Really interesting deep-dive reverse engineering of Din Sync (Sync 24)

» Have there been any mistakes in signature verification for this letter?

» We are aware of two mistakes in our efforts to verify the signatures in the form so far. One person who was not an employee of OpenAI or Google found a bug in our verification system and signed falsely under the name "You guys are letting China Win". This was noticed and fixed in under 10 minutes, and the verification system was improved to prevent mistakes like this from happening again. We also had two people submit twice in a way that our automatic de-duplication didn't catch. We do periodic checks for this. Because of anonymity considerations, all signatures are manually reviewed by one fallible human. We do our best to make sure we catch and correct any mistakes, but we are not perfect and will probably make mistakes. We will log those mistakes here as we find them.

This was really fun. Nice job.
Interested to know what's changed (if anything) in the two years since this was written.
Re:SoundCloud just banned VPN access on Monday December 15, 2025 @10:39PM (#46284494)
They specifically used "VPN" in the error message but I can't remember the exact text of the whole message.
Re:SoundCloud just banned VPN access on Monday December 15, 2025 @12:02AM (#46270668)
Last night I was blocked from HBOMAX (or whatever brand they go by these days) for being on a VPN. That was the first time I've ever encountered something like that on HBOMAX. I wonder if there is some coordinating event here.
Re:Create personal illustrated storybooks in the Gemini app on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @02:08PM (#44815548)
I made several attempts to try to get it to generate something more esoteric. Here is a story about a computer falling in love with a potato chip who becomes a sentient meth addict.

I don't get it but I'm not sure I'm supposed to.

    life + death = mortality
    life - death = lifestyle

    drug + time = occasion
    drug - time = narcotic

    art + artist + money = creativity
    art + artist - money = muse

    happiness + politics = contentment
    happiness + art = gladness
    happiness + money = joy
    happiness + love = joy
Re:The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything on Tuesday May 06, 2025 @05:09AM (#43903073)
Having kids is an excellent solution to this feeling. Besides occupying any time you used to have for unnecessary work, they have an uncanny ability to remind you just how little you actually control. However you get to the end of the OCD tunnel, the journey is often very worthwhile.
Re:Methodology is bullshit: principles for product velocity on Friday November 08, 2024 @02:52AM (#42085078)
I really enjoyed this. I try to run my team similarly.

Where I disagree slightly is vendors. If the need filled by the vendor is well-defined and low-complexity, sure, I'll go for it. Otherwise, I'm doing it in-house nine times out of ten.

Where this starts to get tricky is when some worthy competitors emerge, utilizing your foundation to scale quicker and more effectively. Then you might wish you had hired more people earlier. But overall, I think starting from this perspective is a lot safer than the opposite.

> It did not reduce student drug use. In face, it backfired and taught kids about interesting drugs that they probably wouldn't have found learned about otherwise.

I will never forget the day in fifth grade when a DARE representative came to our class with a briefcase full of samples of esoteric (to me at least) drugs. The way they were presented made them extremely appealing to me, similar to perusing the choices at a high-end candy store. I don't know for sure if this had any effect on me but I strongly suspect that it did.

My 6-year old was invited into the cockpit for the first time on January 1, 2024. I was wondering the same as you up until that moment.

Re:Ask HN: How to build empathy? on Saturday March 20, 2021 @03:18PM (#26525381)
Cognitive behavioral therapy can help.

The intellectual pursuit of empathy often results in individuals who know what empathy should look like and are good at faking it.

Real empathy requires you to recognize and process your emotions differently. This can be learned over time but usually not by directly attacking the problem.

This is just based on my own experiences.

But I can imagine this is frustrating for you and it seems like you’re already doing the hard work of recognizing there’s an issue. Good luck to you.

Re:Just Enough Piracy Can Be a Good Thing on Tuesday August 27, 2019 @11:23AM (#20810548)
I have a bigger problem with how IP law is written and enforced than the actual notion of IP law. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that IP should enjoy some protections, however, the current enforcements are in many cases downright abusive to consumers and smaller creators alike.
Re:Chatbots aren't as difficult to make as you think on Tuesday April 16, 2019 @09:45AM (#19673516)
Sample applications are rarely difficult to make. I built a bot as an experiment for my team (https://m.me/PigeonCorps) and we've run into a lot of issues that fall outside of intent classification and response. The most complex issues related to non-trivial chatbots (or atypical chatbots) in my experience have been:

  - session management
  - horizontal scaling
  - dealing with platform changes
  - dealing with platform downtime/bugs
  - hierarchical data presentation
  - matching intents within hierarchical/nested flows
I agree, however, that most chatbots we see are not incredibly complicated, however, I think the typical points that are emphasized in these types of articles (intent classification) are not the hard parts.

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful explanation.

Tried to add my first chord Bmaj7(no3) and it doesn't seem like the app recognizes it (can't play the chord or change the key of the song).
Re:Tech C.E.O.s Are in Love with Their Principal Doomsayer on Friday November 09, 2018 @05:12PM (#18418486)
Occam's Razor tells me it's because they are being painted as capable of subverting seemingly larger-than-life systems and institutions. I imagine it's an ego boost to a lot of these tech CEOs.

Yeah, like many of the UX gestures I perform on my iOS devices, I discovered this one by accident.
Re:iPhones are hard to use on Monday October 22, 2018 @06:35PM (#18279170)
Display Zoom is a different setting than Text Size.
Re:iPhones are hard to use on Monday October 22, 2018 @06:30PM (#18279139)
Another hidden UX: you can long press the keyboard and it'll turn into a touchpad that you can use to move the cursor (still not as easy as cursor keys but much better than the long press and drag method).
Re:New York inmate's golf drawings lead to exoneration in murder on Thursday September 20, 2018 @11:11AM (#18033010)
I agree that the second degree charge was proper but adding it in after the jury had heard the entire case seems unethical.

The podcast is called "Sword and Scale".

In what I'm sure is unrelated news /s, Altria Group stock has spiked to a 5-month high today [1]. Although there are legitimate reasons to consider banning E-Cigarettes, we should also be cognizant that Big Tobacco sees this as a benefit to their business. That alone makes me very suspicious of the potential benefits of this considered ban.

I'm not advocating Juul use as a strategy for quitting. I'm merely sharing my own experience, which was that Juul was the only thing that allowed me to quit (after 10 years of many attempts using most available options). Why did it work? I'm not sure. Perhaps it created just the right amount of elasticity in my addiction.
The Royal College of Physicians strongly disagrees with you. This is the same group that sounded the alarm on cigarettes in 1962 with their groundbreaking report "Smoking and health" [1]. Their 2016 report, "Nicotine without smoke: Tobacco harm reduction" [2] stands in staunch disagreement with your statement.

I was able to quit using Juul. That is to say, I no longer smoke cigarettes or Juul.
