also popular because it gave you more keys on the left side for hotkeys.

I do think you're objectively correct in your post, but I think what the grandparent meant was that "The author isn't actually interested in playing Contra on his website" which is why QoL stuff like that wasn't added and it "smells" like it should be there if you cared about playing on the thing you actually shared to HN. I know the first thing I would do would be to add wasd + mouse support to Contra, since the control scheme is the reason I don't try to play it. But at the same time I have never been interested in games that deliberately limit your controls as a form of difficulty (feels like a Japanese gamedev thing, from Resident Evil to Dark Souls)

I like it, I was and still am in the age range to relate to the young two main characters and their whimsy though.

In my opinion the thing that aged the worst was the soundtrack. The Simon & Garfunkel songs from this movie are so iconic and timeless at this point that it doesn't feel like a soundtrack to me but like someone made a TikTok edit and put those songs over the film, if that makes sense. Nobody in my generation knows the connection between those songs they heard as part of pop culture and The Graduate. This is an impossible psychological barrier to pass for me. Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" cannot dissolve into any movie's soundtrack for me when used unironically because I consider it a meme song (Mrs. Robinson as well to a lesser extent). It certainly would not have felt that way back then. I don't feel that way about modern songs with modern movies even though I recognize it is the exact same situation.

agreed, he should have used "entropy" instead of information
Re:Vetro – Less bloat, more control over your Samsung TV on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:13AM (#50207735)
Samsung TVs from 2022-2026 have been broken wide open over the last 2 months (multiple ways to get root, multiple ways to keep it persistent)[0]. Which is a good thing, because they're spying on you like everyone else.[1]
