It's always seemed like this tech regulation was thinly disguised protectionism, similar to and possibly copied from the Great Chinese Firewall.

I think that's the risk-reward trade-off. At the most elite levels, it'll all be about survivor bias. So even if that technique only works some of the time, those that it works on will have a better chance of becoming elite.

I could see the argument for the first (non-profit) but not the second (accept everyone). Filtering down to a set of folks that they think they'd be able to most effectively help would make a lot of sense regardless of reason for doing.

Are they refunding the microtransactions/in-game store purchases? I read that they weren't but don't know if that's been updated.

There's probably some bias here where no parent is going to want to admit that they've treated their kids differently (likely unintentionally). Not to say that there isn't useful insight here anyway.

To be fair, even though it seems low, paper output/metrics are very field dependent.

To be fair, this is true of all departments and all people. Sales can't be successful if engineering and product don't build a good product with product market fit.

The idea of going somewhere where the biggest blockers to success are under your control makes a lot of sense if you have confidence in your ability to execute.

I would argue that even then you need to assess before making changes. If you're brought on for your expertise in process, you need to trust your own judgment on where the problems lie. Whoever is hiring you may have a sense that something is wrong, and may even have areas they think are broken, but if you're brought in as the expert, you should assess for yourself.

Lots of places, but I would guess finance and gaming have it at the highest percentage. They have the strictest performance requirements so algorithms and data structures end up custom built for the job more often.

Evil Genius is similar in spirit to Dungeon Keeper and a fantastic game as well.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, a 360 review doesn't require this kind of ranking. A 360 review just indicates that you're getting feedback/reviews from all directions relative to the org chart (manager, reports, peers, etc). What you do with that feedback and if you stack rank or something similar is what creates the zero-sum game.

If you look at PARC and Bell Labs, the innovations from those teams didn't necessarily become ubiquitous while within those companies. They started there, but left before they found their market and adoption success. I get the feeling we may see that with Google's green field projects as well. Google R&D may identify important areas of the future but be unable to monetize and grow them in ways that make sense in the current business.

Otto (and Uber's acquisition of it) might end up being an example of that in the self-driving car side. Google incubates that vision, unable or unwilling to release it as the founders of Otto wanted; they leave and eventually find commercial success elsewhere.

Although age bias is a thing in the Silicon Valley, this seems to be the main takeaway from the article at least on the engineering side. It's talking about engineers having to "learn new coding languages" or "retrained themselves to build mobile apps or do big data". Yes, clearly it's important to keep skills relevant and not just depend on the same job and the same company with the same skills being employable, at the same or higher pay, a decade later.

Yeah, I don't really understand the anger about this. Financial institutions already have significant regulations. It's not clear to me why the digital currency equivalent institutions shouldn't be treated similarly. If the only argument for digital currency is lack of regulation, it seems that people should be pushing for decreased regulation on financial institutions instead. An end-around regulation just because we're using digital currency as the go-between doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Big caveat, I haven't read this bill or about this bill enough to know if it goes significantly beyond the regulations for financial institutions. If so, clearly, that's different.

I think this is because financial institutions dealing with fiat currencies already have significant regulations that is not intended to apply to.

Agreed. Yelp still has useful content, you just have to read a few reviews (good and bad) to see what patterns stand out.

My analogous example to your hotel:bed bugs is Chinese restaurants:service. I've been to enough Chinese restaurants in my life to know what to expect. Unless the reviews show a particularly unusual pattern, I'm ignoring that complaint.

A company that sells a POS system (like Square) could do this. They'd have a record of verified purchases, and if you input your email, similar to with Amazon purchases, they can follow up with you to ask if you want to leave a review.

I actually think the games/virtual environments that avoid attempting to recreate reality will be more immersive initially. Being in a cartoon world would probably avoid distractions about something not looking "realistic" because as long as it seems consistent to the world you're in, I'm guessing it'd be very immersive. If I'm in a Toy Story world (or watching the movie), I'm not really bothered that the physics of how a character moves doesn't seem to match any reasonable muscle structure because I have no expectation that it should.

You don't need to be using Inbox for Google Now to have the appointment and tracking information parsed out. That's a setting in Google Now separate from the Inbox app. (I don't use Inbox but get those in Now)

That's fine as long as startups don't sell you that the equity that's part of your compensation has any value. In other words, they pay you market-rate that big companies would in salary+liquid equity and/or you decide that whatever discount they offer is worth the difference in work environment.

League has the same deal. Also, in League, you either have to sink more time or pay real money to play the champions that you like, so that further increases the cost of creating new accounts.
