It is funny that "the Web" as a platform has become like the mainframe for banks and some big companies.
It is an ubiquitous legacy, a critical infrastructure of our societies and a spaghetti that cost everybody a lot.
In the end it is controlled by the biggest corporations and various interests. Very hard to disrupt and replace.
Young Portuguese have been emigrating for the last 50 years. The country is full of second residences, bought by people who took advantage of cheap real estate until recently.
Blaming today's inflation and cost of living on a few digital nomads or crypto people doesn't make much sense.
What also chocked me when visiting Lisbon or Porto is the number of old abandoned buildings in what I would consider nice areas. I have always wondered what was the reason for that...
Bottom line today if you can't deliver your app on the web only, you will most likely end up at best with:
- An Electron (Desktop) app
- An React Native Mobile app (that needs to be delivered through both Google & Apple proprietary channels)
Whether you loved or hated Java the language, it is hard to deny we ended up in a terrible place:
- We lost all freedom on mobile
- We rely way too much on Blink & Webkit
- We traded Java for Javascript
- It's still relatively slow
- We haven't fixed the security problem on desktop
- Devs now have to manage a lot more technologies & moving parts

I recently rediscovered the joy & simplicity of make. I also started using it to sort & automate a lot of various daily tasks (adding todos, sending notifications, cleaning files, updates, backups, etc.)
Do you also leverage make for those types of use cases? or found better tools to do this?
Building a system & owning it is indeed an investment but often you have much more chance to stick to it long term.
Apps often come & go, transitioning from one to another can be very expensive.
Also if you want to be in control of the security & privacy DIY is the way to go.

I just thought that Git could make a lot of sense to manage personal finance. A little bit in the spirit of Ledger CLI https://www.ledger-cli.org/
I searched & it seems nobody have tried.
What do you thing & what would be the best approach?
I've used & loved Mozilla forever but at some point I am starting to wonder: when you fire 1/3 of your workforce & have obvious mismanagement problems, how can you still guarantee the security of such a complex piece of software?
This sounds like an April fool or an Onion article...
Maybe they could take this opportunity to do something useful & provide a dark mode...
Just from a performance point of view, opening LinkedIn webpage is a traumatic experience. I've rarely seen something so slow & heavy.
It's quite sad because LinkedIn gave birth to a lot of fantastic techs, such as Apache Kafka...
Nice !
For very basic bar charts the meter HTML element could be used but it is ackward to style unfortunately...
CommaFeed is great ! thanks for sharing this
I believe Mastodon should support RSS, at least some users would use it at first as a feed aggregator as then progressively switch to the social media aspects of the platform.

I feel both very enthusiastic & skeptical about blockchain.
In the last decade it has been designated by many as the way forward, some form of transactional, Internet of value & next step in business integration.
What scares me the most is no big alternative seems to have emerged in this area to compete with blockchain?
I hope I am missing something, any idea?
I'm not sure about GUN
But one obvious pro of IPFS is you leverage the huge network of IPFS nodes.
I was wondering: is pushing notifications using a PWA viable? (on Android & iOS)
One of the main difference is it is based on IPFS
I'm glad, Opera is offering native support for Wallets, ENS & IPFS. It is a proof that they can still lead the way.
There is also some progress made by Brave what will really help in term of market share.
Unfortunately native support on Firefox is not there yet...
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1354807
I have been amazed how mature & efficient IPFS has become, we should really welcome initiatives like Terminal that aim at making it more accessible.
It's almost 10 years old but Bootstrap is still my favorite. It is simple, familiar, stable & independent.
The downside is that there haven't been much innovation in term of UI on the web since then...
Consulting as a Service.
For sure a lot of people are gonna pass those AWS certifications now.
This is great but won't we be quickly limited by most providers Email Sending Limits?
With IM you're quickly over 100 messages per day.
Entreprise Architecture tools suck because Enterprise Architecture sucks.
Archimate is still a step in the good direction though and it seems the only standard alive.
Very nice and simple.
Haven't tested it yet, what about performance ?
