I think that it may be the case by law that the donor cannot select the individual recipient of a donation if the organization wants to retain tax exemption.

Can someone explain the perception that Facebook's IPO was a disaster? Doesn't the fact that the stock has not risen mean that the offering had the correct price?
Re:Can Amazon's SimpleDB substitute for MySQL database? on Thursday October 30, 2008 @01:44PM (#348895)
Thanks for your advice and everybody else's too... I still feel like I may at least give SimpleDB a try by making a new domain for each table and distributing the large tables over multiple domains (my data is amenable to splitting up). I may make two copies of some domains that are split up in different ways so I don't have to query all of the domains associated with a table.

Are JOINs used that often? My thought was that I could export the data to a mysql database for analysis if I needed to do any very demanding crunching.

Can Amazon's SimpleDB substitute for MySQL database?

I'm developing a web app with only a couple people with small amounts of spare time and it would be great to "outsource" DB management to SimpleDB. I have heard SimpleDB can be slower than MySQL but it seems pretty fast so far w/o a large table. Does anyone have experience with it?

Isn't this just a reprise of the covered wagon?
Re:Using Amazon EC2 on Wednesday May 28, 2008 @01:38PM (#202357)
I've heard that there is too much latency to use EC2 as a host. Certainly xforwarding is not great. Check out the creators of "Friends for Sale": http://omnisio.com/sdforum/siqi-chen

Amazon EC2 Latency

I've heard that EC2 isn't really suitable for serving website pages because it has a lot of latency. I haven't tested this myself but I did notice that x forwarding from amazon machine images is pretty slow--I suppose these are the same thing. Any thoughts?

But science is so much fun! It's kind of like going to college for free--I get to take interesting classes. And work on startups on the side.

I emailed Google the same idea a few years ago and never heard back. It's pretty obvious.
How is the OLPC project "charity" when the governments buy the laptops from OLPC just as they would from Intel? The Economist is ridiculous, drawing false distinctions.
Re:How did you find your cofounder? on Wednesday November 07, 2007 @05:32PM (#77176)
Yeah, maybe I should give this a shot. The problem is that almost all of my college friends are also in grad school, so it would take some serious convincing....if only we didn't love science so much...

How did you find your cofounder?

I'm a grad student at Stanford looking for a cofounder but haven't had any luck yet. All my friends are extremely busy working in lab. Should we organize some kind of a meetup?

Re:Open source natural language processing? on Sunday October 28, 2007 @08:52PM (#73592)
Thanks for your response! I'm trying to: (1) parse questions into the "opening" such as "What is the", and "subject" like "capital of Burkina Faso"? (2) also looking for similarities between things like "going running" and "going for a jog" I'm not sure if both of these fall under natural processing... mostly I use python so your first suggestion sounds like a good starting place.
